Where do you start? In What era?

Kind of Blue (which I suspect you may be looker for a "starting point"): Miles Davis
Bitches Brew: Miles Davis

Live @ the Lighthouse: Kenny Burrell

A Go Go: John Scofield (Modern)

Herbie Hancock: ANY

Headhunters
Watermelon Man

could go on and on, but Marlowe is pissed at me, so I'll keep it brief.

Being a bassist myself....

It's a tie between Jaco Pastorius' debut on Epic or John Patitucci's "Communion"...

I love Herbie Hancock.

I recommend you all - try to find albums by one of the best bass players in the world - he's a great composer: Pekka Pohjola.
