Lennox Lewis has until March 1 to decide whether he will defend his heavyweight title in a rematch with Vitali Klitschko.

The World Boxing Council said if Lewis decides not to fight Klitschko, he will be stripped of his title. The top two contenders, Klitschko and Corrie Sanders, would then fight for the vacant crown.

WBC president Jose Sulaiman also gave Lewis and Klitschko the month of February to agree on terms for a fight. If terms cannot be agreed upon, the fight would go to a purse bid March 15.

Lewis has been secretive about his plans, hinting that he may retire instead of fighting Klitschko in a rematch of their bloody first fight last June in Los Angeles. Klitschko was leading on all three scorecards after six rounds, but lost when the fight was stopped on cuts.

Lewis trainer Emanuel Steward said earlier this month he expected Lewis to fight Klitschko and had told his staff members to be prepared to go to training camp.

The 38-year-old Lewis has fought only twice in the last 26 months.

Is Lewis scared? I've never thought of him as a fighter.

Does anyone think he should be considered "great"?

Not me. The heavyweight division is at an all-time low, and he fought Tyson long after his career was over too. Weak chin, questionable heart.

No favorite of mine.

I agree 100%. The guy just flat out refuses to fight others by taking time to "decide"...

If the cuts wouldn't have been so bad, Lennox would already be the ex-champ. He was getting his ass handed to him.

That being said, when he got knocked out by Oliver McCall, he dominated him in their rematch, McCall started acting weird and crying, pretty much quit. The Hasim Rachman dropped him for the belt, but lennox in the return match owned him. That will be the interesting angle to this fight for me, if Lennox has one more in him. I doubt it this time. But we'll see.

Well...I can't even begin to tell y'all how freakin' disappointed I am in the Heavyweight division...it isn't even interesting at this freakin' point...

I remember as a kid...when the heavyweight division was fucking revered...

all the guys that were brought through the ranks by Ali and Frazier...now...who are their idols?

fucking duds...

If Lewis never fought...would anyone care?

NO...

Well...and let's face it...he know's he can't beat the guy...so why the fuck fight him...

retire as champ...and move on...

that being said...Klitschko is still a joke if he wins the best for the simple fact that they guy would barely rank as a top 50 heavyweight of all time...

of course...Lewis is the same way...so what the fuck...
