Dream On- Aerosmith (God I Hate The Fact Buick uses this in their commercials, Dreaming on about a Shitty car get real, This is THE BEST POWER BALLAD EVER!)

Brigin' On The Heartbreak- Def Lep (Def Lep first hit on MTV)

Don't Stop Believin'- Journey (The inspiration for every Van Hagar Power Ballad, I Still like Journey despite thi, and I still like this song.)

Stairway To Heaven- Led Zep (The orignal Power Ballad.)

One- Metallica (Has To Be the Most Depressing Power Ballad Ever, One Of Metallica's Beast songs.)

Home Sweet Home- Motley Crue (I love The Video,

Every Rose Has It Thorn- Poison (Sorry I kind Of like Poison)

18 and Life- Skid Row (Sebastian Bach has An Amazing Voice)

Behind Blue Eyes- The Who (The Limp Bizkit Version Sucks Ass.)

One- U2 (Gotta Love U2 I would put them on the level of The Rolling Stones , I mean think about it out of all the new wave bands they are probably the only ones producing hits, much like the Stones.)

These are some of my Favorites

No question, this song has layers, crunching guitars, sweeping strings and Ian Astbury powering above it all. Magik!!!

Why, oh why do parents feed paint chips to children?

Its a desperation point a band hits when they think they need a breather during a concert and nothing more.

Bullshit?

It's called airplay.

It's called publishing

It's called royalties

the definition of a power ballad has always kind of confused me

a ballad is a slow, simple, romantic song

so is a power ballad just a ballad with more guitar?

superdave
07-24-2005, 08:06 PM
Dance The Night Away is NOT a fucking power ballad--99 percent of power ballads bite the big one--and why is it that most bands feel obligated to put at least one (or more) per CD (Aerosmith)??

thome
07-24-2005, 08:14 PM
A power ballad is a real or so so good or great song purposefully

streched in length time (with filler) not substance in order to garner

more listening power and air time power ballads in thier condensed

version are probably great tunes.

Chick song....with cheesey "hair metal" guitars.

"DEAD OR ALIVE"

"HOME SWEET HOME"

"FLY TO THE ANGELS"

These are power ballads........

LED ZEPPELIN, ORIGINAL VAN HALEN.....these bands wrote NO power ballads........

Power ballads are often misunderstood. For example, Aerosmith's "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" is NOT a Power Ballad, its just a ballad, "Wind of Change" is not a power ballad, its just a ballad.

There is a TV station in the UK called Magic, and every couple of weeks it will have "Power Ballads Week" and they play people like Westlife (boyband) and Bionnie Tyler. They domn't actually play power ballads, just ballads.

Now, as for REAL Power Ballads, I'm not a big fan of them. There are very few that I actually like.

belted it out.. Put some guts into the vocals..

"I Remember You"-Skid Row
"I Wish It Would Rain"-Phil Collins with Eric Clapton
"House Of Pain"-Fasterpussy Cat-Not your typical "She left me, I want her back" song.

Knew that was Slowhand on the first note weeks before I ever saw the video. Still love that song. Though I'm not huge fan and realize the slow songs he has written over the years are just ballads I still believe a case can be made for the Collins song I mentioned above. I guess "You're No Son Of Mine" could possibly be one. Or maybe its just my own personal connection with that one that makes me think so.

The song was written by Dianne Warren, the bitch who writes for boybands. ANYTHING she writes can not be considered "Power" anything. Plus, the song isn't powerful in the least, anyone could do that song, thats the thing about a power ballad, if you can see a boyband doing it, it isn't a power ballad.

Actually I think The Scorpions began doing power ballads then others, bands like Bon Jovi, took the concept and perverted it,

1979 Holiday -Ok It's not 100% Power Ballad but it’s a good first attempt

1982 No One Like You – Ok we’re getting there

1984 Still Loving You – Yeah there it is a Power Ballad

Never considered Dance The Night Away a power ballad.

Freebird is a great song, but I've just heard it too many times.

November Rain was so-so.

Goodbye To Romance was decent. Not really one of my faves of Blizzard.

Don't Go Away Mad...yeah, whatever. Next.

Home Sweet Home. This song, more than a lot of others, seems to be the template for the 1980s hair metal power ballad explosion, with most of these tunes ending up on the various MONSTER BALLADS cds. I remember when this came out, maybe a year or so after me and my buds saw the Crue open up for Ozzy on the Bark At The Moon tour, and basically blew Oz off the stage. Crue were shit-hot then, out there promoting the Shout At The Devil album.

Theater of Pain was the end of my use for that band, and this song was a big part of it. Just a cloying, forced sentimentality calculated to sell records to 13 year old girls. Opened the door for a lot of other bands with a minimal amount of talent to go and do the same thing (Fuck, Bon Jovi's made a CAREER off this shit). Someone once said that Stairway To Heaven was really the first power ballad, but I couldn't put that track in the same room with shit like Home Swet Home and the drek that followed.

The Scorps were the best at this one.
From the 70's up to now.
Klaus has a incredible voice with power.
Rudolf Schenker and Mattius Jabs were always very under rated.
