We need to get this!! I heard today on a Canadian radio station that there is an article in Esquire magazine featuring a Dave Grohl story confirming a long rumored incident that took place at the 1992 MTV Awards show...

A fist-fight between Nirvana and Guns&Roses in which Cobain and Rose squared off..

I'm hoping someone has this...

Here's a promo extract from the "Q&A"...

Got it!

BEST DRUMMER: Taylor Hawkins

BEST ENTERTAINER: Dave Grohl

"This is quite a moment for me. I'd like to think that I've finally graduated to the great heights of Charlie Chaplin, Billy Crystal and Dave Chappelle. I don't fucking know about entertaining. I get drunk and play rock'n'roll. It's what I do. I have the greatest job in the world. You might have well have given this to a porn star."

ESQ: What's your onstage philosophy?
"Imagine having a keg party and inviting eight thousand of your best friends. You have to make sure everything is right — the grills hot, the tap is working. No foam. And as the host, you have to do shots with everyone in the room. It's your responsibility to make sure everyone goes home throwing up chicken all over their fucking bathrooms. That's basically the story of my life."

ESQ: Could you do this job sober?
"You can. I do interviews sober. Everything else is better wasted."

ESQ: At last years Esky Awards, Slash told us his most memorable awards show was the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards, when Nirvana and Guns N'Roses squared off backstage.
"I remember that when Nevermind first came out, Axl was a really big fan of us. Guns N'Roses was about to do this massive stadium tour with Metallica, and they wanted us to open. So Axl had been calling Kurt non-stop. One day we're walking through an airport and Kurt says, "Fuck. Axl Rose won't stop calling me." I think it represented something bigger. Nirvana didn't want to turn into Guns N'Roses. So Kurt started talking shit in interviews and then Axl started talking back. It went back and forth like tenth-grade bullshit. Then we got to the awards and our trailers were all in the same one hundred yards. And Courtney was there, which never makes anything easier. So it didn't take much to blow up into a full-fleged showdown. Kurt and Courtney were screaming at Axl. Axl screamed back. It was all just soap-opera bullshit. Krist, our bass player, almost got in a fistfight. I was just the drummer, so I shouted some loud, funny shit and hit the bar."

All I remember is the awards show itself, where Grohl was calling Axhole out at the end of Nirvana's performance, while Krist lay on the stage, semi unconscious after tossing his bass in mid -air and hitting himself in the head. And Kurt kicking him in the ass because he thought Krist was faking.

Aside from the 96 VH Reunion, that had to be the greatest thing I ever saw on the MTV awards.

Gotta go with GN'R. Axl may be a prick but they were a hell of alot better than that crap Nirvana.

Didn't Axl have some bullshit feud going on about the same time with Vince Neil, too? Seem to remember some shit about Axl wanting to kick Vince's ass, and Vince going on MTV and challenging him to a fight...

Dig Grohl saying "and of course Courtney as there, which didn't make things any easier..." There's an understatement!

Haha yeah He and Vinny were going at it too. Watching the videos were hilarious, a guy actually thinks highly of himself challenging somebody to a fight on MTV.

Yeah... I remember Dave grabbing the mic after the Nirvana performance (at the MTV awards) and saying "hi Axl, hi Axil". Then, I heard it was a full-on feud. Axl is a punk! I also remember him jumping into the crowd in St. Louis going after someone. I'll tell ya, if that punk was to have done that to me... he would've gotten a ghetto style beatdown!

It was around this time (1991-1993) that Axl started pulling walk-outs on shows, acting like a fucking diva (I found that whole 'Get In The Ring' track embarrassing)...the point where he started believing he WAS Guns and Roses...small wonder Izzy bailed when he did.

Also, that whole poofy 'swimming with dolphins' bullshit on the Estranged video...

GnR did something really sensible in following up Appetite with Lies, but the whole Use Your Illusion period was just overblown...pompous.

as I said before...a rock'n'roll frontman who walks off stage because someone throws a (plastic) bottle of water on stage (instead of fucking the guy's girlfriend) is a P U S S Y !!!

Absolutely! Just read my Dave quote...

Anyway, I personally send both bands back to their mothers's back to back: none of them are a golden great - I mean, I enjoy listening to their records (well, G'n'R most of all), but I'll never ever consider either of them as a golden great...
