Favorite ELVIS song: LONG BLACK LIMOUSINE (from the '69 Memphis sessions)

Other favorites: his brilliant mid-60s cover of Dylan's TOMORROW WAS A LONG TIME. THIS IS THE STORY (Memphis sessions). ALWAYS ON MY MIND. His mid-70s take on I CAN HELP. Great 50s song called ONE-SIDED LOVE AFFAIR.

Definetely ALWAYS ON MY MIND and SUSPICIOUS MINDS...those two are above others...

As a matter of fact, I don't know enough Elvis songs...maybe 20 really good ones, and that is because I don't have that many albums.

The comeback gig is one of the best gigs ever.

LONG LIVE THE KING!!!

Gotta be the early stuff. Mystery Train from the Sun sessions is my favorite from that time. You can hear him laughing at the end of that one. My Baby Left Me from 1956 is my all time favorite Elvis song I think. From DJ Fontana's drums at the start you know its gonna be a kick ass tune.

Although IMO Jerry Lee Lewis was the man. There was a fella who knew how to rock..

TOO MANY TO LIST! As painful as some of his movies are to watch, I can listen to ELVIS sing anything. I got well over a hundred concerts from 68-77 and never get tired of any of them.

That said, here a few favs:

Early Morning Rain
Hurt
Sweet Caroline
You've Lost that Lovin Feeling
Suspicious Minds
How Great Thou Art
Unchained Melody
What Now My Love
It's Over

Way too many Elvis songs to even mention. However, this wan has always been a fave of mine.

"Wise men say only fools rush in
But I can’t help falling in love with you
Shall I stay
Would it be a sin
If I can’t help falling in love with you

Like a river flows surely to the sea
Darling so it goes
Some things are meant to be
Take my hand, take my whole life too
For I can’t help falling in love with you

Like a river flows surely to the sea
Darling so it goes
Some things are meant to be
Take my hand, take my whole life too
For I can’t help falling in love with you
For I can’t help falling in love with you"

Awesome choices there guys.

Loons, "Baby What You Want Me To Do"......song's just nasty, love that shit.

Rikk, "Long Black Limo".....one of my favs as well, bad ass tune.

One that hasn't been listed and one of my favs (written of course by the great Chuck Berry). Has one of the greatest lines ever written in rock, "Tell the folks back home this is the promised land calling, and the poor boy is on the line":

Promised Land

I left my home in Norfolk Virginia
California on my mind
I straddled that Greyhound
And rode into Raleigh
And on across Caroline

We had motor trouble that turn into a struggle
Halfway across Alabam'
And that hound broke down and left us all stranded
In downtown Birmingham

Right away I brought me a through train ticket
Ridin' across Mississippi clean
And I was on that midnight flyer out of Birmingham
Smoking into New Orleans

Somebody help me get out of Louisiana
Just to help me get to Houston Town
There are people there who care a little about me
And they won't let the poor boy down

Sure as you're born brought me a silk suit
Put luggage in my hand
And I woke up high over Alburquerque
On a jet to the promised land

Working on a T-bone steak a la carte
Flying over to the golden state
Ah when the pilot told us in thirteen minutes
He would set us at the terminal gate

Swing low chariot come down easy
Taxi to the terminal zone
Cut your engines and cool your wings
And let me make it to the telephone

Los Angeles give me Norfolk Virginia
Tidewater four ten o nine
Tell the folks back home this is the promised land calling
And the poor boy is on the line

Working on a T-bone steak a la carte
Flying over to the golden state
Ah when the pilot told us in thirteen minutes
He would set us at the terminal gate

Swing low chariot come down easy
Taxi to the terminal zone
Cut your engines and cool your wings
And let me make it to the telephone

Los Angeles give me Norfolk Virginia
Tidewater four ten o nine
Tell the folks back home this is the promised land calling
And the poor boy is on the line

I can't even begin to list my favorites. However, the ones I love usually have Scotty Moore on guitar. :D There was a perid of time when people made fun of Elvis a lot, and I never understood that.

too hard to pinpoint a fave Elvis SONG, but my fave period was 1969 to about 1973.

