I totally agree there, even if you don't like Blink's music, gotta admit the kid's got skillz.

Carmine Appice
Ginger Baker
John Bonham
Ian Paice
Bill Bruford
Stewart Copeland

I'd also mention my younger bro, who kicks asses too... :)

Here is a cool news bite:

In February of 2002 I hung out for awhile with Scott Travis, Tim Owens and Glenn Tipton of Judas Priest.

Remember Glenn's solo effort Baptism Of Fire? It had several tracks with Cozy Powell on drums and John Entwistle on bass.

He told me that he has enough recorded material with that rhythm section to release another solo album, and he does plan to release the stuff sometime in the future.

Obviously the Priest reunion delayed it haha...

Moon, Bonham, and Tommy Lee are 3 of my favorites but they're obvious choices.
Phil Collins hasn't been mentioned yet and he's incredible (well he was before he became pop star).

I can't possibly narrow it down to one answer, so I'll break it down by categories.

POWER - John Bonham

TECHNIQUE - Neil Peart

STYLE - Keith Moon

others that rank high on my list:

Stewart Copeland
Charlie Watts
Larry Mullen Jr.
Dave Grohl
Lar$ Ulrich (before he got lazy)
Topper Headon (is he still alive?)

Grohl's pretty good.

Hal Blaine's a great drummer, was a studio cat and played on over 10,000 hits. You've heard his beat on the radio more than anybody else's.

Big Fat Sammy

Bonham

Cause he carried that band. Could play backbeat grooves, and got a great tone.

Scott Churilla.

Nashville Pussy was opening for Horton Heat a few years back, and that's the only time I've seen or heard the dude. I have no idea if this guys name is out there, but he put on a fucking clinic. Jim Heath is a pretty good guitar player, and I have no idea how he managed to take the stage following the drum solo. Mind you, this is a psychobilly act...they usually don't have drum solos.

I asked Jeremy (NP's drummer and no slouch) about it. He said that every single night of the tour, basically everyone just stopped what they were doing to watch that sumbitch's drum solo.

You actually couldn't figure out what he was doing during the majority of it.

Obscure references aside, Bonham's probably my all-time fave.

Finally a thread worth hitting the keys....

On my part I have a lot of favorites...practicing this art myself, it is hard to single out only one drummer....

here is a few to start

1. Danny Carey (TooL) Versatility and oddness
2. Neil Peart ( Rush) Technique
3. Matt Cameron (SoundGarden) new approach (back then of course..)
4. Vinnie Paul (Pantera) Attack
5 Stewart Copeland (Police) fluidity
6 Phil Collins (Genesis) syncopated off-beats
7 Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) precision

But I think the top 1 would be Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden) for his overall mix of every styles and Powerful journey he would take you on....

But Don't get me wrong.... Moon, Bruford and Bonzo were all excellent drummers...but they were pionneers and to my point of view they got outperformed....

Just like younger athletes.... will always break new records.....;)

Ya I know that this Phil Collins Stuff might shock a lot of people,
especially if you picture the candy-ass old goof.... selling out for every dentist waiting rooms across the world.... But back when he was a drummer (hard to believe, but ) he used to be mastering his art.....

If you refer to songs like cinema show, in the cage (medley)

Firstly, tydhurst, Phil Collins IS a good drummer. People don't realise how hood he actually is. You've got to be good to be in a jazz band.

WHo made that list. It looks like RS's guitar list. Dave Grohl #2?????? Does Nirvana own these magazines or something.

By the way, I noticed that none of Dave's drummers have been mentioned. If there was a poll like this for guitarists or bassists then some of Dave's former bandmates would be mentioned immediately.

Why do you think that Dave never worked with a top-tier drummer?

David Lee Roth has no famous Drummers, save for Mr Bissonette. Yo u can;t blame them for not having heard of them.

And... Dave Grohl is easily the best living drummer today, at least in Rock terms anyway. Check out some stuff he's played on if you don't believe me. He's fast, powerful and writes really great drum parts.

It's not just this list that doen't have Bisonette. I don't see anyone else mentioning him either. I own 1 of his albums (Submarine) and am not overwhelmed by his talent as I am by the talents of Eddie, Vai & Sheehan.

As far as Dave Grohl being "easily the best living drummer" I suggest you buy a Dream Theater album.

US music is decadent. Back when I had my first drum lesson, the guy I had was a former college baseball player. I was tardy back then, but look at me today, trying to find rock musicians in the USA, with Bushmen able to convince anybody, anytime, to do anything.

