Bus bomber phoned attackers on Tube
25 August 2005

The July 7 bus bomber frantically phoned his fellow suicide attackers only minutes after they exploded their devices on three London Tube trains, it has emerged.

Hasib Hussain, 18, tried to call his accomplices around 9am, but was met with silence because they had already killed themselves and dozens of innocent people in a near simultaneous attack at 8.50am.

It is thought that Hussain had intended to set off his rucksack bomb at the same time on a Northern Line train as the others travelled east, west and south.

However, the service was suspended that morning and so he headed back above ground where he tried to call the others using a mobile phone.

The desperate calls were made with "increasing panic", according to sources quoted in London's Evening Standard.

A short time later, at 9.47am, Hussain detonated his device on a Number 30 bus at Tavistock Square. On the day of the bombings, witnesses on the bus had described seeing an agitated man rummaging around in his rucksack.

Security sources have confirmed that Hussain had attempted to call at least one of his three accomplices - Mohammad Sidique Khan, Shehzad Tanweer and Germaine Lindsay - before his bomb went off.

The four had travelled from Luton to King's Cross station that morning.

It was also claimed that the calls proved the July 7 attackers had not originally intended to target the bus and that there was no al Qaida "mastermind" or wider support network, otherwise the confused terrorist would have phoned them for help.

However, sources suggested the calls did not necessarily prove this as Hussain may not have known the identity of the planners, or how to contact them.
