Mods and webbies aren't the only ones who can get info from IP's ya know. I have a couple of programs that allow me to do that just by clicking on a post.
PM's and emails work the same way.
I can trace anything back to it's origin once it's submitted to cyber space.
It is how i have been able to collect some addresses for future vacations i am planning.

I can do amazing things with a Social Security number as well, and all of it legal.
I can access your credit rating, bank accounts, job information, work history, family history, etc.
And ALL of it LEGAL and for a nominal fee per year.
It only becomes ILLEGAL if i do something to alter the information or steal your identity, which i would never do to anyone.

I just may want to reach out and touch you the next time i'm in your area, so i collect info.
I have also tricked some people into clicking on links to my own website in the past, and i get a plethera of info from that visit for sure.

Like i said, the days of being an anonymous individual behind a computer monitor are long gone. My friend who is an IT guy came by today and we had a great chat about IP's. He told me how to go about searching/reading people's Ip's. Great info and I plan on using it... Makes it nice that you can actually get Ip's from some emails and chat services..

You can get an IP from ANYTHING that is submitted on the internet.
Once it is sent out, there is a permanant written record of it on the server it was sent on and it is cached on the hard drive of the person who sent it.
Little known fact is that when someone deletes a file from their computer there is still a copy of that file stored in numerous places on their machine.

I learned the hard way NOT to sell off an old machine. I destroy hard drives when i am done with them.
A big hammer and a cozy fire goes a long way in protecting years of surfing activity, lol.

Well, i'd like to hear how this happened, but only because this issue has been thrown out into the public forum.
I have known the upper brass of this site for years and know personally that nobody would abuse their power in that fashion, maybe other ways, lol, but not with people's IP's.

Now there have been members, one in particular, that has requested IP info from me while i was a mod here, but i fabricated the answers to their questions to protect the people involved and diffuse the situation.
If by chance, someone gets information from me that they use to harm another, i couldn't live with that on my conscience.

But i collect info for my own use by those i consider, how do i say, "unstable individuals", lol, much like myself at times.......:)

Maybe we need a thread about internet laws and practices since i see people doing things everyday that could land them in legal trouble.
Do you all understand that if you make even the slightest threat against someone, and they turn up dead tomorrow, YOU will be an instant suspect when their hard drive is examined?

For instance, Fab says she's gonna send her brother out to break some legs, and the person she said that to falls down and breaks a leg.....That person could press charges against her brother for breaking his leg out of spite and have written, documented proof that a threat was made...that's motive and intent right there and then the burdon of proving he didn't falls on his lawyer, which by then is an uphill battle.

The phrase "It's only the internet, don't take it seriously" is bullshit.
Some people had better "hope" people don't take it seriously or they could find themselves in a criminal or civil suit defending themselves.

It's not as much of an un-monitored playground as people would like to think and you don't need a police report to file a law suit on someone. If you are both within the United States, you're fair game according to the local laws involved.

Threats are threats, insults are not threats, spamming isn't a threat but can be considered malicious conduct, having minors registered that have access to adult material is criminal, but the rules cover the sites ass in that respect and the minor is the one breaking the law as far as that goes here.....it's also a reason why i don't post porn anymore on any site, but that's just personal preference and not due to any laws being broken beyond the law regarding licensed pictures.
Then that all depends on if the site is non-profit or not as to whether it's illegal or not.

Folks, I have a folder filled with threats made back and forth, some, though rare, have been directed at me.
I started this a long time ago in order that i could be a witness to represent my fellow and fellowette mods should they become the target of an opportunist asshole.

And I can say this...there is no fucking way in hell any of them did anything dishonest concerning personal information. Owning pets is hard work. Very consuming yet so worth it. Unconditional love and all...Losing a pet is like heroin withdrawl for sure...And no pet ever replaces the one you lost.
