Very Subjective question, depends what you classify as Hard Rock. Was it the Beatles Revolution ? Was it Black Sabbath ? (1969).
Good Question.

Vanilla Fudge or Blue cheer.

I`m going for YES.

The only band worthy of your attention.

Yes, but you can`t in here.

You can`t even say "blue veined rock".

Ya know, I was thinking about this song when I posted, but for some reason thought it came out late 60's. I was thinking "Revolution" by the Beatles was out before this, but I Revolution was 67. So Kinks was 65. Farken Hell, that songs older than me.

Totally forgot about Blue Cheer, I think they were the first. Who then, would we call the first Metal Band ??

No arguments from me, I think Priest are grate. But didnt Sabbath release their first album before Priest ?

Correct me if Im wrong, but Black Sabbath was released 69-70 ?
And Rocka Rolla 73-74 ?

Mr Badguy

Yes, but I always consider Sabbath an experimental jazz/blues band who didn`t know what the fuck they were doing, which even they admit.

They never strayed from their formula of cement mixer riffs and gloomy lyrics.

Priest defined the genre during the period 1975-80 where they made the evolutionary leap from 70`s ten minute epics to the short controlled bursts of chart friendly anthems.

Along the way they invented dualling twin lead guitars and screaming high pitched vocals, the identification of Heavy Metal and leather/studs, took double bass drumming to a new level ("Exciter" from "Stained class"), the first HM act to use a motorbike for promotion, innovators in concept promo videos ("Breaking the law" and "Hot rockin`"), the only band ever to feature a bullwhip on "Top of the pops" etc.

They even had the "Spinal tap" revolving drum throne.

I could go on but you get the picture.

And that`s not to mention having a gay frontman and a convicted rapist in the drumstool (eat your heart out, Thunderstick).

"Sad wings of destiny" was the first HM album of the modern age.

I dont disagree with anything you are saying, except that Sabbath (knowingly or unknowlingly) to me, was the first metal band. Also a
lot of people would argue that Led Zep (69) was the first metal band.

Ive always thought that Metal was born from those three.
Anyway you look at it, the Brits really were the pioneers.

If it weren't for the Brits, music would suck these days.

That's the only thing we as Amercians owe these fucking people.

Thank you!

Priest wasn't "blues-based".The "Hero,Hero" compilation is a good answer to the subjective question.

That`s why I picked Priest as the first real METAL band.

Black Sabbath was "blues based", where as Priest never made any bones about being a metal band.

They still don`t, in a time when "metal" is not a cool way to describe your band.

They lead from the front, as they`ve always done.
