Rumsfeld: No lions were used on detainees
WASHINGTON — US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld dismissed a report yesterday that US troops used lions on two Iraq detainees arrested in 2003.
.
"It seems quite far-fetched," Mr Rumsfeld told reporters but he added that every allegation is investigated.
.
Mr Rumsfeld also said that terrorist are trained to lie about their treatment while in custody. "They do it consistently and it always works," he said.
.
The Washington Post reported an account by two Iraqis who said they were put in a cage with lions because they could not say where former President Saddam Hussein was hiding or reveal the location of weapons of mass destruction. They said they were also subjected to mock firing squad executions and beatings.
.
Sherzad Khalid, 35, and Thahe Sabber, 37, said the abuse took place during a period of several months at US facilities in Iraq, including Camp Bucca and Abu Ghraib.
.
Khalid and Sabber are plaintiffs in a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and Human Rights First against Mr Rumsfeld, the paper reported. — DPA
