Depends on what Amp I'm using. Generally I have the Preamp set at about 5 or 6.

The groovetubes in that Amp are a waste, you should have bought a decent Amplifier to begin with, man.

Set the volume to 11, then play away :) None of this frollicky bollocks :)

Unless I use my FX pedal, in which case I find a patch (I haven't full tried them all out lol) that's not too fake - sounding and is bassy, and give that a whack.

So are all the knobs on your amp turned to full?

It actually doesn't sound to bad on a bass. Unless it's the knop which makes things vibrate.

I don't use the EQs, only the volume knobs. Occasionally I put a bass-boost on there, but that doesn't make a great difference.

That's the same bass amp that Tydhurst uses except his isn't a combo.

And Eyes get a marshall they'll never let you down and for the price they go for you will be stupid if you choose anything else.

JCM 800 is 10 times better than a 5150. Vintage Marshall Amps are FANTASTIC!!!!!

Personally, I really dig the 50 watt JMP2 and JMP3 heads from the early 70's.

Even Ed's gone back to using his Marshall these days.

Your right about what you say about vintage Marshall's though. I've got an old Plexi (a 68 or a 69), cranked up full with everything on 10 you've got that Classic Van Halen sound.

If you want more gain from an old Marshall just do the Yngwie thing and throw a DOD 250 overdrive infront of it.

I managed to coax some good tones out of a 5150 but I had to turn the pre gain down and push the power amp. The preamp on a 5150 sounds like shit to me. I can get a better tone using a Fender Twin and distortion peddles. Really.

Early 80's JCM 800 (100 watt lead 2) and a 4x12 equipped with 25 watt celestions.

Bass 10
Mid 6
Treb 8
Presence 6
Gain 7
Vol 4
Reverb 0

Just plug in a Les Paul Standard with an EMG 81 through an Ibanez analog delay, Boss DS-1 and GE-7 for two different lead tones, and a Crybaby bass wah that makes some unholy sounds when sweeping through the frequency range that is usually reserved for the bass.

That's what my guitar sound is made of

Lick My Love Pump is a piano song. Of course if Nigel ran his keyboard through an MXR flanger into a stack of Marshalls on 11 EVH style, Lick My Love Pump could turn into Deep Throat My Love Pump and Gag on the Cum.

On the Gallien-Krueger microlead, my tone settings are:

bass 10
low mid 7
hi mid 6-7
treble 8-9

Like all solid-state amps, because they amplify and clip at the lower wave first, the treble is usually piercing so I trim the treble down then up the louder I get.

the GK250ML has a cheap chorus I like with stereo 50w+50watt outputs to separate 16ohm cabinets.

My Roland Jazz Chorus head replaced it but got stolen, so what I was playing 20 years ago and put in the closet as spare became my main and only rig.

Instead of replacing the JC120 with another, I'll probably get two Marshall Mode 4 solid state heads to drive 4 cabs stereo chorus.

We'll see what my setting will be with those. Nothing beats solid state for clean channel, or clean-stereo chorusing.. separate channel amplification of a true (not emulated) stereo chorus effect was unbelievable at 200 watts, at 700 watts it's going to roar like an ocean.

Yeah it's of the same period.

Mine had shitty capacitors, I bought it kaput for $150 and replaced those shitty Nichicon electrolytic caps populating throughout the board.

I got 575 for it on ebay. They're still a bargain in the 600 dollar range.

If I can't get two Mode Four Marshalls for a grand, I might get a pair of 900's. But lately I've seen them for around 800 and for the poor heat tolerance/maintenance issue the way they're designed I'd rather have the Mode4.

On my JCM 800

Bass/Mid/Treble (5)
Reverb 4 (when its on)
Presence 6
pre vol/gain 11 !!!

I like the crunch you get at lower volumes with the
master volume down and the pre amp volume and
gain up to the max. Right at that point where the
the master volume is between 2 and 3...
These settings I love with high gain pickups...
Great distortion and harmonics.. (at least to
my ears)

Less visits from the cuntstables too....

At high volume I like to set everything pretty much
to 5... (but keep the gain right up)
