Well, it's hard to pick, but some current favourite solos that come to mind are: Drop Dead Legs, Sinner's Swing, Push Comes to Shove, and I'll Wait.

I'll Wait? Nah....Older shit was better. Tuned downed for the best solos. Im going with "Outta Love Again", "Bottoms Up" "Push Comes to Shove" and "So this is Love?"

"Push Comes to Shove"
Easily the most honest solo Eddie ever played.

Ha, knew I'd get some remarks with that one.

Give it a listen. It's some of Ed's tastiest string-squeezing melodic blues playing. Very soulful, meaty stuff.

Well structured, too, and moody.

I get the whole first few bars of that solo in my head all the time. Fucking love it.

well, as far as some "opinions" here go...and as far as the last baby steps of the mighty =VH= go...I think the most memorable and classic solo must be the one in "why can't this be love" with sammy screeching over it...get back to the keyboard, edwina...

judgement day

5150 and Summer Nights were two of the best tracks on that album, so obviously they must have been from the half of the record that was written when Dave was in the band.

And I will have to admit that Judgment Day is probably the best piece of music Van Hagar ever came up with. With a real singer and a decent set of lyrics, it could have been a VH classic.

Just mentioning these cause they haven't been mentioned yet:

One Foot Out the Door (waaay over the top)
Loss of Control (different side of Ed)
Hang Em High (fuckin cool!)

Fuck, I could list way more, but I don't wanna hog.

YES! OFOTD is a smoking goddamn outro of a solo, a very underrated EVH wail fest.

I'd forgotten about HEH's solo. I love that shit, especially the main hooky, melodic muted riff it keeps going back to. FUCK YEAH.

The Hang Em High solo is freakin amazing. You see the '82 Largo footage of him playin it all up close and personal? I saw that and rewound it 20 times probably. Untouchable!

Ice Cream Man kicks absolute ass (as do most early VH solos), but I don't know. There's just something about the "So this is Love" solo that hits me. I think the opening riff has perfect phrasing and feel (something missing from all solos, 5150 on).

Oh, wait a minute, the solo from "Feel your love tonight" is fucking awesome too. Same type of "feel" to it. I tried like hell to play it, but can't get Eddie's phrasing quite right on this one (I suppose that's why I'm the AG, and not a rock star...)

I don't know actually, I suppose it also depends on my mood when listening. All the early shit is just fucking full of great, great guitar work. Inspirational shit, even to non-guitarists. Does anyone actually get that from the VanHagar stuff? I know I don't. The guitar work is just lacking IMHO in VanHagar.

Yes, the opening of that solo is one of Ed's finest moments. Such a sassy hook. I love it.

As I've said, I walk around with that solo intro playing in my head half the day lately. It's goddamn perfect.

Shit, I had the vid on my hard drive, but its gone now. Totally sucks cause you gotta see it man. You know how from time to time you see something that reaffirms why you loved the band in the first place? This vid was one of those times for me. The entire band is killin.

Can someone please put this up?

I love all Ed's solos especially: "Little Dreamer" and "I'm the One"

Every note on "Fair Warning" is mind-blowing.

BTW "So this Is love" was a combination of Ed's solos; he mixed them together to form one solo apparently.

The solo from "Beat It".

(This thread IS about the best EVH solo, remember?)

Good point! that is a masterpiece and a half of a guitar solo and often ignored by VH fans.

BTW the rythm guitar is not Ed it's his friend Steve Lukather.

oh yeah, as i've been reading this thread i've been putting the cd's on
and listening....

but i have no van hagar. oh well.

yep, i always liked so this is love and push comes to shove,

ice cream man, hot for teacher.

little dreamer is an underrated song!

one that no-one's mentioned,

the whole second half of house of pain goes through 3 distinct solo's.

i remember this is why i play guitar, it still makes my hair stand up!

and that last bit with the bluesy bent doublestops, and dave wit da 'aah aah'

fuckin superb way to end an album.

then there was mr. vai!

pardo
04-26-2004, 08:53 AM
Fuck man, the solo and outro for House of Pain is my favorite ending to an album ever! Awesome groove and the whole band just sounds elated to be playing! What sucks is it kinda upped the excitement for the next album. Sorta like "Growth" from the WACF. Except exponentially cooler!
