Swamp ash for me. I think it has a nicer tone and resonance than alder or poplar. Basswood sounds great but it's soft cheap wood. You can't beat a good piece of ash!

What about Mahogany?

Mahogany is great on Gibson type guitars with a glued neck joint. Sure. I never liked it on bolt on neck guitars. To be honest, put a good humbucker on a Strat with a good ash body and you are getting some thick tone.
