Enjoy it! I've had the pleasure of seeing Ronnie James Dio repeatedly over the years, and met him in person several times. Dio ALWAYS puts on a top notch show, and you'll be amazed and what kind of voice he has at his age.

His music is great; if you've ever heard "Man On the Silver Mountain" or "Long Live Rock and Roll" by Rainbow, that'll give you a good layout idea (as Rainbow, and those two songs, was a band he was in with Ritchie Blackmore, who was at that time (1975) right out of Deep Purple). After Rainbow, he replaced Ozzy Osbourne as lead vocalist in Black Sabbath and was there from late 1979 until early 1983; his time in Sabbath established further the groundwork that would base his solo career in the band Dio.

As far as the band Dio itself is concerned, the biggest, most well known hits they had were "Holy Diver", "Rainbow in the Dark", "We Rock" and "The Last in Line". The early Dio material, lyrically, is very Dungeons and Dragons'ish (songs about rainbows, wishing wells, dragons, wizards, etc) at times, but Ronnie brought to the board a very mystical, very poetic way of doing it. The difference between himself and everyone else that did it is that Ronnie put his lyrics in a way that was easily memorable, and you'd catch yourself singing along in no time at all. The songs are closer to being anthems, but they're easily memorable and always fun to listen to.

For more information, take a look at his home page.

And furthermore, this should have been in the Music forum, not main, but I'm sure somebody will catch that right quick :)

(is he any good) ohshitt..

I was at the Country Club in Reseda which held 3000 metalheads at the time, 1984.

Michael Schenker Group (MSG) is the top billing. Some opening band of wanks leaves the stage inbetween sets, and people see Ronnie James Dio walking around upstairs near the stage balcony.

Someone goes, "its DIO" and I swear to you the applause, the "DIO -DIO DIO.." lasted a full 5 minutes till the diminutive little guy got up and gave us all in the audience the "metal" sign both hands up, and took a bow.

.. and he wasn't even on the bill that night, just going to see the Schenker show.

Got a close story.

We went to see Dio in 2000, "Magica" tour as I remember...upstairs was none other than Mr. Geezer Butler, sitting around watching everything. We all noticed him easily, everybody was shouting and yelling "Geezer! Geezer!" while we were waiting for the first shitty opening band, he smiled and waved...thought for sure he'd join Ronnie on stage for a rendition of Neon Knights or something, but it didn't happen...

Yeah, if I had to pick one voice to represent the ultimate Metal singer it would be Ronnie James Dio. Last album I bought of his was Killing the Dragon, and I loved it. The man still has incredible pipes.

Was into Dio big time in the early 1980s.

Holy Diver and Last In Line are essential listening, in my book, for any hard rock fan. Got to see Dio twice, once on the Last In Line tour (Twisted Sister opened on the Last In Line show I saw, at the height of their Stay Hungry [We're Not Gonna Take It / I Wanna Rock] fame, but Dio fuckin' blew em away), and once on the Sacred Heart tour when Viv was still with the band. They came back again on the Sacred Heart tour when Craig Goldie had replaced Viv, but didn't bother going to that one.

Heard a boot online of Dio live from a few years ago. The band was doing I Speed At Night, from Last In Line (one of the best songs from that album), and wasn't expecting much. Can't remember who the guitarist was, although I don't believe it was Goldie...but the band nailed it.

You should have a great time

Can you believe he has been releasing records for almost FIFTY FUCKING YEARS?

His first single came out in the late 50s....like '58 or '59.

What an amazing career he has had.

He is in his 60s now, and still out touring and stuff!

Actually, the band on the first RAINBOW album WAS Elf.

Dio said he wouldn't join Blackmore unless he used Elf as his Rainbow line-up. It was more like Blackmore joining Elf.

However, like any line-up featuring Ritchie Blackmore-it was short-lived.

Danger, danger the queen痴 about to kill
There痴 a stranger, stranger and life about to spill
Oh no, move me out of harm
I need a spell and a charm
Fly like the wind
I知 no pawn, so be gone, speed on and on
Kill the king
Tear him down
Kill the king
Strike him down

Power, power it happens every day
Power, devour all along the way
Oh no, move me out of harm
I need a spell and a charm
Fly like the wind
I知 no pawn, so be gone, speed on and on
Kill the king

Treason, treason, the specter looms again
Treason, treason, the realm is safe and then
Oh no, move me out of harm
I need a spell and a charm
Fly like the rainbow
I知 no pawn, so be gone, speed on and on

Kill the king
Tear him down
Kill the king
Got to take his crown

Kill the king
He値l rule no more
Strike him dead

He値l rule no more
Strike him dead
The people roar
Kill the king
Take his head
Down, down, down, down
Oh, kill
Oh, kill
Oh, oh

Had the pleasure of being in the audience in Philly when Dio filmed the show for the concert video he released from the Sacred Heart tour. Great show once you got past all the dragon and wizards imagery. Of course back in the day it seemed killer, but watching it now it seems kinda lame. The music still rocks though.

Dio is one of the greatest metal voices of all time!

And such a great songwriter as well.

The best DIO album is his first solo outing, 1983's HOLY DIVER.

Classic, just classic tunes -- "Stand Up and Shout", "Holy Diver", "Rainbow in the Dark".

With Vivian Campbell buring up the fretboard, makes ya wonder why he's wasting his talent now playing in Def Leppard.

I admit, I lost track of Dio after the Vivian left the band.

Though, I thought Magica (2000) was pretty good, as was Killing the Dragon.
