Despite statements to the contrary by head coach Mike Martz, the Rams recent signing of quarterback Chris Chandler likely means that the team will release quarterback Kurt Warner after June 1. St. Louis
Post-Dispatch columnist Bernie Miklasz sees only two developments that could keep Warner on the team next season. First, if another team makes an offer for restricted free agent Marc Bulger that the Rams do not match. Second, if the Rams fail to select a quarterback during the April 24-25 NFL draft. By waiting until after June 1, the Rams can spread out Warner's salary cap hit.

It doesn't make much sense for the Rams to have two such veteran quarterbacks behind Bulger heading into 2004, and it certainly doesn't fit Martz's profile. Martz moved up through the ranks as a quarterbacks' coach, and we get the sense that he'd always prefer to have a young prospect brewing as a third-stringer. The Rams probably won't draft a quarterback in the first round of the upcoming draft, but they'll certainly look at passers after that.
