DANIEL CRAIG!

Personally I would have liked to see Pierce Brosnan do one more or have Hugh Jackman in the role.

The name sounds familiar, however, don't know of any movies he's been in.

Obviously he's not as well known as Jackman or even Jude Law.

Roger Moore was lame.

Early Sean Connery was the shit.

This is literally the longest running franchise in movie history.

First Bond novel in visual form was broadcast on American TV in 1954.It was a television show based on Casino Royal, starring Barry Nelson.

And of course Dr. No arrived in 1963...making the motion picture franchise about 43 years old.

Wikipedia has the latest dirt:

The 21st official film, Casino Royale, is in pre-production and is slated for a 2006 release. A new actor is expected to replace Brosnan for the film and is expected to be announced on Friday October 14, 2005 during a news conference in London [1]. That actor is widely expected to be Daniel Craig.

Daniel Craig should be good. Rent the movie Layer Cake. It is killer and he is the lead role. Also, you get to Sienna Miller naked... Nice bonus...

Sucks to see Brosnan go, he's second only to Connery in the Bond role. All I can say is that without Ewan McGregor, I'm no longer interested.

Daniel Craig takes on 007 mantle

Meet the new Bond
Actor Daniel Craig has been confirmed as the new James Bond.
The English star of gangster film Layer Cake, who arrived at a press conference in London by speedboat, will play a tougher, grittier and darker 007.

"It's a huge challenge. Life is about challenges and this is one of the big ones as an actor," said Craig, 37, who will be the sixth James Bond.

He joked he "had a couple of Martinis" when he got the role. Casino Royale is due to start filming in January.

"We've got an incredible script and that's my first line of attack," he said. "Once I'd read that, I realised that I didn't have a choice. I had to go for it."

Daniel Craig arrived at the James Bond press conference by boat
He admitted taking the role was a big responsibility but added: "I've just got to step up to the plate and deal with it."

Bond was "a huge iconic figure in movie history and these things don't come along very often", he said.

Director Martin Campbell said the 21st Bond film would be "definitely darker, more character, less gadgets".

Craig told reporters: "Together with Martin, I want to make the best film we can, the most entertaining film we can."

The actor said he was not looking to redefine the role, but added: "It's a question of taking it somewhere maybe where it's never gone before."

Craig said he had received encouragement from predecessor Pierce Brosnan and had tried to think of it "like any other job".

He also admitted there was a danger of being "trapped" by being stereotyped in the role.
But he said: "I'm not allowing myself to think in that way. I'm thinking about the agenda ahead and the agenda ahead is to make the best movie we can."

Producer Michael G Wilson said the film-makers considered more than 200 actors from around the world over two years before settling on Craig.

Neither Q nor Moneypenny will appear, Mr Wilson added, but M will return. However, it was not confirmed whether Dame Judi Dench will play the spy chief.

Producers are now setting their sights on finding a female star to fill what Mr Campbell said would be the "best Bond girl part" ever.

Casino Royale will be an adaptation of author Ian Fleming's first James Bond novel, in which the spy was introduced as a more youthful and cold character than he has been portrayed on film.

"I certainly think it will be a little bit darker - that's not to say it won't have its sense of humour, of course it will have that," Mr Campbell said.

Mr Wilson also revealed work had already started on the 22nd James Bond film, which would be Craig's second as 007.

The actor's first major role was in the BBC Two drama Our Friends in the North in 1996 and he rose to prominence in Hollywood alongside Tom Hanks in Road To Perdition in 2002.

He has since played poet Ted Hughes opposite Gwyneth Paltrow in Sylvia and headlined Layer Cake, which co-starred Sienna Miller.

He is also to appear in Steven Spielberg's new drama Munich, about the Olympic massacre of 1972.

Craig will follow in the footsteps of previous Bond stars Pierce Brosnan, Sir Sean Connery, Sir Roger Moore, George Lazenby and Timothy Dalton.

Daniel Craig: Our Friend in MI6

The search for a new 007 to fill the tuxedo vacated by Pierce Brosnan is over - with little known actor Daniel Craig chosen by producers. But just who is the new face of James Bond?
Daniel Craig, according to the Washington Post, has been "around for a few years, waiting to happen".

