MAR DEL PLATA, Argentina (Reuters) - President George W. Bush said on Friday he would not comment on the status at the White House of deputy chief of staff Karl Rove until an investigation into his role in the leak of a CIA agent's name was completed.
Bush, taking questions from reporters on the fringes of the Summit of the Americas in Argentina, called the CIA leak probe a "very serious investigation," a week after a vice presidential aide, Lewis Libby, was indicted in the case.
"The investigation on Karl as you know is not completed," Bush said. "Therefore I will not comment about him and/or the investigation."
Lawyers involved in the case said Rove remained under investigation and may still be charged.
Democrats have called on Bush to fire Rove, and Republican Sen. Trent Lott of Mississippi has questioned whether Rove should retain his policy-making role at the White House. The White House has rebuffed calls for a staff overhaul.
"I understand the anxiety and angst by the press corps to talk about this. On the other hand it's a serious investigation and we take it seriously, and we're cooperating to the extent that the special prosecutor wants us to cooperate," Bush said.
