MYTH 1:
Liberals aren't for Big Government. They are for streamlined, effective, and efficient government. It's funny how others think that providing health care and education while balancing the budget is "Big Government." It's funny how progressive taxation is deemed to be communism.
DAVEISKING:
Liberals aren't for Big Government? Well, "big" is a subjective term that is for sure, but how "streamlined" and "effective" or progressive (for that matter) is a party who is primarily behind laws which implement taxation on almost everything possible, try to "even up" society with reverse discriminatory policies (Affirmative Action, "Hate Crimes", etc) and creating and extending a Nanny-state welfare system which even opens to non-citizens (even though citizens pay the taxes on it)? These are just a few examples of how Liberals (and Republicans, too!) have socialized America. As far as "progressive" tax, that is a slap in the face of Liberty to punish the wealthy just for being wealthy! Even if we implemented a flat tax, the wealthy would still pay more! But, scratch that and put in a National Sales Tax, then more immigrants, visitors and others would foot the bill on most things that they use that the citizen carries the burden for now.
MYTH 2:
There is no "liberal illusion of security" but liberals support limited regulation of things to stabilize the economy. This is not socialism... America can still very well be a thriving capitalist market with some regulations to prevent the inevitible pile-up of wealth.
DAVEISKING:
The "illusion of security" deals with the Liberals' lean toward "knowing what is best for you". With a host of unneeded social programs, silly laws--such as forcing ADULTS to wear seatbelts and helmets, etc. and other victim-less "crimes", (liberals and conservatives are being 'public saftey' laws which cross the line of certain liberties) and obvious leanings toward "political correctness", and social ostracizing of those who disagree with them, liberals are certainly not the party of liberty (unless you count liberty as the freedom to be a Liberal and nothing else).
MYTH 3:
The liberal stances on Education, Health Care, Welfare (not corporate welfare), Crime and other social issues have nothing to do with the kind of Soviet style authoritarian communism/socialism people try to associate us with. And on FDR's policies: they were only there to bring America out of the Great Depression. In the 1940's, they were dismantled by the same FDR administration... and they quickly cut spending to balance the budget because no more spending was necessary.
DAVEISKING:
Excuse me, but the Supreme Court dismantled FDR's communist tactics of attempted court-packing and revealed many of his "betterment programs" as UNCONSTITUTIONAL. So, if you support (and this is a legit question) FDR's necessary (as some call it) infringment on the Constitution as being OK for the context of the times, do you support Bush's Patriot Act as well? I don't. I don't support either of them because they are coercive and anti-liberty!
MYTH 4:
The record is... Liberals are for an economic system that works.
DAVEISKING:
Since when does bourgeois Socialism work? The only form of Socialism that ever "worked" was National Socialism and we see the effect THAT had on the world! Soviet Communism kept people "equal" alright--equally poor.
MYTH 5:
Liberals will raise or lower taxes when necessary (as in the Great Depression), but won't give in to radical changes for corporate welfare or lowering taxes for the rich.
DAVEISKING:
To the point of UNCONSTITUTIONAL laws. (See FDR)
MYTH 6:
Liberals aren't for big brother.
DAVEISKING:
"Political correctness" (censorship), "hate crimes" (thought crimes), "public saftey laws" (we know what is best for you and your family. After all "it takes a village". Nah, they aren't for big brother, are they?
MYTH 7:
Liberals obviously want to protect the Constitution,
DAVEISKING:
By ignoring it excessively? And creating laws to thwart it?
MYTH 8:
...and have opposed all attempts to amend it unless it was absolutely necessary. (Like ending slavery)
DAVEISKING
Or adding social programs which the Supreme Court said was AGAINST it. And although slavery was a brutal practice, it was not advocated by the CONSTITUTION.
MYTH 9:
Liberals are one of the biggest proponents of civil liberties, and will work to make America SAFE AND FREE. For example, The American Civil Liberties Union is one of the biggest liberal organizations dedicated to protecting those freedoms.
DAVEISKING:
This is an opinion piece. Liberals want civil liberties for certain organizations, but censor other organization (and we are not just speaking of violent idiots either). Liberals have a history of violence on a large scale as well. The ACLU is seen from a different view as being biased and unbalanced in their "protection" of "civil liberties".
MYTH 10:
Liberals want common sense judges, however, that interprets the Constitution fairly without pre-meditated political ideology on issues like abortion and such. And we should never undermine the judicial branch of government just because it goes against what some people feel as "correct."
DAVEISKING:
You mean "politically correct"? The Constitution is a (this is MY opinion...) near-perfect document. I have read it, not just the Preamble. It is clear and precise and "arms" mean the same thing then as now. "Freedom of Religion"--the freedom to exercise, practice one's own religion, "Freedom of Assembly", so forth and so on.
MYTH 11:
Liberals are not to blame for anything.
DAVEISKING:
One lesson for liberals: Taking responsibility for your actions is a major step to maturity.
MYTH 12:
Liberalism emphasizes equality and security, individual freedom and responsibility, human values and compassion, and the need for tolerance and cooperation inside a responsible system of checks and balances.
DAVEISKING:
That may be,and is, in my opinion, a beautiful definition of it, but one must question if by "equality" you mean "equal opportunity" or something else? If by "security", you mean protection of homeland and our rights as citizens, or "we know what is best for you"--Big Brotherism? Do you mean "individual freedom" ECONOMICALLY as well as socially? Do you mean "tolerance" of disagreeing viewpoints on homosexuality as well as support of homosexuality (for example)?
MYTH 13:
Liberals are pro-democracy and pro-fairness to every American. We want to make America stronger at home... by addressing our economic and social problems without turning it into a stagflating beauracracy. Efficient. Strong. Effective. Fair. Factual. There is nothing more responsible than what liberalism says about how America should be to every citizen.
DAVEISKING:
"Pro-fairness" to EVERY American? What about Christians who believe homosexuality is a sin? What about Muslims who believe women should submit to their religious beliefs over US national policy? What about Mormons who believe that polygamy is ok? What about those who DISAGREE with the liberal's philosophy? No, liberals don't support "pro-fairness" to every American.
