My wonderful, adorable, pain-in-the-ass one year old son has taken it upon himself to turn my Dvd's into frisbees, chew toys, coasters etc.

So I thought it would be a good idea to back these puppies up before they became useless.

So I go to Best Buy, almost pick up a dvd burning program by Roxio, when I see that it will burn only unencrypted dvds.

Well, almost everything is encrypted at this point right? The Best Buy guy said I'd have to get an additional program to break the encrypts.

Im at a loss as to where to even look for something like this.

Any suggestions on programs to use (burner and encrypt breaker) and/or where to get them?

all help is GREATLY appreciated.

There are freeware de-encrypters available online. Should be able to find them with a Google Search.

Also, look for DVD shrink while you're at it. Just in case a DVD you're backing up is larger than 4.5 GB and you only have single klayer DVD-R media.

DVD Shrink uses the nero engine rather than Roxio though, zso you would need to get Nero. But it's better than Roxio anyway, by far.

Roxio sucks, take it back NOW.

I guess I'm happy I didnt get the Roxio program lol.

So, get Nero. Ok.

Any particular name to the program, or do they only have one burner prog?

thanks for the leads...

Nero Burning Rom is the full name of the program.

Yeah get DVD Shrink. It Rules.

http://www.dvdshrink.org/

And I think DVD Decrypter has it's own burn engine. It is recommended for use burning. But Nero works pretty well also.

i think i saw Nero on sale at Best Buy this week, maybe around $40 after rebates.

DVD Shrink is no longer supported, but it will rip 99% of the DVD's out there. if it doesn't, Decrypter will rip 'em.

nero can be found here:

ftp://ftp.nero.com/software/Nero7/Nero-7.0.8.2_eng_no_yt.exe
A keygen can be found anywhere ;)

DVD Shrink works without Nero. I had Nero and it blew cock! Roxio works much better for me.

ok, starting to become unclear on a thing or so here....

will dvd shrink work as a burner also? I understnad the idea of shrinking it to fit onto a single layer dvd... but if it is a program on its own.. what point does it fit into the process?

run Nero to rip the dvd, then shrink to shrink it, and then nero to burn it?

sorry for the maybe obvious questions, but im out of my water here....

You use Shrink first. Then once all that is done, you burn. If you have Nero, usually it automatically starts the burn. If you use another program, you save it to file and then burn. At least that's how I do it, and I'm no computer expert. It works for me though.

I never heard of anyone who actually thought Roxio worked better than Nero. You guys must get a different version of Roxio up in Hoserland. This side of the border, it's crap.

I made less beer coasters with the first generation Linux burning programs than I did with Roxio. Never had a bad burn with Nero.

That's Nero for Windows. Nero for Linux is entirely another story. That version still needs a lot of work.

K3B is the way to go for Linux users. And DVD encoding is still very unstable in penguin land.

Which is the primary reason I still bother to run Windows at all.

Roxio is a piece of shit. I checked it out on several occasions.

I deleted it with extreme prejudice.

Nero is the way to go for most disc burning projects.

For me...Nero made all kinds of coaters.. It SUCKED THE SHIT OUT OF A DEAD CORPSE!!!! Awful! Once I went to Roxio I was able to at least get burns to work...which is more than Nero allowed me to do,.

^^^^

That all depends on your dvds too.

If you buy Sam's Club DVDs, don't expect much. Make sure your drive is worth a damn too.

I have been using Nero for 6 years.

Never had any problems.

Roxio sucks shit. Burns too many coasters.

But then, everyone has a different machine, as well as different levels of expertise...
