Ok, for those that didn't figure...I'm ITALIAN.

What I'd like to know is, do you any of you listen to Frank Sinatra and/or Dean Martin? I do, ALOT...and not just because of my Guineaness, its great music!! You can sing to it, dance to it, bang to it, it is ALL-PURPOSE music!! I so wish that I could have seen these guys or been around in the early 60's when they were Da Shit!!

Anybody else?

I saw Sinatra at the Long Beach Arena in February of 1991. I would not have missed it for the world!

I also saw Tony Bennett at a theater in Kansas City in 1997.

He kicked ass!!!!

Yeah I have been a Sinatra fan since I lived in L.A.
The guy who was my roomate at the time had met Frank once, as his mother had gone to high school with Frank Sinatra's wife. Anyway, my roommate began to educate me in the kickassedness of The Chairman Of The Board, and I have been a fan ever since.

In the realms of bootleg video, there is some film I would LOVE to have....

Back in 1960 they appeared at The Sands casino in Vegas at night while filming Oceans 11 by day. There was a biogrpahy by A & E channel some years ago, where they had a bunch of film footage from those performances, but of course they were just clips, many of which had voiceovers over the top of them.

I would love to have, say one evening's performance on video from start fo finish, unedited, etc.

Obviously there was a lot of film of those shows, or else there would not have been so much material shown on that A & E show.

Oh well.

Maybe someday....

I saw Tony Bennet in AC back in 2000, an excellent show!!

Those 1960 performances you spoke of while they were filming Oceans 11 were a main portion of the 1998 movie "The Rat Pack" with Ray Liotta playing Sinatra.

I agree, those performances would be nice to have seen or see.

I'm only a casual fan of swing stuff.

I like Frank, and certain Bobby Darin songs, the REALLY old stuff.

I do like Harry Connick Jr as well.

"I know you so well
I can tell by the sound of your voice that you're really in love with me
Yes you are, yes you are"

Frank was like the first "rockstar". Great talent

"You'll shout, when it hits you yes, indeed"

Ah, just noticed you're from the UK, excellent.

Post in The Dump, its very British Humour, as opposed to American Humor.

Fine references. I have much more sympathy for Dean Martin, though.

The Rat Pack would perform at The Sands at night and in between the partying and womanising they would make films such as OCEANS 11 during the day. These were men in there 30's and 40's behaving like teenagers, yet they were always turned out impecably in clean crisp white shirts, suits immaculately tailored, hair smoothed back, and smelling of the finest cologne, and all had the faces of angels. Frank Sinatra could attract the women as good as he sung. Ava Gardner who he later married once said,"he may weigh just 120lb, but 80lb of that was pure dick. And cool enough was Frank he even told a naked Marilyn Monroe to get her fat ass out of the room when she tried to interrupt a poker game.

Here is a pic of them onstage during the Summit At The Sands.

Hardrock69
06-14-2005, 11:13 AM
What is cool about the above photo is the following:

They had that table set up at the rear of the stage, and while one or more of them was up front entertaining the audience with some comedy or a song, the others would be back at the table mixing drinks and then drinking them.

Do you ever see such behavior on a stage anywhere these days?

NO!

Not only that, since when has there been a 'group' of entertainers with SUPERSTAR power like that who performed regularly onstage???

Can you imagine what it would cost nowadays to get a group of stars of that magnitude together to do something like that?

Not only that, it was never really 'planned' to begin with...they were just the best of friends who enjoyed hanging out and performing together.

So they performed for the RIGHT REASONS...for love of what they were doing and for the enjoyment of each others' company.

THAT is what it made it so special...

Here is a great webpage dedicated to The RatPack:

And a direct link to the page at that site with a bunch of kewel pix:

Now, THOSE MOTHERFUCKERS KNEW HOW TO PARTY! And they really were best friends. Dean Martin never, ever, followed a script during his tv show back in the day. He is truly one of the best ad libbers ever!
Saw Ann Margret interview once and she said he never rehearsed anything. He would just walk out and wing it and nail it every time.

I have Sinatra, Dino, The Ratpack cd with songs from all of them and a duet or two, also have Nat King Cole. I listen to all regularly. I didn't realize Frank sang the "Married With Children" intro song until I was bout 16 or so. It never clicked. And the Mel Gibson number in "What Women Want" is still cool. I've seen it 25 times and still wait for it when I watch the movie.

The Rat Pack, Steve MQueen, Paul Newman and Clint Eastwood are still epitome of cool.
