Any fans in the Army?

It was what, 12-14 years ago when "Loser" became a huge hit and that made Beck a star. It also made me buy the Mellow Gold-album, and some of the older ep:s, and I've been hooked ever since.

He really hit the jackpot with the genius album "Odelay"...mixing various styles from folk music to hip hop, rock and electronica...and has done that ever since, even releasing a totally acoustic album "Sea change". I must say I've enjoyed all his stuff through the years, and I just got the latest "Guero"...getting into it now. I don't think he's ever gonna be able to do another album as brilliant as "Odelay", no matter what.

How about you others, anybody here with a Devil's haircut or did Satan gave you a taco?

" Satan gave me a taco and it made me really sick
The chicken was all raw and the grease was mighty thick
The rice was all rancid and the beans were so hard
I was gettin' kinda dizzy eatin' all the lard
There was aphids on the lettuce an' I ate every one
An' after I was done the salsa melted off my tongue
Pieces of tortilla got stuck in my throat
An' the stains on my clothes burned a hole through my coat
My stomach was a-tremblin' and I broke out in a rash
I was so dry and thirsty and I didn't have no cash
So I went and found a hose, tore off all my clothes
Turned on the water and it shot right up my nose
Some old lady came along and she thought I was a freak
So she beat me with a handbag till I could hardly speak
I was lying there naked, my body badly bruised
In a pool of my own blood, unconscious and confused
Well, the cops came and got me and threw me in their van
And I woke up on the ceiling and I couldn't find my hand
They took me to the judge, his eyes a-glowin' red
The courtroom was filled with witches and the dead
Well, the sheriff was a hellhound with fangs and claws
The prisoners were tied up and chained to the walls
The air was gettin' thick; the smoke was gettin' thicker
The judge read the verdict: said, "Cut off his head!"
Well, they placed me on the altar, and they raised up the axe
My head was about to explode when I noticed the Marshall stacks
I noticed all the smoke machines, cameras and the lights
Some guy with a microphone, runnin' around dancin' in tights
And I noticed the crew and the band playin' down below
And I realized I was in a rock video

So I went and joined the band and I went out on tour
And I smoked a lot of heroin and I passed out in manure
I made out with the groupies, started fires backstage
I made a lot of money and I gave it all away
Well, the band got killed, so I started a solo career
And I won all the awards and I drank all the beer
I opened up a taco stand just to smell the smell
Cookin' with the devil, fryin' down in hell"

Oh yeah...plus he witnessed the famous VMA event pretty dahm closely...AND was on Dave's side when discussing the "incident"...I think that's already a reason to give this talented fucker a chance!

AND he appered on Futurama!

"Odelay IS a word. Look it up in the Becktionary!"

I'm not sure if I like Beck or just the idea of Beck, though. He's always been kind of hit or miss for me but I love the fact that he never does the same thing twice.

I think that with his folk music background, he's kind of a Dylan 2000, he's basically all meat and potatoes (or how do you express it), but he's been able to take it to the next level...update it with all the "modern stuff"...and Beck also works live.

Roguesgirl, I suggest you get "Odelay" if you find it on the nice price-section or something...

I think I like Futurama even more than the Simpsons...it doesn't make you laugh all the time, but it's a very, very intelligent cartoon...

I gave Odelay alot of PT when it came out.

Beck's got balls, he does what he wants.

Just like another artist I know.

He's the man.

True dat.

" Can't you hear those cavalry drums
Hijacking your equilibrium
Midnight hags in the mausoleum
Where the pixilated doctors moan
Carnivores in the Kowloon night
Breathing freon by the candlelight
Coquettes bitch slap you so polite
Till you thank them
For the tea and sympathy

I want to defy
The logic of all sex laws
Let the handcuffs slip off your wrists
I'll let you be my chaperone
At the halfway home
I'm a full grown man
But I'm not afraid to cry

Neptune's lips taste like fermented wine
Perfumed blokes on the Ginza line
Running buck wild like a concubine
Who's mother never held her hand
Brief encounters in Mercedes Benz
Wearing hepatitis contact lens
Bed and breakfast getaway weekends
With Sports Illustrated moms

I want to defy
The logic of all sex laws
Let the handcuffs slip off your wrists
I'll let you be my chaperone
At the halfway home
I'm a full grown man
But I'm not afraid to cry"

I think "Sea Changes" stayed in my 6 disk holder for about 2 years.

I love his stuff.

Oh fuck.

All the years I've been a Beck fan, bought all his albums...and now I find out that this musical genius is a Scientologist.

It's been a while since the last post. Still think "Odelay" is the masterpiece, but love "Sea Change" and "Modern Guilt" as well.

And yeah, he wasn't offended by what Dave did in VMA '96, only EVH and AVH did.

Modern Guilt is poop. The rest of his albums are genius. Have you heard any of his bootlegs Awe? The Sexx Laws tour was fucking awesome. Any soundboard from 1999-2001 is just tight funky spacerock. There are some on Dime. Highly recommended.

That is one guy I have never seen live and he never tours and he definitely never comes to Florida. I fear he'll never get a checkmark on my list :(

Zing!

Guero is classic - his best album in my opinion. And yes, he knew the score in '96.