Always dug the Are You Lonesome Tonight live version from late 1976/early 1977 in the This Is Elvis Movie, where the REALLY bloated Elvis is up there blathering in a demerol induced stream-of-consciousness rap during the interlude towards the end of the song...purty fucked up.

But his stints at the International in Vegas late 1960s/1970 were shit-hot. Gotta watch Elvis:That's the Way It Is. Fuckin' fantastic. His version of Pork Salad Annie fuckin' ROCKED!

It's so hard to choose... But I think the legendary "laughing version" of "Are you lonesome tonight?" is my all-time fave. I bought both the CD single and the 7" reissues a few years ago. I can't get enough of it! :)

There are a few extra versions of "Trouble" (rehearsals) on the awesome 68 Comeback Special DVD where Elvis obviously has a good time, must be because of the numerous takes they had to do because of such or such details that wouldn't make it.
There are quite a few funny scenes, most of them being rehearsals.

Anyway, to sum it up, the "laughing version" of "Are you lonesome tonight?" and the rehearsals of "Trouble" on the 68 NBC TV Special DVD are my top faves.
I also dig his early day rockers - most of his career too, in fact.
I'll add "If I can dream", because of the lyrics, and the King's voice which takes them even higher... What a beautiful song. I had one of my classes study that one two years ago.

I've always thought I would love an entire album of Dave doing Elvis covers, never gonna happen. Some cool songs he could do:

CC Rider
Jailhouse Rock
Tiger Man (imagine DLR doing that one!!!!)
Fever
Trouble

Don't rip me, I know Dave's chops aren't on the same level as Elvis by any stretch, but with Dave's vocal style, he could pull off some cool version.

Diamond David Lee Roth sang an AMAZIN' version of Heartbreak Hotel on the 1983 Tour-a nah yezz...an' I've heard him break into Elvis voice during Runnin' With The Devil, Ice Cream Man, and Pretty Woman, 'specilly on those incredible acoustic warm-up radio gigs he did for the Roth/Hagar Tour in '02 yez yez yez.

I've always thought that Elvis went into hiding in '77, Diamond Dave was crowned the King Of Rock N Roll in '78 with the release of VHI. That's the truth-a nah.

Pretty much like everything but the movie songs.

One of my favorite video clips is Elvis playing the piano and singing Unchained Melody.

It's right before he died, and he's all bloated and sweaty, but there's something about it that gives me chills.

That version of Are You Lonesome Tonight? on the "This is Elvis" soundtrack where he fucks up the spoken part is one of my favorites too.

I think that if I ever heard Roth sing "Love Me Tender", I would melt like MacArthur's Park in the dark.

I know he doesn't "do" ballads as rule..but this ain't no regular lame ass ballad.

Anybody with me?

This is what I meant by the "laughing version".

Elvis made a habit of not sticking to the lyrics. Normally, Elvis should sing at a certain moment
"Do you gaze at your doorstep and picture me there". In this particular version he sings "Do you gaze at your bald head and wish you had hair".
The song continues for a couple of seconds and then Elvis spotted a man that is completely bald.
Hence the laughter.
In the end of the song, Elvis mumbles something like : "Oh God, I have never met this before, ..."

"Elvis made a habit of not sticking to the lyrics." Damn, how I dig that! :)

How about the part where he says:

"And I'm standing there.........in my underwear."

On a couple of my boots, instead of saying "You've made my life complete" on LMT, he says "You've made my life a.....wreck" :D

Of course Suspicious Minds where he said alot "I hope this suit doesn't tear apart" when he'd be down on his knees.

On the version I've heard, he starts out with the"all the world's a stage" bit, gets tongue tied, mumbles some gibberish, and ends it with "plus tax."
Then he says, "now I'm standing there, without any hair", and ends it with, "and if you won't come back to me.......oh the hell with it!"

Great stuff!

BTW, this site allows you to serch for and view videos of all kinds - check out the result for "Rolling Stones", for example.
