Iron Maiden "Death on the road"

Picked this up on Tuesday.

Maiden often get a hard time about the amount of live albums they`ve released but personally I can`t get enough.

This gig was recorded in Dortmund, Germany on the 2003 "Death on the road" (natch) tour.

So what`s the difference between this and 2002`s "Rock in Rio"?

Not much, actually.

I prefer the set list better although this double CD clocks in about twenty minutes shorter than "Rock in Rio".

I also like the mix a lot more with the guitars being a lot clearer.

You can tell just from listening that the show is far more theatrical, from the goofy-but-great "Dance of death" through the war poetry recital by Bruce Dickinson before "Paschendale" to the artificial drama of "Fear of the dark".

"Lord of the flies" benefits from Bruce`s vocals (as did "Sign of the cross" on "Rock in Rio") and shows that "The X factor" isn`t the big dud that everyone says it is.

CD 1 is by far the most interseting of the two, as CD 2 is the usual romp through the songs we`ve all got at least five live versions of ("Fear of the dark", "Iron Maiden", "Number of the beast" etc.).

Unfortunetly no selections from "Powerslave" or "Somewhere in time".

This show will also be released mid-October on double DVD with the same title and including various documentaries, one of which is a fly-on-the-wall "Making of "Dance of death"".

Can`t wait.

Wow...no Powerslave tracks? That was one of their finest albums!

Oh well....when they tour to support their next "Early Years" DVD, I am sure they will record one of the shows and release it on DVD with the entire Powerslave album played live in it's entirety or something like that.

I was going to pick this up, but wanted to get the DVD instead.

But I liked the songs from Dance of Death far more than Brave new World, so I just might pick this one up.

I like the fact that Maiden doesn't rely on their old stuff so much as they like to play new songs as well.

I wish the set list on the CD was longer though, like Rock in Rio.

Could have at least 3 more songs there.

Just picked up Maiden's Part 1: The Early Days on DVD.

Haven't gotten all the way through it yet, but killer so far.

In case anyone hasn't picked it up yet, Iknow I'm a little late getting it.

Dunno.

No details have been announced yet.

With the "Death on the road" DVD in October and a new album projected for the end of 2006, I would guess it might be around Spring next year.

Damn...I've been meaning to pick up the Early years and have not yet.

How do you like the vocals on DOTR?
I have read they are not the greatest...although the sound quality is supposed to be awesome.

One thing I love about Maiden, because they plug a lot of new material on tour, they always make huge changes to the setlist, so you never get 2 tours the same.

I heard that too but I don`t think there`s anything wrong with them.

I don`t think I`ve ever heard Bruce sing the chorus to "Run to the hills" better than he does here.

His singing is nowhere near as strained as it sounds on "Live after death" and noone ever complains about his performance on that.

The more I listen to "Death on the road", the more I like it.

The whole thing is pretty solid.
