What's anyone opinions on Kiss?

I love the seventies stuff, but I'm never too sure after that, I think thy descended into self parody.

Thought that there should be a thread though, since Gene Simmons "discovered" Van Halen.

Alive could be the greatest live record ever?

Right up there with "No Sleep...."

They were no Aerosmith though.

Period.

I think it's the case that they used to rock big time in the '70's.

and now they don't!

Back in the mid seventies these guys were larger than life. But four very different personalities can only co-exist for so long, before the foundation cracks into pieces. If Ace and Peter had stayed off the substances and focused on playing music, they may have gone on a little longer. Simmons the Business Man turned the band into a traveling Walt Disney act for 8 to 12 year olds. Lets face it when your 17 the last thing you want to be listening to is music being adored by 10 year old kids. I would say they were really something special from 74 to 77. What separated VH from KISS was musical talent. VH had both showmanship and musicianship. You can't go wrong with that combo, hence the deterioration of Van Halen's live performances when Hagar joined the fold. The visual element of the band disintigrated with the departure of The Diamond One, sending VH into the category of mediocrity.

The 70's stuff was great. I mean I grew up with pictures of them on my wall as a child. Ace Frehley is responsible for me picking up a Guitar and playing it...

I have a remaster of "Alive" that still gets rotation... It is a real shame that Gene and Paul have turned the band into a glorified tribute act...

Nice to see he is still breathing.. Talk about record amounts of drug use..

Still dig and listen to most of the stuff they did up through Creatures (although Dynasty, Unmasked and The Elder don't get much play by me anymore)...

After Creatures, I don't really care for much they put out. Lick It Up and Animalize are listenable, but from Asylum through Hot In The Shade...well, that stuff is just average, and I don't really bother with pedestrian fare...life's too fucking short to spend time yawning along with Hide Your Heart, you know? Revenge was okay, but in many ways only stood out in comparison to the swill the band had been putting out since 1985.

Put it to you this way: if I went to a KISS show, they could choose to only play tunes from the first album up through Love Gun and I wouldn't feel cheated. That's usually my barometer for a band's essential catalog (ex: Aerosmith and Get Your Wings through Pump, Van Halen and 1978's Van Halen through 1984).

Now, the band is just a joke. I'd say the whole reunion business wore out its welcome for me around 2000. These days it's flogging a dead horse, but as long as people keep turning up, it'll keep continuing. Even for a band like KISS, which was always as much about making a buck as it was making music, I'd think there would come a point where continuing on the way they are going would seem tasteless, but Gene's greed is pretty limitless, and he knows nobody's gonna pay attention to him and shell their money over unless he keeps slopping on the greasepaint, so there you go.

And yes, Paul Stanley is defintitely NOT the most masculine man to front a rock band...his nonstop prancing, preening and feminine posturing has caused more than one person to wonder, or at the very least do a doubletake and raise the eyebrows...

Blouse-wearing buttercup.

KISS is one of my all-time favorite bands. I grew up listening to them.

Even when there are countless number of bands that are musically better than KISS, there is just something about the band that I liked.

Back in the day, it was the whole package. Not just the music (which from 1974-1977 is awesome), but the image, the stage show, the ATTITUDE.

I mean, there's a lot of flash and attitude when you look at the old makeup pics from the 70s and early 80s. They were really "LARGER THAN LIFE".

They certainly had IT.

Now, song wise, they certainly had their fair share of stinkers in the 80s.

And I absolutely hate with a passion on what they're doing now (Eric and Tommy in Ace and Peter's makeup and costumes).

But I still listen to the albums that get me going (Alive!, Dressed to Kill, Destroyer, etc. are CLASSICS.)

Rip It Out

Now i know, you've been cheatin' and lyin' all the time
I didn't know you were gonna be so unkind
I've been trying just to find out how we went wrong
But i know that i can't trust you girl anymore
Chorus:
Rip it out, take my heart, you wanted it from the start
You got it now, so goodbye, so rip it out, watch me cry

It's so sad, i'm not glad to be with you today
And it's bad, 'cos i can't stop the pain day by day
If i knew how to stop you, i don't think i'd try
I think it's better if we just part and don't say goodbye

Chorus

I hope you suffer!

Chorus repeats 2x

Rip it out (repeats out)

it's not the original, but it's still a classic!

I think the stand out tune on Alive 2 is Shock Me. Ace just kicked ass on that tune and the rest of the band was tighter than Tom Thumb's ass.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Never been a fan. One or two good tunes, but thats all that interests me. You could get a great KISS compilation album on a single disc as far as I'm concerned.

Ouch!

As far as "Fuck me, suck me" songs go, nobody does it better!

I've just always seen it as "We're not good musicians so lets get attention by wearing make-up". Same as Twisted Sister, same as Slipknot.

You can't compare KISS with other make-up bands, because KISS were one of the first make-up bands. Twisted and Slipknot did it because they were inspired by KISS!
Also, KISS are actually good musicians ;)

Shaun Ponsonby

And Kiss stole it from Alice Cooper.

Actually, Jay Jay French from Twisted Sister was in Wicked Leicster. True dat.

Yeah I know Alice was before them. Kiss was one of the first.

binnie

the make-up was just a gimmick.

You don't have to be great players to make great music.

Kiss (used to) Rock!
