Agreed!

Most Underated : David Gilmour
This guy is so good I dont know why people overlook him so much

Because everything he plays sounds the same and it's all boring.

most underated - Danny Gatton

Overrated: Hendrix. Seriously, does he have to be number one on every guitar list? He is another case of a guy dying too soon and fans projecting "what if he lived longer" greatness upon him.

Underrated: Ritchie Blackmore. He should be number 1 on every list.

They're both predominantly penatonic - Gilmour has amazing phrasing.

every note sings. Hammet does runs most of the time.

I'll add Eddie Van Halen to my underrated list. His playing with Van Hagar is slagged WAY too much.

Overrated :
1. Tom Morello - i dont know why he's hailed as the "last guitar hero" : all that whammy pedal wankery just annoys me.

2. Slash - he's a mediocre guitarist who was in a hugely successful band.

3. Ted Nugent - he just sucks.

Underrated:
1. Alex Lifeson
2. Chris Poland
3. Andy Laroque

Definitely don't see the big deal about Kirk Hammett. I dig what James did for Metallica rhythm-wise more than Hammets solos, which were, to me repetitive.

Eric Clapton, to me, was the weakest guitarist to come out the Clapton/Beck/Page Yardbirds triumvirate. Maybe what he was doing with Cream was mind-blowing for the time...but I'm not seeing it. I will say that when he's guesting with someone else (like when he toured with Roger Waters in the early-1980s on the Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking concert dates) he puts a lot more effort into his playing than when he's out front as a solo artist.

Gilmour....well, not a huge Pink Floyd fan. Never really was. Guess from a composition point of view his stuff was ok. I recognize that a lot of what Floyd did still resonates with people, therefore has a timeless quality.

Nugent sucks, agreed. Even when he was at his apex, just a bunch of sped-up pentatonic blues licks.

Slash was kind of a retro-breath of fresh air when GnR hit big, in that he didn't sound like another Eddie Van Halen clone. But Slash sounded best when paired with Izzy. They had a nice mesh of styles going on.

Satriani and Vai just leave me cold. Always have. Too much technical ability for their own good, and when they try to play with emotion, it sounds like they're making an effort to.

Zakk Wylde is talented, but like Vai he makes an effort to be a guitar god, as opposed to, say, EVH who just WAS a guitar god without even trying.

Underrated: Andy Summers, STP's DeLeo.

Jeff Beck gets plenty of props from other guitar players, rightfully so.

Lot of players think Hendrix gets too much attention, but the man was brilliant. Take a listen to Machine Gun from the Band of Gypsys album, about mid-solo. Then check out Castles Made of Sand.

C.C. DeVille overrated? Has anyone, anywhere ever said he was good? He probably doesn't care, though. Just went out and wailed Ace Frehley-style licks, got paid, collected his loot and got laid.

Andy Summers was the bomb. He and Copeland were the best parts of the Police for me, unlike so many others who thought the band started and ended with Sting.

I think that Ace Frehley (sp) was a bit overated.

Think that Stevie Ray Vaughn was underated, until naturally his death. If anyone on this site has seen Eric Tessmer, it's a great example of Stevie's continued influence on guitarists.

Saw this guy in Austin, and he blew the crowd away.

aesop, I don't think CC DeVille is overated, his guitar solo on Poison's Live album was voted the worst of all time.

someone said steve vai is overrated? wtf have you listened to him play on his albums probably better than evh

Can't really think of an overrated one. I never personally cared for Ace Frehley or Alex Lifeson, but, you know, other people love their stuff, so who am I to say that it isn't any good. MAYBE I'd say Dave Navarro, but then I loved his work on the first Jane's album and Nothing's Shocking.

Uunderrated: Graham Coxon, formerly of Blur. The guy can play, and he continuously found unique parts to either complement teir best songs or find an interesting angle on their more pop material.

(Don't judge them exclusively by "Song 2" (you know, the "wooo-hoo!" tune). Fuckin' diverse bunch.)

Neil Young. Love his soloing style. Listen to "Like a Hurricane" sometime while driving 80 miles per hour in the rain after midnight. The best feeling in the world. Or the entire "Ragged Glory" album. The man knows how to get the most out of his feedback.

Kevin Shields, of My Bloody Valentine: though i don't think this is the gorup that would really enjoy him. Lots of effects and weird tunings.

Underrated--Dave Davies of the Kinks

I friggin' hate Clapton.

For a guy who has been a heroin addict, bandmates with Ginger Baker, experienced many good friends and bandmates die and/or go insane, endured the tragedy of his son go flying out a penthouse window, etc etc, he sure is a boring fucking guitar player.

Joe Perry has been overated since Aerosmith Rocks....
Pete Townsend also overated. Can't think of one solo that I enjoyed.

Alex Lifeson = one very underated guitarist.

Terry
04-29-2005, 10:41 PM
Alex Leifson has been way underrated, for sure.

Don't think Ace has been overrated. Think he gets props from so many rock guitarists who made it big in the 1980s and were in their twenties because for many of 'em Ace was the guy whomade you want to pick up a guitar in the first place, then listening to Eddie made you wanna learn how to play it.

Joe Perry was never that great, technically. Dude did write some classic tunes back in the day, before Aerosmith put their collective noses up Desmond Childs' ass in the late 1980s.

Pete Townshend has always been a bit underrated, in my book. Far more important as an influence to rock guitarists than Eric Crapton. Encouraging to see I'm not alone in thinking Clapton has always been overblown. Page came up with some amazing compositions and got a great sound for Zep.

Nirvana was more about riffs and rhythm than guitar skill. That was the point of Nirvana. They destroyed hair metal (which is good or bad?)
