View Full Version : What's the deal with RWTD?

I've heard all the stories about how the incorrect tape was used when assembling BOVI, it was an accident etc., etc., but I'm wondering why that version would even exist? My impression was the band just got in the studio, and cranked out the songs as if they were live, except for the vocals and an odd guitar overdub, but basically live. Would there be a reason for someone to actually cut the tape and put it together in a different order? Unless the band recorded it twice, each time different, but that's obviously not the case based on how exact they are to each other besides the order of the choruses.

Any clarification?

I have one of the screwed up ones and it is pretty funny.

Mezro...you shake your head about shit like that...how did it get through?...didn't any of the band members pick the mistake up?...

It certainly is trippy.

After hearing it 25000 times, then whoops.

So nobody has any idea why that version even existed in the first place?

I'm sure there are more than one mix of every VH song.

DLR7884
Does that answer your question?

Forgive my ignorance of recording techniques, but my impression of the recording of that album was that they just laid it down live. Are you saying that the engineer and producer rearranged what they had recorded afterwards?

I'm not calling you ignorant....it's just that I don't understand why it matters so much to you how it happened.

Were the songs that showed up on BOV1 remastered?

DLR7884
Maybe that had something to do with it....I don't know.

I wasn't using ignorant with negative connotations. . .no worries.

I was just hoping maybe there was an interesting story behind it that I hadn't heard yet, that's all. I guess there isn't.

Nope....someone just really fucked up.

DLR7884
I wish I had a copy of it.

It was the first VH cd I bought, so I didn't realize anything was wrong with it. Then when I finally bought VHI, I was confused why the real version was "wrong".

the producer and engineer may have spliced the tape for a different arrangemtn, or the band could have done tow different arrangements.

shows how much care the brothers put into BOV1 with that glitch.

or maybe they did it intentionally, to create a "collector's item"

When I read the thread title, I figured it was a question about devil worship or the true meaning of the song, so I'll just go with that.

I don't think it has anything to do with devil worship or advocating satanism or anything.

It's just a down-to-earth, feel-good benchmark that had alot of folks from any number of rock-n-roll genres scratching their collective noggins when it came out.

"Running With the Devil" is a common-phrase colloqialism for living at a pace and a style that goes against traditional values and the old proverb of "early to bed, early to rise, etc etc".

When the VH song was first heard, people thought it was posturing. but Dave has proven to be essentially the guy in the sing's lyric.

Bless.

I have wondered about this as well...it couldn't be an altenative mix.

The order of verses makes sense on the original. But on the fucked up version Dave says "Tell ya all about it" after he has already told ya all about it. Seems intentional.

They recorded it live, yeah. However, that doesn't mean the recording isn't edited. They recorded it while playing together normally, rather than individual parts, making it live, but could have done anything with that recording afterwards.

Finally someone comes close to answering my original question!

But still, why fuck with perfection? (hypothetical, I don't really need an answer)

I guess you'd need to ensure that the sound levels are alright, boost it where it's needed etc.

Still, how do you know if you've achieved perfection, if you don't experiment? And that can be hypothetical too :)

Another thing it could be is to try and make Dave look bad? You know what the sisters are like. I noticed they also added the two new songs with Dave at the end of the album, to try to disguised them as Van Hagars. (My opinion on that anyway)
