What do you all reckon the heaviest Van Halen song is ??
And to complement the choice, the softest ??
(If there is such a thing !)
Ive got some ideas but dont want to kill the thread before
it even starts....

Softest, again tough- Little dreamer,woman in love,secrets.
man that is tough to narrow down to just one each.

How about Happy trails as a soft one. cant get any softer than that one.

I'm going to agree with House of Pain as probably the heaviest, at least as far as tonal quality goes. Followed by Sunday Afternoon In The Park. Lyrically, I'd say Mean Streats followed by Jump (any song that uses suicide as a main thematic element is pretty heavy in my book)
Lightest would be Secrets (very lite-fm sound), Big Bad Bill (bop jazz) or Could This Be Magic (frothy CCR swamp blues).

Softest: Secrets, dancing in the streets, I'll wait, big bad bill.
Some parts of "So this is love" are pretty mellow, but then, once you settle into that E.Z. chair, that solo punches you in the face, kicks you out of the chair, and then rapes you. After the solo, you can get up, grab a cold one, sit back down and enjoy the rest of the song.
Heavy: fools
Soft: secrets(sorry secrets nothing again you,it's just about the song...soft but good!!!!!)

Big Bad Bill ain't so soft...if it were played on electric guitar with the volume on stun, it would be apparent that the chords move fairly quick and it's up-tempo (taher than Secrets mid-tempo pace).
Same goes for "Could This Be Magic?"

Yeah, the clarinet thing got it lumped in there.
I got nothin' but love for vaudevillian remasters, but that clarinet sound ruins it.
It's like some redneck blowin' in an empty moonshine jug.

Light up the Sky is one crazy mixed song. I mean that in the BEST way. Fast...Slow...great chorus awesome solo. I put it up there with Outta Love Again. and both are on my fav. album. II. I find VH2 to be one of the most underrated cvh albums ever. creative as a mo-fo. ;)

amen...dave tried to save it but it was cheesy anyway...and it was getting worse...
atomic punk for me is the hardest song because it sounds very raw and "unpolished"...good to hear that dave has chosen that song for the last playlists!

Yeah ,you're right .I listened VH 2 this past few days and it's a kick ass album;Bottom up is a good song also.I think that 's one of the best Vh's album for a drummer!

Heavy; DOA, Unchained, Me Wise Magic because listen to how aggressive dave's vocals are. These are what I crank up with the windows down and speed above posted! *LOL*
Soft; Women In Love, Dance The Night Away, I'll Wait (but it seems too popish and that was a foreshadow of what we were about to be subjected to via Spammy McGee)

HEAVY: dirty movies, romeo delight, house of pain, on fire...MANY cvh songs have moments of heaviness and sinister riffs...girl gone bad, mean street...
SOFT: big bad bill (no distortion whatsoever and a clarinet!), dance the night away, could this be magic (the bomb)...
...and the heaviest of the spammy shit ranks WAY DOWN below ALL CVH!!! as for the softest of it, john tesh or michael bolton wouldn't play it!

crazy drum work on this album. In fact Id say that this album has the best Alex drum work on all the VH albums. IMO.

DOA, Beautiful Girls & YRGM are too similar for me. Guitar wise that is. Not knocking any of them. I find DOA to be the weakest effort on VH2. But on a scale of 1 to 10. (10 being best) This just means DOA ranks 9 instead :D
