View Full Version : David Lee Roth Leno Performance And Interview 1995

Sarge

These two clips feature Diamond Dave singing California Girls with the Mambo Slammers from 1995 and a short interview by Jay Leno. This performance was to hype his upcoming Vegas shows. Dave caught some flack for this performance and interview because he was "over the top" in some of his comments. The performance was pure Dave and can kind of give you an idea of what his Vegas show was like.

The performance is cool, and had the spirit of Dave’s Vegas show (I saw one of them live, at Bally’s in ’95). I love how Leno followed the women off the stage at the end. Very cool.

But the interview was a fucking disgrace. I recall Entertainment Weekly saying that DLR’s appearance was the worst celebrity talk show appearance of the year. Ouch! His jokes weren’t even funny that night. A total disaster. Those watching that night who didn’t know better could have only thought Dave was washed up. It HURT to watch this, and I defend almost everything the man does.

What made it worse what that Dave had to go on after Robin Williams. Like him or not, he’s a tough act to follow in the energy/laughs department.

I must be missing something, 'cos I didn't think the interview was that bad. Okay, the last joke pretty much fell flat (Did it actually make any sense? It seemed like a punch-line with no setup.), but all the others got pretty good laughs. (And I enjoyed the VH slagging, even if the audience didn't.)

I'm not just knee-jerk defending Dave, btw. Maybe it's just because of some of the comments, and I went in expecting the worst, something really embarassing and fucked up, but I thought it was okay.

Dood, when Leno looks over at Williams with a "what the fuck?" expression and then calmly places his hand on Dave's shoulder and says, "I think someone needs to change YOUR bong water..." homey ain't makin' no sense.

I didn't understand the last story at all, the one about "never miss the 17th"-thing or something...otherwise I feel he was very funny...

Jay Leno always has a fake laugh anyway, he's not that funny as he wants to be...

Nothing Wrong With Daves interview. In case you ain't noticed More than half he sez Needs a double take or Doesn't Make complete sense. That's Where the Rothisms come from. He often attacks conversation from left field. He puts things in a unique way to show you a glimpse of his world.

God! that was just the worst. Compare it to 10 years earlier when he was on Letterman and without doubt the biggest and best Rock Star in the world.

I'm actually glad the show flopped and DLR snapped out of it.

VERY difficult to watch my Hero looking so lost after so many interviews where the man is just the coolest fucker ever. Didn't EVH say he cried when he saw how far DLR had sunk?

I agree. That was the worst interview with Dave Ive ever seen. He had a few one liners, which was cool. But for the most part when the host, and the entire audience doesn't laugh when they're suppose to, and laugh when they are not...Theres a problem. I hated Robin Williams there too. He kept interrupting Dave when Dave was telling his "you know, I had a car like that once" story.. Im sure Dave watches it and cries too BTW...And besides that, Has Eddie ever seen or heard himself latley? Jesus H Christ, that man is a pale image of what he was in 1984. Look back at the '95 Van Hagar promotion interviews. The guy was full of himself and shit. Then look at Eddie's interviews with bro Al after the '96 fiasco. Drunk, stoned and full of lies.

No maybe cries is a bit strong. Im sure Dave doesn't cry over shit like that. But, I am sure he would consider that particular interview as being a real shit stinker. His clothes were aweful, his hair was shockingly short, his rambling was everlasting, and when he did make a point, or crack a joke, Robin "steal the spotlight" Williams was right there to cast the Black Cloud over Dave and swing the sun his way. Dave hasn't been on Leno since has he? What was the last American/Canadian Talk Show Dave was on and when? (Carson Daly 2002?)

I was one of the three guys in detroit '99 front row center with the eat 'em and smile make up on, The long hair, and my two partners Hated Dave and were dissappointed after the backstage passes went to the chicks. I was the only one who got it and appreciated Dave based on his accomplishments and I went on to see him with Hagar in 2002. I'm still a fan. But It makes me sick to hear all this Limp Wristed Pissin' and Moanin' from you guys over the interview. You sound like my buddies after the concert. I'm almost havin a flashback. Are We taking this to StarWars-Like Fandom??? Dave ain't no prequill as He will still Drop-kick the DeathStar. Don't Be sguare. Relax Star Wars geek. This thread is based on the Jay Leno interview he did in 1995 promoting his Vegas show. We are discussing why it was the drizzling shits that night for Dave. Not if. But why. Cause it was. It was an off eve for the Diamond One. We are not talking about the tour of '99 four tears after the fact. Were not talking about his make up. Were certainly not talking about loving Hagar in any sense of the fucking word. And yes, we all know and love the boots from the site. Which we've been enjoying for quite a bit longer than when your rebel forces from the death star dragged your ass in here. So speak not- You've been told.

It was indeed painful to watch Dave on that show that night. I remember covering my eyes like it was a horror movie or something.

But, like most of you, I was pissed as Hell with Robin Williams for being such a cocksucker. He's done more stupid humor than Dave ever did. Probably twice as much blow too.

I think he didn't get laughs on that last joke because everyone in the audience was Catholic.

Also, notice how Dave is 10 years ahead of the curve? Referring to Jackson and plowing the way for everyone else to play in Vegas.

