Do you believe that Ace Frehley of Kiss is one of the top 10 guitarist ever? Give me your feedback. Plus here's my top 10 list.

1. Edward Van Halen/Ted Nugent - Both have completely different styles, too close to call as to which one's better
2. Les Paul - Godfather
3. Stevie Ray Vaughan - Pure heart and soul
4. Kirk Hammett - Godfather of Speed metal
5. Jimi Hendrix - Changed how we listened and played guitar
6. Randy Rhodes - Genious (way better than Iommi)
7. Jimmy Page - Too many great riffs to even name
8. Eric Clapton - Layla
9. Ace Frehley - Underated
10. David Gilmour - Comfortably Numb is all I gotsta say

I second that emotion.

What the fuck is with Ted Nugent??

Am I missing something? I've been playing guitar for over 20 years, not once have I ever had the urge to emulate or observe ANYTHING that Ted Nugent ever did.

Ace in his prime was AWESOME!! And the proof is on KISS ALIVE 1. He had some great riffs and played some sweet solos. As years went on you could tell that substance abuse was affecting his ability to play. It is a sad state of affairs when you shoot to the top and drugs become more important than the music. On a lighter note, there are not to many guitarists who look really cool playing the guitar. Well Ace Frehley was the coolest and Eddie is a close second. As far as skill with the axe goes, here is my list of Hard Rock players.

1. Edward Van Halen
2.Randy Rhoads
3.Jimi Hendrix
4.Angus Young
5. Jeff Beck
6.Eric Clapton/The Cream era
7. Slash
8. Brian May
9. Joe Satriani
10. Ace Frehley

I know I will get some flack for not including Vai or Malmsteem, but I am not a big fan of the fret demons who played a hundred notes a second.

Joe Perry sucks.

There isn't ONE Joe Perry riff or solo that is memorable.

Ace kicks his shitty ass.

I'm an Ace fan, though I'm not sure if I'd say he was top ten. Eddie, of course, is my number 1.

Nugent is a master of riffs and of solos, Eddie on the other hand is a motherfucking virtuoso that can do anything and everything with a guitar.

Remember my cousin giving me KISS Alive (on vinyl) about a year after it was released. Didn't even play an instrument back then, but hearing the shit Ace did made me want to. Not even just because he looked cool, but because of what I was hearing. Still think the stuff he was doing back then sounds great, even to this day. Has nothing to do with how hard it is to play, or whatever. Same goes for his 1978 solo album. I love the tunes on that one.

Top ten guitarists - for me, has nothing to do with who's 'best', but will name the ten that I've dug the most:

In no particular order

1. Ace Frehley
2. Pete Townshend
3. Eddie Van Halen
4. Yngwie Malmsteen
5. Jimi Hendrix
6. Jeff Beck
7. Jimmy Page
8. Keith Richards
9. Randy Rhoads
10. Chet Atkins

Vinnie Vincent is underated.

He was actually more a better songwriter than lead player.

At least you can say this when you listen to some of the stuff he co-wrote for KISS' 1982 Creatures of the Night.

I have said it before and will say it again...

who you like is not always the best...these threads are more "who I like" threads than who really is best....

Some of the best in no order here...

Al Dimeola
Stanley Jordan
Eddie Van Halen (not currently)
Steve Vai
Yngwie Malmsteen
Jeff Beck
Steve Morse
Phil Keagy

Guys I really dig....

Vivian Campbell (pre Def Leppard days)
Billy Gibbons (very distinctive sound and style)
EVH in CVH
Steve Vai
George Lynch (older stuff)
Watson and Gillis in Night Ranger

I also am not crazy about Jimmy Page as a guitar player (very sloppy), but one hell of a songwriter...

Space Ace and Nugent are NOT in the best category...by a long shot

I just always have to ask myself the question: how many people in these threads REALLY play guitar? I have met so many "let me tell you who the best guitar player is" people and I would say 97% couldn't play ANYTHING that resembles being an accomplished guitar player....

Not trying to be a prick, Doc is a fair guy, but I know some of you know what I'm saying....

nice choices.

Stanley Jordan playing the "Stairway to heaven" solo and the rhythm guitar parts at the same time, must be witnessed to be believed.

I know what you are saying.

I can play a bit of guitar, but I'm actually a drummer. :)

I wouldn't say Nugent is in a Best category, but many people didn't even mention Prince.

He's a really great player, but he's just not on the technical side of say Steve Vai, Joe Satch or EVH (people who have revolutionized the way a guitar is to be played).

Ace was still great on those early KISS records. He had a cool vibe and distinct style and originality. I think that counts just as much as having a rep as a speed demon guitar shredder.
