York: Humpty Dumpty continues freefall in polls

Congressman Tom DeLay's lawyers were successful in removing a Democratic judge who was set to hear his case on the grounds that his politics would prevent Tom from getting a fair trial. His case is now before a Republican judge, and Mr. DeLay is confident that he will be back at his post as majority leader of the House soon.

Cleared of all charges? Probably, because the new judge is considering Tom's request to "throw the case out." Republican justice in Texas is like the witch in "The Wizard of Oz" when she said, "I'm melting, I'm melting," and then disappeared altogether.

But wait! Jack Abramoff, a powerful Republican lobbyist and close associate of Mr. DeLay and other neo-conservatives in the House, is being prosecuted for bilking Native Americans out of millions of dollars: a modern day version of stealing Manhattan for a few strings of beads.

The Senate is also holding hearings on Mr. Abramoff's furtive financial activities. The question is: what did he do with the money?

Sen. Bill Frist of Moral Majority fame is being investigated for selling his stock in what appears to be a family owned health company, along with the usual suspects (insiders) who were also selling their stock before the HCA stock elevator plunged to the basement.

Sen. Frist, in all fairness, claims that the unloading of his shares was to dispel any appearance of a conflict of interest. Of course, saving money in the transaction was an "unforeseen" bonus. Will Sen. Frist have an equal opportunity for jail time that Martha Stewart had?

Scooter Libby, chief cook and bottle washer for Vice President Cheney, was indicted for perjury and giving false information in his testimony. He may not be off the hook despite the intervention of Bob Woodward, the quintessential reporter of the Nixon era, who recently upstaged everyone by claiming that someone casually mentioned Valerie Plame and her status at the CIA two years before Libby got into the act of outing Ms. Plame.

Of course, Woodward's source is also confidential. Having been doublecrossed by the first Deep Throat, who outed himself, Bob is now working on Deep Throat number two. He claims that this new Deep Throat is a member or past member of the administration. Apparently, everyone is dashing forward to rat out Valerie Plame. Haven't any of these people heard of the Tangled Web Theory?

Deputy White House Chief of Staff Karl Rove, who is smarter than all the rest, suddenly "remembered" at the last minute that he had proof of his innocence in outing Valerie Plame. No wrongdoing here, he told the prosecutor.

Rove claims that Ms. Plame's covert status never crossed his ruby lips to anyone else. However, Mr. Rove remains a person of interest in the ongoing investigation, but continues his control over the absolute power that corrupts this administration.

Donald Rumsfeld is still secretary of defense and a hawk without credentials. Even though the cost of the occupation of Iraq is two billion dollars a week, Mr. Rumsfeld conducted the war with what he thought the troops should have, not what they actually needed.

He is constantly telling Americans that the Iraqi army will soon be able to manage its own defense against the insurgency. Then "perhaps" some troops can come home if "conditions" on the ground are "right."

Unless Donald intends to leave behind the sophisticated American military equipment for the Iraqis' use, no one is going anywhere. Bringing home some troops leaves a lesser force at the mercy of the insurgency, who are never going to quit. Never. It's a Catch 22 situation.

In any event, Mr. Rumsfeld should be fired for his performance, or lack thereof. Maybe he could join former FEMA Director Michael Brown in his new consulting business.

Meanwhile, Humpty Dumpty continues his freefall in the polls.
