I noticed several threads and posts bitching about RealPlayer format file (ra/ram) being used on the R.A. site. Maybe this will help.

A lot of great sites use RealPlayer because the file sizes are much smaller, than Windows Media Player file formats et. al., so this helps keep the monthly broadband bills from ripping the site owners a new ahole.

Smaller file sizes are also a lot easier for dialup users to download and enjoy. What I don’t like about RealPlayer is the company sucks, and the player can screw up the settings on your computer.

However, use an older version of RealPlayer, go into the Preference settings, and turn off all the crap RealPlayer has checked automatically, uncheck Windows Media Player and QuickTime file formats that RealPlayer has automatically checked, (if you are using either/both) and you will be fine for great sites like this one.

A good free version is RealPlayer Gold. Google for:

realoneplayerv2gold.exe

download, then virus/adware/malware check, before installing. File size is 8200 – 8400 KB, depending on exact version extension.

After you have installed it, and cleaned/tweaked it, also do the following.

To Stop Real Player Calling Home & Trying to Update:

Find file realsched.exe and change it to realsched.exe.xxx

On Windows OS systems, also go into your System Configuration>Start Menu, and uncheck any RealPlayer startup crap that resides there.

For advanced user, I have other tweaks to stop RealPlayer Network from serving up ads, utilizing a specific Firewall and TCP/IP HOSTS file IP block list, and also registry hacks to cleanup some of the crap RealPlayer installs on your OS, but this is enough info at this juncture.

Hope this was of benefit…Peace

I like real player as well.
The ausio interview page has 40 interviews.
If those were in mp3 it would be a resource hog

RealAudio is not nearly as bad as it used to be.

Oh and also do a Google for "RealAlternative". It is a newer player made by someone OTHER THAN RealNetworks, and can play all RealMedia files.

Yelp, ra/rm is a great format, excellent quality/file size ratio.

Hey TB, I was just saying ra/rm format is really good for websites as to the quality/file size ratio, and bandwidth management factors.

Not for high end or professional use, as I never use it in this arena.

Also, I find *.rm is a pain in the ass to edit and work with. Lots of quarks. Always convert it to another format to work with. It's really a final "wrapper" format, not an editing/production format.

yeah, yeah, i know. and i understand why sites use it. but there's a lot of stuff i haven't seen, and when i seek it out, and find it, and it's in RM, i pass on it. it's not worth the hassle to me, i get aggravated over how shitty it looks, and that tubby-ass toilet bowl echo sound. same with Hardknockz jerky-ass shit vids he'd put up in Flash format or whatever he used. i'd rather drink myself numb and watch the fucking pink elephants than that shit... :D

Understand, but just convert it out of rm format, if you really want to keep it. Secondly, alot of vids and audios on websites are in very low density.

I'm mean people bitch about MP3's, and half the time they are in density's below 128Kbps. Re-encode them in 384 Kbps, and they sound 90% as good as FLAC's without the serious size overhead. Not that I really do anything in the MP3 arena anymore, personally.

Same for videos, less than 200 Kbps just doesn't cut it. I'm like you, why upload it if it's going to look shitty.

That is one of the things I really like about ddlr.com. Your great site is not so huge, that you can upload FLAC and HQ vids without killing yourself on monthly broadband costs.

Roth Army is such a monster site, it's hard to do that here without drowning Sarge in his site costs.

One of the things, I thought about was sponsoring a server to link into RothArmy to host the high quality audios and videos, for donor members. Haven't talked to Sarge, but it would bridge the operating cost situation, and really step the Download Forum up for the membership.

But on the other hand, ddlr.com is hosting a lot of killer HQ auds and vids, so why get greedy. Support you guys in this arena, and everyone wins.

What do you think?

i think when i re-encode something from RM to another format it still looks like shit. :D i've tried that, and i still don't like the way it looks. can't fill in the holes, ya know?

i like having two sites, i think they complement each other. different vibes and opinions are always good.

I have never had any problem cleaning up a *.rm video. Probably just holding my drink the right direction.

Agree with you about both sites. I' m personally really glad ddlr.com exists, and the front page amp graphics is cool!

Who developed all that? Von?
