David Fricke is a piece of shit, he makes lists like this where he gives journalistic-blow jobs to Jack White just to stir up controversy and sell magazines rather than actually write good articles.

But yes, this is very old news.

And where the fuck is Slash on that list?

true, but do we really care about what this magazine thinks.

Frank Zappa once got asked by Rolling Stone to be on the front cover of their recent issue and Zappa said why should they use him to sell their magazine and told them to fuck off!

Here's A real list That Rolling Stone AKA Jack White's Fan Club should consider.

1. Jimi Hendrix (The Ultimate Guitar God)
2. George Harrison (You Got have him at least in the Top10)
3. Eric Clapton (Layed Foundations for Hard Rock)
4. Jimmy Page (Inspired Ed, plus what he did with a Violin Bow is awesomer)
5. Tony Iommi (The Inventer Of Metal Basically.)
6. Pete Townshend (WINDMILL!)
7. Eddie Van Halen (Eruption Baby!)
8. Joe Perry (Sweeeeeeeet Emotiooooooonnnnn.)
9. Angus Young
10. Slash

How 'bout that for a List.

good list, but I think George Harrison is a better songwriter than a guitarist.

Jeff Beck is greater than him.

I think that entire list is bullshit, but than again...this is the rolling stone for you...They're a bunch of whinny ass bitches who hate everything that reflects quality, and pimps anything gaining hype.

When I first looked at the list, I thought it was decent till (though I still think it's bullshit that Jimi's on the top of the list) it hit number 10 and then they mentioned Keith Richard...I knew then whatever they had to say was shit from them out...

And how the fuck does Kurt Cobain...Possibly, one of the most overrated guitarst...of all time...Out rank the likes of Brian May and Carlos Santana?

And Tom Morrello beats out Randy Rhoads? Mr. "let's use every fucking cheap ass effect possible, down tune guitars, and play with a capo" beat out, what had to be the best guitarist of Ozzy osbourne(which says alot btw)?

That's crap.

The only way i can excuse a list like this, was that they made 2 lists...By a guitar magazine editor/expert they called in who made a list of most over rated guitarists, and greatest guitarists...didn't label them correctly, and Rolling stone was all like "hey...I know these names!!!" and put it in the magazine.

10 Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones
11Kirk Hammett of Metallica

Keith Better than kirk? Kieth in the top 10?
List sucks.

12 Kurt Cobain of Nirvana
16 Johnny Ramone of the Ramones
17 Jack White of the White Stripes
24 The Edge of U2
26 Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave

It doesn't matter what you name them...shit is shit.

These guys beat out 74+ other guitarists eh?
Again...list sucks.

66 Vernon Reid of Living Colour
70 Eddie Van Halen

Now here are 2 guys that should be on any top 20 list...Yet they are 60 and 70...I guess actually knowing how to play guitar doesn't mean shit these days in greatest lists.

After all...How does ripping solos with insane amounts of taping and excellent use of note structure, compare to the likes of the 3 note solo's of White, Cobain, or Ramone?

72 Joni Mitchell
85 Randy Rhoads

What a fucking load of complete and utter shit.
Little mis Hippy liberal, better a Guitar god?

What's a memorable Joni Mitchell song?
Big yellow Taxi? That's enough reason to pick her over Randy?

87 Joan Jett
96 Angus Young of AC/DC

That's fucking unexcusable.

And worst of all...

No Vai...And no Wylde...What the hell?
Does somebody dare to have the audacity to tell me that Joni Mitchell, Jack white, Kurt Cobain, Jonny Ramon, Edge, and Morello, are more worthy of spots, then the guys who inspired and continue to inspire guitarists with their unbelievable talent?

Again, I'm not surprise...this is the rolling stone...
But, what I'm questing is, Why don't they mention Tom Delouge of blink 182, I'm sure he would have done great on their list...

Padre Atilio
06-08-2006, 11:21 AM
I agree with Unchainme - his lit is more correct than the one of the fokin' RS magazine ... they've put a list together of best composers or something like that but definitely not of best guitarist... Just a total crap...

knerken
06-08-2006, 11:36 AM
Haha! Kurt Cobain at 12th and Johnny Ramone at 16th! Maybe the two worst guitarists of the century in top 20?!

I love both Ramones and Nirvana, but damn they can't play!

And I love your list Unchainme! :D

All this 'best guitarist crap' is all opinion anyway. It depends how much importance you put on songwriting etc etc vs technical skill. If all you care about is the later EVH wouldnt get a mention till about 50. The top 10 would be full of people like batio and malmsteen. Personally Id rather listen to the beatles than both of them, but but does that make harrison a better guitar player ??? I DONT THINK SO. Anyhow, Who pays attention to rolling stone anyways ?????

You say this, yet you believe Kurt Kobain should be one of the top 5? Kurt Kobain was the worst thing to ever happen to music. Besides, how in the hell can Jackoff White be better than the guitar gods that are Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads? Buncha shit in my opinion

Agreed.

Plus, how can one rate, say, EVH vs. Edge? They approach the instrument and their songwriting processes with different techniques and objectives...

I can see making a list of great guitar players, but what point is there in 'ranking' them? Steve Vai can play rings around Angus Young, technically speaking, but Young has a greater facility coming up with straight-up rockin' tunes - so who is 'better'?

Silly to get upset over how one magazine rates guitar players when the whole endeavor is based on a bullshit premise to begin with.

In a bullshit magazine, to boot.

tydhurst

I think, the definition of a guitar god should really be how important the instrument is to the music, if it was used relevantly and managed to connect on another, baybe spiritual level (hence the "God" part) Most of the guitarists on that list made several generations of kids pick up a guitar to learn and some of those kids made that list as well. Technical skill means very little anymore.

Yes it's probrably a popularity contest, what isn't? Which explains why Eddie "i'm shit to my fans" Van Halen goes down so low on the list. But artistic relavence is also a big factor. The higher people on that list came up with their own definitive style (it may not be good, but it's theirs) and revolutionized the art for their own creative outlet. And that's why the lesser "talented" guitarists deserve just as much credit as the guitar wankers on that list.

Sometimes it's not just Rolling Stone magazine who miss the point.

But i in no way endorse that terrible magazine! First 25 pages are advertisments!!!!

The reason you don't like Jack White is because you're too fucking old and your hearings fucked, dude!

Or it could just be different people, different tastes.

19 or not, you don't have much of a case!

Besides, you're fucking 16 this year!!! And you pretend you have a music taste!
