10,000 Maniacs.
Actually, it would have been a GREAT name for an 80s punk band - and that's what I assumed they were when I saw the first album on the racks at Record World and thought "COOL NAME!" and picked up the album simply because I was going to get an album full of screaming guitars and vitriol.
Suddenly there's friggin' Natalie Merchant sining fuckin' Peace Train. Boy, that still hurts...

These days, artists like "Iron and Wine" or Ani DiFranco are considered punk by punk aficionados.
Everything that is considered cliche about punk - three chords, screaming, loud, incometent guitars, the new punk is not. the only thing they have in common is the DIY ethos.
It might sound like folk to you...because that's what it is. After all, give it some thought, and you'll relaize Woody Guthrie was very much his days equivalent of punk.
