View Full Version : Out at the plate....

As a huge Jays fan I used to be a ticket subscriber in the

80's. This stopped after the strike.

I was a huge fan of Jesse Barfield who had a wicked arm

from right field. He used to throw out guys at the plate tagging

up from third all the time.

Many other outfielders were also great at getting an assist at the

plate.

My observation is this, It seems today like the tag up from

third to home is almost being conceded by the fielders.

There is rarely a play at the plate anymore.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Is this another example of rich athletes getting lazy

and killing the game?

Baseball has lagged greatly over the years, not like it used to be--all the players worry about 'ME'

lmfao...I do agree with you...in this day and age...it's not so much the arms that people fear...but the collisions...these bums don't want to risk their millions...

Good post guwapo...I was actually thinking about this as well...the other day...not a lot of collisions at the plate...and the few that there are...are preached on ESPN like some kind of miracle...or POY

Makes me remember the days of the Montreal Expos when they had one of your better defensive outfields in Ellis Valentine, Warren Cromartie, and Andre Dawson. They all had the guns.

I used to just lose my mind when the old Street And Smiths use to come out.

POJO_Risin

I remember when Juan Bell (George's little brother or nephew) was supposed to replace Cal Ripken in the early 90's.

I think it was Barfield's kid that was #1.

I got all 3's autographs on a ball during a rain delay at Municpal in 86 or 87...but it was raining...and the pen fucking smeared...but you can still see them...I want to say 1987...

I also got the Crime Dog...and Tony Fernandez...Dave Stieb...and Willie Upshaw...

There was a play at the plate last night in the Sox game...Varitek blocks the plate with only his LEG...the runner (I forget who) goes to slide for home instead of barreling Tek over...Tek's LEG blocks him from tagging home, he misses the plate, Tek walks over and tags him out...Im glad, but from a baseball standpoint, you gotta put a Pete Rose shoulder into the catcher in that instance...

To be accurate, the reason that Jack Wilson tripped over Varitek's leg is because he decided mid-stride to change his slide from a hook-slide to just going in straight and trying to move the leg out of the way...

He's damn lucky he didn't fuck up his knee or leg....

Good defensive play by Varitek though, I'll give him his props...

Of course, no mention of the absolutely blown call by the 2nd base umpire, costing the Bucs at least one run in the 8th...

Another series with the big boys, another blown call by the umps, another loss...

But I'm SURE that it's only a coincidence....

Dude...do you ever bitch about blown calls?

Next thing you know...I'm going to have to hear about how the Sox and the Yankees get a wider strike zone...lmfao...

No, unless Greg Maddox gets traded to the Yankees....

But they sure as hell get EVERY call....

Finally got a win tonight though in Baaaston, 2-0.....

Just to show you it's not just me....

From Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy: "The Pirates seem to get no help from the umpires -- like rookie Greg Kite trying to draw a charge from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar -- but they've played with pride and grit."

"like rookie Greg Kite trying to draw a charge from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar..."

Bro...you are quoting a guy who used THAT analogy...

and the Post Gazette...lmfao...

Shitty calls happen ever day...

The quote was in the Post-Gazette, but the columnist is from the Boston Globe....

And yes, shitty calls do happen every day, just more to some teams than others....
