Dodge Challenger concept: 1970 all over
Classic muscle car look, with lines smoothed and gaps filled, is brought back with two-door concept.

January 4, 2006; Posted: 11:04 a.m. EST (1604 GMT)

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - With an appearance that draws heavily from the classic muscle cars of the late 1960s and early '70s, the Dodge Challenger, premiering in concept car form at next week's Detroit Auto Show, should satisfy those who thought the 4-door Dodge Charger just didn't have the right stuff.

This time around, the number of doors stays true to the original spirit. Just two.

"The people who were complaining about the Charger, if they complain about the Challenger there's something wrong with them," said David Zatz who runs the Web site Allpar.com, a site about Chrysler Group products.

The Dodge Charger was ripped by some because it was a four-door sedan, a nod to practicality seen as out-of-place in a car that carried the name of one of the most famous muscle car lines. As soon as images of the Charger were released to the public, letters of complaint started coming into DaimlerChrysler's Chrysler Group headquarters in Detroit.

In June 2005, a report in the industry newspaper Automotive News said that Chrysler was working on a two-door car, to be called the Challenger, based on the same engineering underpinnings, called the LX platform, as the Dodge Charger, Dodge Magnum and Chrysler 300.

The Challenger concept is based, specifically, on the 1970 Dodge Challenger.

"During development of the concept car we brought an actual 1970 Challenger into the studio," exterior designer Michael Castiglione said in a company announcement. "For me, that car symbolizes the most passionate era of automotive design."

Designers wanted to evoke a mind's-eye image of the car without the visual imperfections required by manufacturing technology of the time, said Tom Trement, Chrysler Group's vice president for advanced vehicle design.

Look for coverage of the 2006 Detroit Auto Show starting Sunday, Jan. 8 at CNN.com.

If they really put on sales that car in the photo I will have to forget all my loyalty waiting for a Chevrolet vintage Chevelle and run to a dealer to by a Dodge for the first time in my family...

I hate the wheels...that is not some kinda fucking pimpmobile.....it needs some slot mags or Cragars or something....

bastardog
01-05-2006, 10:40 AM
I think Cragars looks too old for me. I like the ones in the picture but something with a more classic look like the American Racing Torq Thrust II but the same size 20" or bigger will surely looks better.

A real beauty!!!!

I agree on the wheels...they look like shit.
It needs more rubber...I hate those oversized rims.

Funny thing is kids seem to like 'em...same goes with those coffee can exhaust pipes.

I gotta laugh when a sunfire goes by with a huge pipe that fits so shitty it is angled down.
Thing is punks think it actually adds performance...does not even cross their minds that the manifold and Y-pipe restrict the exhaust.

Plus they sound like shit. Why would you want to sound like a souped up dishwasher? Nothing sounds better than a V8 with hedders(slept the Hedman way) and true dual pipes.

bastardog
01-05-2006, 01:45 PM
I'm with you regarding the exhaust. You can't make power witha just a pipe.
But ovesized rims are the true touch to a car looks.
Lets big rubber with Big Foot....
Lets see if I could find a pic of a true old muscle with big rims for you to see...

Verily, if they releaseth this car, I might have to talk to Dad about speeding up the timetable on this "Second Coming" thing.

The return of the Messiah coincides with the return of a classic car. What could be better?

This is my 71 Torino I used to putt around town in back in HIGH school!! Shaker hood rammed air into the 427 Cobra Jet, with dual 2 1/2 pipes keeping the air flowing through the motor! Factory Ford aluminum intake keeps it's cool holding up that four barrel Holley 360! Shift kit keeps ya snug in the seat! Daytona rear end helps that high end r.p.m.s! This car was a dream! Bad idea with the slave cylinder on the power steering! I musta blown out five of those fish tailin' and doin' power slides! Suns coming up and we're still parked at the drive in! time to roll!

If, and it is a BIG if, they go with this design, they will have learned a lesson from the 4-door Charger joke they built and i'll be ordering an '09 Challenger when they start taking them, with a HEMI and in Hemi Orange with the pistol grip shifter.

Problem is, I doubt it will look anything like the concept car by the time it hits production.
The reason the Challenger won't be out until Sept of '08 is because they have to re-design the LX format the 300, Magnum and Charger are based on which means they are going to totally re-design those cars for '09.
The plus side is that where they cannot make the current LX base work with manual shift, the re-designing will allow them to build the Challenger the way it should be built, with a pistol grip stick shift.

