What are the best 'best of...' or 'greatest hits of...' CDs you've ever bought?

I can't think of any really good ones, i.e must-have items.

Are they ever worth buying or are they just a markteting ploy to get us to spend more?

Perhaps we are better off getting the albums and making our own compilations?

Are you talking about "best of" or "greatest hits" albums in general? Or are you talking about a specific brand name like "Millenium?"

Either way, VH Best of Vol. 1 is essential if you want MWM and CGSTNM.

DLR7884
Please clarify.

Gentlemen,

Considering much of today's American music market is crap owned by giant corporations, the attitude of compiling compilations is probably the same.

I'll just stick to best-ofs and greatest hits on import LOL!

Yes, in general.

BTW I agree about best of Vol.1 that is a must-have CD but apart from that one?

I would say that buying a greatist hits album is a good way to save money if it is an artist that you aren't a huge fan of.

For instance....I'm not a huge Genesis fan, but I own 2 albums of theirs...."Invisible Touch" and "Greatest Hits-We Can't Dance."

I don't want to buy all of their albums, to be honest.

So to answer your question....it really depends on the band and how much you like them.

DLR7884
Good?

For me it is a must have....I don't feel like buying a shitload of Beatles albums.

DLR7884
Again...a band I appreciate and can listen to, but I don't love them or anything.

Here`s some:

Queen "Greatest hits"
Led Zeppelin "Remasters"
Diamond Head "Am I evil?-The Anthology"
Judas Priest "Metalworks 1973-93"
Manowar "Anthology"
The Cult "Pure Cult"

Handy for the car etc.

That's it in a nutshell. Best of CDs are really just for bands that you half like and don't want to buy all their albums. The thing is you miss out on the vibe that an album has.

Sometimes songs on an album you didn't like at first really grow on you and those are usually ones that wouldn't end up on a best of CD.

STEVE MILLER BAND - GREATEST HITS, 1974-78.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000002U98/qid=1109775542/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl15/002-1495125-8936862?v=glance&s=music&n=507846

It's one amazing song after the other, and it plays like a real album.

The Doors - Greatest Hits.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000002H22/qid=1109775618/sr=1-4/ref=sr_1_4/002-1495125-8936862?v=glance&s=music

I;'m gonna get shit for saying this, but if it ain't on there, it's a Morriosn tune not worth owning (aside from Peace Frog)

Blur - The Best of

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005176F/qid=1109775701/sr=2-1/ref=pd_ka_b_2_1/002-1495125-8936862

A great British band, with a brilliant guitarist. All their albums are good, but do contain some filler. This wheedles it out.

ZZ Top - Rancho Texicano

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0001ZXM54/qid=1109775752/sr=2-2/ref=pd_ka_b_2_2/002-1495125-8936862

Good selection, and solid remastering. Their original great hits is also excellent if you want to avoid their mid-80s pop stuff. Alas, in need of remastering. Badly.

The Rolling Stones - Hot Rocks

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000003BDJ/qid=1109775849/sr=2-1/ref=pd_ka_b_2_1/002-1495125-8936862

Covers the early years, and, again, plays like an album.

Can't recommend the Steve Miller one enough. It should be the standard for any artist considering a greatest hits collection.

Led Zeppelin is not a "best of" type of band.

Just like Pink Floyd.

DLR7884
You need to listen to the whole album.

Indeed. IN THE LIGHT isn't on any of their BEST OF's, I believe. But it's one of their greatest moments.

The VH Classic is better, but I think someone else has ripped it off from you. I saw someone weith it earlier, swaer to God.

I assumed you passed the torch to update to this.

This is great 'cause of the motion play. I'm a sucker for it.

Maybe if you go back to the VH Classic get the white stripe thing to "ocean wave"? I have no idea how this would be done.

Back in Black is a very good album but I don't understand why people WORSHIP that CD....it's not THAT good. Highway to Hell kicks that album's ass.

Anything with Bon Scott kicks the ass of anything with Brian Johnson.

Back in Black was the last album they made with Bon and the
first with Brian, thats why it kicks ass.

You might be thinking WTF ??? Think about it. AC/DC were
still in BON mode and wanted to honour him. Although his
vocals are not on that album, his spirit is.

Great album. But its true every BON AC/DC album beats
the Brian era. However the Brian stuff is great too !

I think Brian did a great job. Kept the integrity of the band.

Unlike faggy Hagar.

I actually stole it from "Little Texan."

I do like the new one, but it's too small...

Essential ELO

Allman Bros. Greatest hits

John Lee Hookers Greatest hits

Essential FREE

So many bands, like classic VAN HALEN & LED ZEPPELIN, have many GREAT songs that would never appear on a "greatest hits" comp. Your better off digging into their catalog and finding the hidden gems!!!

Eh,m if it's someone else's, keep this one. It is pretty fuckin' cool.

And lets folks know what you're about: if you don't know you're CVH, they're gonna FUCKIN' PAY. (it also restores but brings into a new, funnier context you're "can't you hear me knockin'" line)
