BRISTOL, Connecticut (Ticker) - Emmitt Smith, the NFL's all-time leading rusher, may go from player to owner in the span of a week.
According to multiple published reports, the 35-year-old Smith will announce his retirement imminently and may explore a role with the group attempting to purchase the Minnesota Vikings.
Smith, who is in Jacksonville, Florida for the Super Bowl, has spent the last two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. He spent his first 13 years with the Dallas Cowboys, anchoring a team that won three Super Bowls during his tenure there.
Slated to be a free agent in March, Smith has said he will retire a Cowboy and could sign a ceremonial contract with the club prior to ending his career.
A report in Minnesota claimed that Smith would be part of the investment group trying to buy the Vikings.
A disappointment with Arizona in 2003, Smith had 937 yards and nine touchdowns in 15 starts for the Cardinals last season.
Smith is the league's all-time leader in rushing yards (18,355), rushes (4,409) and rushing touchdowns (164). He is second all-time to Seattle's Jerry Rice in yards from scrimmage (21,579) and total touchdowns (179).
An eight-time Pro Bowl selection, Smith was a key component on Dallas' Super Bowl winning teams in 1992, 1993 and 1995. He was named MVP of the game following the 1993 season.
