A double suicide bomb attack at the Karni commercial crossing in northern Gaza left five dead and at least 10 wounded late Thursday night.

According to initial reports, two suicide bombers infiltrated the area and blew up simultaneously on the Israeli side of the crossing.

Shortly after the massive explosion, gun battles erupted between security forces and Palestinian gunmen.

The two suicide bombers were counted in the tally of five dead, Channel 2 reported.

Israeli security officials confirmed that there are a large number of casualties, but have yet to clarify whether they were IDF soldiers or security guards employed by the airport authority.

Owing to the fierce gunbattles at the site of the explosion, Magen David Adom officials said they were having extreme difficulty in reaching the wounded in order to treat them.

They had thus far evacuated five wounded from the area, but additional wounded were waiting to be treated. MDA officials said that two of the victims were moderately wounded and two were severely wounded. They were evacuated to hospital by helicopter.

Security forces are searching the area to make sure that there are no additional terrorists in the area.

Fatah Al Aksa Martyrs' Brigades is claiming responsibility for the attack.

The organization claimed that they succeeded in sneaking a 100 kg bomb to the crossing. The attack was in response to the assassination of a member of the al-Aksa Martyrs' Brigades, the organization said.

Karni crossing is main crossing that transports food and all equipment between Israel and the Gaza Strip. The crossing was preparing to close for the night as the explosion occurred, Channel 2 reported.