But now that he is the world's most famous spy one can say with some certainty that Daniel Craig has indeed "happened".

He is not a complete unknown, but his roles in films such as Layer Cake - in which he played the enigmatic XXXX - have been noticed more by critics than by audiences.

But rumours of a relationship with current tabloid favourite Sienna Miller have at least brought him to the attention of the readers of some newspapers.

Depicted as the white knight come to rescue Miller after her break-up with fellow actor Jude Law - once a 007 contender himself - it is clear the Bond producers have a keen eye on populist feeling and potential marketing.

But what has won Craig the role as Britain's secret agent of agents?

Four years ago James Bond casting director Debbie McWilliams - who is working on the new film Casino Royale - said in an interview Bond had to be "devastatingly handsome, incredibly fit and available".

To many Craig would tick all those boxes and more, yet other observers have picked up on the actor's blond hair.

Bond has been portrayed by dark-haired actors for the last 40 years and was described as having "dark hair" by Fleming himself.

Bond purists may balk at the choice but it is worth noting that Fleming's description of the spy also included a three-inch, vertical scar on his left cheek.

McWilliams also said the role would go to someone "less well known" than actor Russell Crowe, who was also reportedly once in the mix.

Craig again ticks all the boxes; his most high-profile role to date was in the first Tomb Raider film, alongside Angelina Jolie.

Raider was a moderate success, as was his role as poet Ted Hughes in the biopic Sylvia, and as the mysterious XXXX in Layer Cake he garnered good reviews for his performance.

Importantly, while he is not a household name in the US, critics warmed to his acting talent in the gritty British thriller.

Born in Chester, north-west England, in 1968, he is four years younger than Pierce Brosnan was when he agreed to become Bond.

He left school at 16 and joined the National Youth Theatre and from there won a place at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Dance.

Like many British actors, his first professional screen work was on television with small one-off roles in series such as Boon, Heartbeat and Drop the Dead Donkey.

His breakthrough role was as Geordie Peacock in the nine-part TV series Our Friends in the North, playing a hard man with a troubled past.

But since the turn of the century he has mainly focused on film with standout roles in Sylvia, Enduring Love and Road to Perdition.

He has recently finished filming with Steven Spielberg on his film Munich, about the aftermath of the terrorist attacks at the 1972 Olympics.

And his latest role is as real-life killer Perry Smith, who was immortalised in Truman Capote's book In Cold Blood.

Craig's transition from essentially a character actor to the head of a global franchise will be an interesting one to follow.

The actor himself is aware of the challenges.

"It's a big machine and it makes a lot of money," he has said in a recent interview.

He has also said, before the announcement was made, that he would want to bring more "emotional depth to the character".

"I'd like to see it go back to the books. I think they (the films) need to be dirtier."

So what kind of Bond will Craig make?

The Washington Post film critic described Craig as "the next Steve McQueen".

"He has McQueen's way of dominating without bullying. He's also handsome in a rugged way, thin and strong," wrote journalist Stephen Hunter.

Steve McQueen as James Bond? Now that's casting.

It really sounds like the stuff they said about Timothy Dalton before his run...

Darker character...and he was...wasn't bad if you ask me...

but Dalton got panned...mainly because it was supposed to goto Brosnan...but Remington Steele wouldn't let him out of his contract...and then went under that same year...

Personally I always considered Dalton to be the most "realistic" Bond. A bit like CVH - cut off in his prime. He was the last Bond who was allowed to smoke. He brought a bit of an edge to the role that was lost entirely because of Roger Moore's excessive use of his eyebrows and double entendres. Hopefully they will get back to basics with the new movie - more Bond less gadgets.

Daniel Craig is a good actor, good luck to him but they need to improve the scripts for the Bond Movies. I really enjoyed watching the Born Identity and the Born Supremacy with Matt Damon. I would have liked to see Tarantino directing one of the Bond Movies.
My favourite Bond actor is Sean Connery, second favourite is Pierce Brosnan and in third place Roger Moore.
