the only time ive seen beck play was in a music video with SRV and he was quite good...but not the best so i wouldnt have an opinion about him

i think tho that page is the best songwriter out of the three and clapton is BY FAR the best player out of all the three

Who's to say who's the best.

You can only say who's your favorite.

Page, in terms of composition....least back when he was in Led Zep.

Beck, in terms of overall technique.

Clapton.........nope. Nothing there for me. Never was. Just 'cuz EVH says he loved Clapton doesn't mean anything to me. Some of the stuff he did with Cream live back in the day was decent, but NONE of it was anything that would make me say 'Clapton is God' (methinks EC spray-painted that himself)

I like Page's total body of work best of the group, and voted so.

Jeff Beck is the best pure player of the group, hands down. If you don't know him, go pick up the CD Guitar Shop, and go in either direction from there.

Clapton has failed to impress me since the Layla record (a must have, btw). Especially live. Very sterile and cold. I like feeling, thus my slant towards Page.

Well Eric and Jimmy say Jeff is the best of three. My favorite is Page.

I like things about each one of those guys. Like Clapton or not, he did give us the rock staple of a Les Paul into a Marshall, and his early playing was pretty smoking.

Beck has the best dexterity of the group, and can play some whacked out shit, but he seems to lack the focus of Page or Clapton. Beck probably cares more about his cars than his guitars.

Jimmy is hands down the best songwriter and riff writer of the three. Jimmy is one of those players that has times when he is "on" and "off." Catch him when he's on, and very few guitarists can compete with him in terms of sheer power, catch him when he's off and it might be close to a train wreck.

Bottom line....I can't imagine what rock guitar might be like if it had not been for the Big Three. It is hard not to marvel at the contributions each made to the art of rock guitar. These guys charted new ground and techniques, and that is just something that doesn't happen every day. My hat off to 'em.

JIMMY PAGE is like WAGNER with a Les Paul & Marshall stack.

Agree with all of it, save for the Clapton comments. He's always been way overblown in proportion to his talent. For some reason, he gets so much fucking reverence, and............I'm just not hearing it. Even in the context of the 1960s/1970s pentantonic blues overkill, STILL can't say he was doing anything exceptional. Love ya, Brownsound, you're one of my fave posters here.........but think you missed the mark here, IMO.

I'm just saying.

Agreed. Never understood why people look at musicians like they're athletes or something.

Who's the 'better' guitarist/drummer/bassist/etc........what set of variables do you use to judge that?

Pretty much saying one musician is 'better' than someone else is just saying you prefer one over the other, and nothing more.

Except, of course, in the case of Roth being better than Hagar (hee hee)

How many fucking times has this thread been started bro? LMFAO.........anyway I agree about Clapton.........bores me to tears, I never "got it" I guess. Have to go with Page, for his songwriting, producing, AND playing.

So what if it's been talked aobut before. Nobody objects when it's a "Sammy is a twat" thread, and that's been discussed countless times.

The newbies don't know it's been discussed before and wern;t here whn it was, so let them have a discussion aobut it. you don;t have to answer if you don;t want to.

Just say "NO" to Clapton.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again...when he's in the confines of a band situation he turns it on, but his "solo" stuff...its pure crap. I'd rather listen to the REAL bluesmen than his rehashes of the songs that they didn't get the jack for.

Too bad he didn't get on his on chopper instead of offering the seat to SRV! We'd still have him around today and we'd add his name to the poll instead of 1991 "Parent of the Year" award winner Clapton!!!

I voted for Jeff Beck, though he's never recorded anything as worthy as Jimmy Page has with the Mighty Zep.
Jeff is an incredible guitar player, a true magician, but not really a songwriter, which Jimmy is for eternity.
Choosing one between them is like answering the question: "Do you prefer your father or your mother", just the same as "Women and children first" or "Fair Warning"? Or "Running with the devil" or "Panama", etc...:D

Clapton deserves bashing for recording bull in the 80s and 90s, but IMO he can't be definitively condemned.
It's just a detail in his career, but I always remember the solo he took on "Little red rooster" on stage with the Stones in NY in Dec. 1989 (the version that is featured on "Flashpoint"), man, that touch of his is extraordinary.

I read an interview that both Page and Beck gave 5 or 6 years ago to some magazine I must have kept somewhere. They were asked, among many other questions, who was the best guitarist who came after them in rock history. Jimmy gave several names which I forgot, just because Jeff talked about only one... Guess who (initials: E V H)!:D

Beck had a very unique sound, however, I have to go with Jimmy Page, hands down. He changed the sound and meaning of guitar forever. His impact will never cease influence.