But time is the enemy here as Ford is dominating the resurging "Pony Car" market with the retro Mustang.
There are a whole lot of things that have to happen before Diamler-Chrysler even starts playing with what the Challenger is going to end up being.
The only sure thing here is that they are bringing the Challenger badge back, but the production Charger doesn't give me much hope they will do it justice.

Chevy is sunk by the way, their retro Camaro is a little too little much too late in the game.
Besides, you can order a brand new '69 Camaro crate body for $10,000
and build a real '69 Z-28 for less than half of what their new ride will cost.

It is ironic though that in 1970 Dodge's answer to the Mustang was the Challenger...The new pony car war has begun...and gas prices be damned this time around, lol.
And soon you'll be able to get more than just a Camaro body freshly stamped to build the classic car of your dreams.

Have you priced an original Hemi Cuda' lately?
or any original Hemi car for that matter?

I'm down with reproduction crate bodies, it's the only hope us little fish have of ever cl-owning the real deal.
I'd sell both of my gonads for an original '69 Charger R/T with a factory installed 426 HEMI under the hood, and i'd have to sell them both to get that car.

It was a group of idiots that made that call, and what kills me is that they knew from the feedback from the '99 concept Charger that the consumer wasn't happy with a 4-door design.
And then what we got wearing that badge ended up looking more like a Magnum Family Sedan than any Charger I ever owned.

A Desoto badge would have fit the Charger better in my opinion.

The R/T and even the Daytona options don't help the car any with the loyalists.
But Rumble Bee sales are up since the new so-called Charger hit the streets.
Don't get me wrong, I drove the R/T and Daytona models and they are really fast and surprisingly responsive cars, they are actually very nice. I just can't get over it being referred to as a Charger, because it ain't in any way shape or form.
The Charger left me feeling as though i just got out of an old Imperial with mass balls.

And with a 116-inch wheelbase, it is sure to have some more leg room than most modern production cars.

What is cool about the instrumentation is that when you look at the guages it looks like your looking down on an engine with the cylinder heads removed.
I like the old school Dodge style font they used on the instruments themselves as well.

They took the best of the '70 Challenger and put it in this concept...IT BETTER FUCKING GO INTO PRODUCTION BECAUSE I FUCKING WANT ONE REAL FUCKING BAD!

My fingers are crossed and i'm holding my breath...

Woman poses naked on car at auto show
Associated Press

DETROIT - City officials are trying to figure out how a woman sneaked into the North American International Auto Show after closing time to pose naked atop the new Dodge Challenger.

It happened around 2:30 a.m. Monday when only workers and security guards were supposed to be inside Cobo Center.

Guards found the woman and about a dozen gawkers taking photographs with camera phones, workers told The Detroit News.

"We heard they were all over the Challenger," said Jason Vines, a spokesman for the Chrysler Group, which earlier had tried to give its cars more sex appeal by bringing in fully clothed "Desperate Housewives" star Eva Longoria to pose at its exhibit.

Cobo Director Glenn Blanton said disciplinary action will be taken if employees were involved in the security breach.

Shit, I guarentee the one i order will go above and beyond $35,000, lol.
A Charger with all the options i wanted was $49,000, that was with the R/T package and the 6.1 Hemi.
The Challenger will be sporting a pistol grip and a six speed tranny, two things that make it 10 times the car the Charger is right now.

My price tag will be right around the $50,000 mark i'm sure.
But i'm sure the economy versions will be offered at the $22,000 and up range like all their other models.

But a V-6 in a Challeneger that looks like that?
That's a sin in my opinion.

With an uncle that is about to retire from Chrysler I may just have to take him up on that employee discount he promised me when I was 10 in 1988. He once told me if I ever pulled into his driveway with anything un-american he would destroy it with his trusty sledgehammer. So I have a 93 GMC Sierra 5.7L V-8 with the sport package. 2 1/2 inch dual flowmasters with a brand new Jasper tranny. Ain't nutin special to be sure but it gets me around with 160,000 miles on it. I've been debatin on trading it in. After seeing this lady I'm thinkin I'll hold off till they get released and have my uncle reserve one for me.
