In German, there´s an idiom that means, literally translated

a sparr in the hand is better than a dove on the roof.

It more or less means that having a little is better than having nothing and dreaming of a lot.

What´s the related English idiom??

I'd go with Carmine's interpretation.....on the other hand....

"You're shit out of luck!" always fits nicely. :gulp:
