Winslow Sr.: 'I'm disappointed' in media

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP) - Injured Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. made his first public appearance since his motorcycle crash, and his father used the occasion Friday night to lambaste the media for its coverage of the accident.

The 21-year-old Winslow tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee when he wrecked his high-powered motorcycle May 1 while doing tricks in a secluded parking lot near his home. He will miss all of next season.
Winslow Jr., who missed 14 games as a rookie with a broken right leg, will undergo surgery in the next few weeks.

Shortly after arriving at an auction and roast celebrating the Browns' 1964 NFL championship team, the former first-round pick, who didn't limp, said he didn't want to talk to waiting reporters.

"No," he said politely. "I'm good."

Kellen Winslow Sr., who drove his son to the event and escorted him into the hotel, initially said he would not comment, either. However, a few hours later, the Hall of Famer changed his mind.

The former San Diego Chargers star angrily accused the media of turning the younger Winslow's accident and recovery into a spectacle.

"I'm disappointed in the way you guys have handled it. Twenty-one-year-old people make mistakes," he said. "He made a mistake. You made it a circus. Remember when you were 21? A human being at 21 makes mistakes. He's not a piece of property."

Winslow Sr. was asked if he expected his son to make a full recovery.

"It's a long career," he said. "I played nine years in the National Football League. Technically, I played six years - two strikes, two major injuries and I came out OK. We look at it as a long-term career.

"You guys look at it as a moment in time and you blow it out of proportion. This Jerry Springer mentality of journalism, you guys are better than that. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Presidents make mistakes. Senators make mistakes. Journalists, if you still call yourselves that, make mistakes."

As his father was speaking in the hallway, Kellen Winslow Jr. was inside the ballroom listening to a speech by Hall of Fame Browns running back Jim Brown.

Because Winslow Jr. breached a "dangerous activities" clause in his contract by getting hurt while riding a motorcycle, the Browns may try to recoup some of the bonus money they have paid him.

This shit cracks me up...just cracks me up...

you know...we all made mistakes...but not all of us had millions of dollars and an organization depending on us.

Riding a motorcycle when your contract specifically tells you not to isn't just a mistake...

if you are only 21...and playing in the NFL...you make the choice to follow there rules...if you can't do that...then maybe you shouldn't be playing in the NFL...

He's disappointed in the media...give me a break...

His disappointment is pointed in the wrong direction...

perhaps if it would be pointed in the right direction...we wouldn't be talking about his son...being such an idiot...

So let me get this straight....he's not disappointed in his son's actions, but rather in the way the media handled it?

You do have to love the fucking irony here...

We often blame the media for doing inappropriate things....or interviews...or of lack of class...

You have to REALLY love the Bonds line of thinking now...blame the media...

as though GIVING the media ammo isn't the real problem...

it's fantastic...

All these fucking spoiled athletes and celebrities cry wolf the same way.

It is always someone elses fault; pass the buck even though they sucked for it hook, line and stinker.

How bad can life be when you pull down that type of coin? Do brain cells die as a wallet gets fatter? Where is the disconnect? Why put yourself in a potentially compromising position that can lead to those mega bucks flushing away?

Guys like Kellen Winslow would be minimum wage earners on welfare if it wasn't for athletic ability.

Mezro...memo to the Browns: get all the cash back you can and cut this fucker...memo to Kellen: your big mouth should serve you well as a Wall*Mart greeter...

no.

cutting him and getting nothing in return is what the Butch Davis regime would do. make him stay, but make him accountable for what he did.

it's just sad to see what happened to a Great Franchise. I almost want to compare it to the two Van Halen eras. The 1946-1994 Browns team are a lot like CVH 4 NFL Championship one of the most storied franchise in the NFL. The fans loved 'em followed 'em everywhere. Then came Art Modell moving them to Baltimore and we were left with NOTHING for 5 years. Now We have the 1999-Present Browns kinda like Van Hagar, we have a new stadium it will never be the same as the old one (A sushi bar? High Ticket prices!) The spirit of this franchise will never be the same. Oh well maybe we can getit together and win are selves some games this year and bring back that old Cleveland browns magic and not Be The Laughingstock (Van Hagar) of the NFL.

Damn right. He's still under contract, right? His hands still work so let him be the guy who catches the balls for the QB's when they warmup.
