Johnny Carson, King of Late Night, Dies
Jan 23, 02:00 PM EST
By JEFF WILSON - Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Johnny Carson, the "Tonight Show" TV host who served America a smooth nightcap of celebrity banter, droll comedy and heartland charm for 30 years, has died. He was 79.

"Mr. Carson passed away peacefully early Sunday morning," his nephew, Jeff Sotzing, told The Associated Press. "He was surrounded by his family, whose loss will be immeasurable. There will be no memorial service."

Sotzing would not give further details, including the time of death or the location.

The boyish-looking Nebraska native with the disarming grin, who survived every attempt to topple him from his late-night talk show throne, was a star who managed never to distance himself from his audience.

His wealth, the adoration of his guests - particularly the many young comics whose careers he launched - the wry tales of multiple divorces: Carson's air of modesty made it all serve to enhance his bedtime intimacy with viewers.

"Heeeeere's Johnny!" was the booming announcement from sidekick Ed McMahon that ushered Carson out to the stage. Then the formula: the topical monologue, the guests, the broadly played skits such as "Carnac the Magnificent."

But America never tired of him; Carson went out on top when he retired in May 1992. In his final show, he told his audience: "And so it has come to this. I am one of the lucky people in the world. I found something that I always wanted to do and I have enjoyed every single minute of it."

His personal life could not match the perfection of his career. Carson was married four times, divorced three. In 1991, one of his three sons, 39-year-old Ricky, was killed in a car accident.

Nearly all of Carson's professional life was spent in television, from his postwar start at Nebraska stations in the late 1940s to his three decades with NBC's "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson."

Carson choose to let "Tonight" stand as his career zenith and his finale, withdrawing into a quiet retirement that suited his private nature and refusing involvement in other show business projects.

In 1993, he explained his absence from the limelight.

"I have an ego like anybody else," Carson told The Washington Post, "but I don't need to be stoked by going before the public all the time."

...damn. Some people, their influence is so big, you just think they themselves are going to live forever just like they're legacy.

Rest In Peace. Thanks for all the laughs and influencing anyone and everyone who were your contemporaries and who came after you.

(on the other hand, can't you just imagine St. Peter being forced into retirement, and Johnny conducting the interviews for new-comers to the Pearly Gates?)

That is unfortunate news, I remember sneaking into my parents room when I was little, just to see what was so funny. My mother use to laugh her self to tears. I am sure he will be missed. I had no idea he was ill.

Wow... that's terrible news.

Johnny was one class act, and he had more talent than Leno and Letterman combined.

I heard Carson was recently writing jokes for Lettermans' monologues because he couldn't stand Leno!

I wasn't a big Carson fan...but always appreciated the fact that he thought Letterman should have gotten the job...

it's not that he couldn't stand Leno...well...maybe it was...but he always knew it should have been Letterman's job from the start...

which is why his first late night appearance after leaving the tonight show was with Letterman...

fuck Leno...

long live Letterman...

and here's to you Carson...always a class act...

surprising this isn't getting more play...

Carson, Letterman and O'Brian are the ONLY names that come to mind when i think of Late Night variety shows.

Carson to me is like: Speed Racer, The Munsters, Lost In Space, The Andy Griffith Show etc. etc. etc.
It isn't so much that he was funny, it's that he was THE Original in the field...30 fucking years the man was in 12 million living rooms, and ours from birth until '92 (When yet another Dave was screwed out of his rightful position by a sub-par replacement), the day he closed the show on May 22, 1992.

Johnny was a staple in our home every night. I had my black and white TV tuned in before bed many nights after hearing the laughter coming from the TV room.
Then came Dave Letterman, and our generation had a copy of Carson of our own, and with attitude.

Johnny Carson was a genuine guy in my opinion, and he will be missed. It is true as someone said in this thread already. it's tough to believe because some people just give you the impression they will live forever.
His Legacy has already had 13 years to live, and today we all learned that he was never forgotten by anyone.

Goodnight, Johnny!

Carson was definitely a class act, a legend and the king of late night. The man's timing on his jokes was perfect, and no one will ever be able to fill his shoes ever. I like the part about him writing jokes for Letterman instead of Leno though. Leno bites. The only bit on Leno's show that I care for are the headlines and a fucking chimp could hold those up. I read a little more somewhere how Letterman would send Johnny the standard check for submitting material.....and Johnny Carson, class act that he was, would send the checks back, uncashed. RIP Johnny.

It's such a joke that you guys think this dude was so GRATE. He use to beat his wives and had a cold at Best relationship with most anyone that worked with him. Joan Rivers fucking hated him. He hated Ed. He treated comeidians like hookers. Motioning them over to the couch only if they were good enough. He was a fucking Ruthless control freak with litterally no love for anyone but himself.

But he made us chuckle so it's ok???

You're WRONG! I saw an interview where Joan Rivers was crowing about how she couldn't get work as a comedian for seven years until her one night on the Tonight Show, which kept her employed up until present day.

Yes he was a flawed, private human being. But he was an enormously successful rags-to-riches story that helped a lot of people in show business!

Blaming him for the failure of her piece of shit show, which I take it you had never seen (consider yourself fortunate). Yes Johnny was a ruthless competitor, but he was the king of late night that was subtly political and even anti-establishment. He survived many attempts to oust him from Ass-kisseo Hall and Pat Sajack, etc.

JOAN RIVERS NEVER WOULD HAVE BEEN ON STERN IF CARSON HADN'T HAD HER ON HIS SHOW IN THE LATE 60's or early 70's! She said she would never have had a career without him. She was a little bitter, but she surely respected what a tough prick Carson had to be to go from a Nebraska magician to the king of midnight.

Someone said Carson was fired from his first job for asking his radio station manager if he wanted "to see something funny?" He then held up his pay check! Johnny had balls and brains and fuck Rivers, she and her yenta daughter can comment on celebrity fashions for eternity.

You're owned times infinity! Now send me naked pictures of Cherstar!;)

Actually I did see a news package on his first wife. Something happened there but I'm not sure how true it is since it was based on her claims after she wanted more money from him.

Originally, she owned 15% of Johnny's earnings from The Tonight Show. She gave it up after he was on for only a year thinking he wouldn't last. She took a deal of $160,000 in cash and like $13,500 a year for life.

She wasn't doing well after the 1970's and Johnny could have upped it, but she did make the deal.
