MEXICO CITY (AP) -- WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko was ordered to fight the winner of the Hasim Rahman-Monte Barrett bout by the organization on Friday.
Rahman, a former champion, and Barrett will fight Aug. 13 in Chicago. WBC president Jose Sulaiman said Klitschko must then meet the winner of that bout.
Klitschko was considering a voluntary defense in September, and the WBC said Friday it would allow such a bout only with the approval of Rahman and Barrett. Regardless, Klitschko must face either Rahman or Barrett after that in a mandatory defense.
If Klitschko does not get approval to fight in September, the WBC said the winner of Rahman-Barrett must be medically approved to meet Klitschko from six to eight weeks after Aug. 13.
