Not neccessarily based on their commercial success. Who are your favorite musicians/singers who have gone solo?

I'll start by saying David Lee Roth.

Shocking, I know.

Lessee, well, there's DLR, Dio, Malmsteen, Vai, Uli Jon Roth(no relation to Dave Roth), Frank Zappa, Jaco Pastorius, Ozzy, Dave Mustaine(let's face it-Megadeth was always Dave's solo project), and some others that I just can't think of right now... GEORGE MICHAEL!!--just kiddin'!

LOL, George Michael.

Ozzy, Vai and Zappa were first that come to mind...

George Harrison's 1st solo album was great. I like SOME McCartney, I suppose, but I think that Robert Plant has done some KILLER albums... Check out "Fate of Nations". Kinda pop-rocky, but VERY good songs, and a real honest sound.

I like Peter Gabriel's solo stuff better than the stuff he did with Genesis.
Pretty bizarre how he named 3 (or 4?) of his solo albums "Peter Gabriel". What was the deal with that?

Hey guys no one mentioned John Lennon. he was succesfull outside the beatles and to me proved that he was the heart and soul of that band.

Ozzy proved that he could continue without sabbath

david lee roth- showed that he could put out great tunes without the help of the van halen brothers

Brian Wilson.

He officially left the Beach Boys in 1995. Since then, he's released 6 albums (7 altogether in his solo career). He's had a decent to modestly successful solo career, with the pinnacle being the 2004 release of SMiLE, which was forty years late.

Brian Wilson 1988 ****
Orange Crate Art 1995 ***
I Just Wasn't Made For These Times 1995 ***
Imagination 1998 ***
Live At The Roxy 2000 ****
Pet Sounds Live 2002 ***
Gettin' In Over My Head 2004 ***
SMiLE 2004 *****

Isnt' Orange Crate Art more of a Van Dyke Parks album, with assistance from Brian?

Yes it is, Diver. I just threw it in there because his name is attached to it, especially with it slapped on the album cover.

Van Dyke did indeed write all of that album, with lead vocals by Brian throughout.