What a pioneer.
What a visionary.
What a rock star.

04-13-2005, 07:06 PM
That was good interview, bruddahs! The only things that were disgrace was Dave's hair cut (are we 7 yrs old Dave?), and Robin William's CONSTANT interrupting. Uh Robin, I'm going to tell Jay another joke, please feel free to interrupt and destroy the joke's momentum any time you're ready.

Just because the audience and Jay Leno are too ignorant to understand GENIUS doesn’t make the jokes unhumorous. Remember, a falling tree makes a noise regardless if anyone is around to hear it. A brilliant joke is funny REGARDLESS if people laugh.

And YES, the last joke was about 17 yr old girls. SO obvious. Wake up and smell the toxic waste!

The Mambo Slammers Live in Vegas never got the time to tune in,
like a new sitcom, Time to develope and he went on leno to early?

I have watched 1 hr of Leno since He started maybe a few more
when some Superstar Slut is on. I find him Fake and the Biggest
Hollywood Kiss Up- Kiss Ass ever ....Watch Letterman OR DIE!!!

Robin Williams (Andy Kauffman wanna be)has been doing the same
-Do you want to touch my pee pee- jokes For thirty YEARS I never
got Mork and still don't he is a grand ASS!Non-Funny jerk humor.

Leno went out of his way to Make Dave -off guard -I've seen this several times and the original air date .

You cannot touch Leno when It comes to Vintage Cars Bikes etc.
He gets down with them and i respect him highly When he isn't
sucking dik on the tonight show.

He seems so diff when the show is on like he got a prod up his ass

Leno was the wrong place. Dave got no response from him and
Robin Williams attention whored the whole show, like he allways does.

Dave is Center Stage and needs Center Stage.

I will allways wait for Dave to Give Vegas another shot, same venue,
for a year or so to really Hone a top notch show to the Edge of reason.

Thought I'd bump this old thread with the longshot hope that maybe someone could upload this TV appearance.

I remember Robin Williams saying - " Ohhh Baby...Daddy gonna make you squeal like a fax machine tonight " , or something along those lines. Then Dave turned and gave him some kinda " STFU this is my time pal" look and Robin was quiet after that. At least that's the impression I got from what's I remember.

Blows my mind he passed away today. RIP

Seems the popular thing to do!

Guess by doing that you will never get pussy from the daughters of suicide victims....but hey....let's make hay while the borderline personalities shine!

If we are all alive when Dave does it...I hope we get to see the fucks peeing on his grave as well...the manic fuck!

I am sure it will be tasteful! Potassium and THC!

Expect Expectorant!

Long Life Dave! I am sure you are celebrating the death as well! Cocaine and Robin never entered his life I am sure. Dave I think never presented himself as a stand up comedian. And I think David presents the opposite from suicide....but I could be wrong. Dave could be hiding it....but I think not. Robin was intimidated....hence the "dying from smoke" reference. Cue personal dying insults from not the Queen of all Media in a second. Give me some details from your life....we will fucking rock...I am sure your sister will laugh more than you do. May she RIP. Wanna Rock?

Can't wait until the crass pass. Then your guidance will transcend our grief! You high flying beautiful talented people.

Btw. Should we start a ton teen?

Or...is it too soon?

I can actually do some improv,..anybody's close friends or family die today? Give me some material. I did a great Payne Stewert as a pilot on Halloween the night he died......come on...don't be shy. Let's Rock! Sit on your pet today...give me the name...I guarantee some intertnetmaimment.*TM

Hey Sarge! Find me some recent deceased's I am ready. Any Recent People that died as part of the Army? Let's Rock it...we will have their kids rolling in the isle!

Again...don't be fucking shy. It will be tasteful. And funny. Kristy will plagiarize me though....just like her chat box Donnie earlier today. She has not thought about teeth until someones's sister punches hers out. Thank God Big Mouth's don't last long. Just ask their grieving families.

I don't know how old that joke about the crap car was 20 years ago but I think it was already pretty old at that point.

The disappointing thing about the Vegas show for me was that Dave seemed to be trying to copy a poor stand-up rather than doing his own thing which was and is much more original and entertaining.

I think if it had been the other way around and Robin Williams had come on and sang a lame rock cover Dave would not have appreciated it.

Both Dave & Robin were entertaining and had a nice handshake. At the time Dave's new haircut was kind of a surprise I guess.

Internetmaimment*TM Internet Maim Entertainment. Believe me they did not invent it. They do not have the creativity to kill them selves. Lol. Seriously. They are like teachers in summertime.....no class. Elbow and Kchristy.....I do think they are headed together. I am not sure which will sit on each's other's lap there...not that there is anything wrong with that.

The true fighters will be determined. Most of us that have done stuff already know.

*TM My new word after Robin. Like their hero Trump. I will split the nickel with you.

Lol Angel... will you think they will ever pay up?

I betcha nothing creative will happen from both of them...and they will never pay us. Half a nickel. No Math for them...no English...nothing but... Butt.

Ok Angel you use the strap on with Elboy and I will just allow Krychisty to watch. Nope they still will not pay us in Vegas. Sigh...Fucking Communists.
