My Aunt had something similar happen to her back in the 70s. She was on a vacation, and drove into some small town.
What was strange was that the town and all of it's inhabitants looked like they were right out of the 1940s. All the cars were from the 40s, everybody dressed as if they were in the 1940s, and when my Aunt got out at a diner to ask directions, she said everyone looked at her as if she was from outer space....she got really frightened by the Twilight Zone experience she was having and got the hell out of there.