'Bushmen' is the key word, here. NO WAY does the rock scene do anything but slowly collapse, to MP3 sales and fewer concerts, hardly any clubs. NO WAY does the entertainment dollar fight itself and win.

One of you dissed Dave Grohl, and that seems stupid. Goddam Grohl is a crackup, whatever else. And he is not a big ripoff, even though he has been right in the thick, with all the post-Nirvana Seattle fakers.

He rips less or not, and he gets the production in the can, AGAIN. You can put him anywhere in the lineup. His songs are a crackup, Phil Collins sounds TORTURED, so stop playing that crap. Get a good country goof going, if you can't do the crackhead rock well. Crack UP will make a good substitute. Grohl's alright.

Whoa.......Were they huffing paint or smoking crack, when they made that list .....Now but come on.... let's be serious for a second.

Dave Grohl in the number 2 spot before Keith Moon and Neil Peart or Mike Portnoy....you got to be kidding or completely insane.....or both....

Not because Nirvana sold out and that the cheesy drummer formed another maintream band...that this makes him a good drummer...

Being a drummer you idolise people that fuels your learning, that gives you trouble to reproduce, that demonstrates amount of skills, hardwork and determination to be at the level they are....."musically"

Not because their lead singer comitted suicide and that everything revolving around the band becomes instantly collectors item and so on....

If you had tell me that Grohl would be the only style of drumming i could inspire from when i was in my prime, I would have dropped the sticks right then, and picked up Ballet...

Yes you can like Dave grohl no crime in that( well... still).....But please do not measure him up against some of the top beat keepers of all time....

It is very insulting to drummers.......

What do you call a guy who hangs around with musicians?

A drummer!!

Nikki Sixx told that joke on BBC TV once! Well, it was edited between him and, it was either Bruce Dickinson or Rick Wakeman, it was a programme called 'When Rock Ruled The World'.

Apparently the whole drummers aren't as good as the guitarist thing (according to Rick Wakeman) started with the musicians union. Because the musicians union didn't view drummers as musicians.

There you go, learn something new everyday.

How stupid and ignorant does one has to be, to compare one musical instrument to another???
Like apples & oranges...

I've learned piano for 6 years (practicing for at least 1 hour EVERYDAY) and THAT made me a good musician... not the choice of my instrument!

What would be R & R without THE beat?
Try to imagine a concert without drums... ("Hot for Teacher", for exemple)?

Unless you are into easy listening (like Kenny G.), you absolutely NEED drums...

And if those stupid musicians think they can form a complete band without it, well... they should try and see where that will get them...?

In the whole wide world of music and beats... drums rule!!!

Drums, in all their shapes and forms are the oldests instruments on this planet...

And the ones that are complaining about today's drummers are probably those who tried to play with their 4 limbs only to realise they could only use their 2 hands!

As far as Nikki Six...
Wow... great contribution to R & R...!
He should have tried to get better... and I'm not talking about putting on make-up...

Actually, I play keyboards. Very por keyboards, put, nevertheless, I play them.

I just thought I would do some explaining at why drummers are made fun of, because of the musicians union.

here's another great drummer and guess what he studied with GUY NADON, read the article...

Robin DiMaggio

He’s got the attitude. He’s got the talent. And he’s got the grooves. Robin DiMaggio plays with an authority of confidence and capability that ensures a lock-it-in-the-pocket feel that nobody escapes. When he hits, he means it. Born in Paris to a musical family (his father was conductor of the National Orchestra of Paris), by age 2 he was on the drums. A young Robin studied drumming in Montreal with Guy Nadon before years of tutoring in Los Angeles by the legendary Joe Porcaro put him on the road to a successful career. David Bowie, Mariah Carey, Boz Scaggs, Tracy Chapman, Toni Braxton, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dog, Steve Vai, and dozens of other major names have benefited from his worldly sense of rhythm. A mainstay of the Los Angeles session scene, he collaborates with such top players as Vai, Toto’s Steve Porcaro and David Paich, and violinist L. Shankar. His debut solo disc, Blue Planet, reveals a creative side of Robin that’s new to the world, while confirming this young multi-talent as one of today’s hippest players.

I like Alex VH. It's not a fan choice. He's an actual musician. He plays piano, trumpet and guitar, and his drum playing is very musical.

I like his double bass drum playing, but in "Dreams" he plays superior. Seems simple, but I've transcribed all drum track and all fills are singables (sorry, do exist singable?). Or the fill-in on Jamie's cryng... the solo part on Ligth up the Sky... and many more.

Also, I like Cozy Powel.
