Ok guys, we're always bitchin' that new bands are a disapointment so here's an idea:

If you find a new band that realeases a decent album, put in here with a brief review of who/ what they sound like.

Don't matter what type/ style it is, if you dig it, then tell us about it.

That way, we might get to hear some decent music every once in a while.

Music is for sharing!

Here we go

Bullets & Octane "In the mouth of the young"

Rock n Roll like it should be played. Imagine early 80's sunset-strip bastardised with punk and kicked up the ass by Chuck Berry!

Great little player, big balls and lots of fuel.

As scuzzy as they come!

Band called Wolfmother just released an album.

Great rock n roll album, reminds me of late 60's garage rawk with a bit of the Sabbs and DC throne in.

Not gonna change your life, but worth a spin.

There was band called

Fight Paris

Who had an album out last year, sort of gutter punk rock.

Not for every one, but a great record if you can get into it.

This bands sounds like a bar fight! Hell yeah!

I have heard Wolfmother and it is interesting... I have the single from iTunes they are now playing.. I will check out the others

Binnie,

If you are in the mood for something different, give these bands a gander...They are not new by any means but some of my favs..

KiD

http://www.thetwilightsingers.com/
(this is Greg Dulli's (Afgan Whigs fame) current band. I just saw them at the 930 Club and they fookin rocked.. Dulli is a Badass)

http://www.socialdistortion.com/
(One of my favorite artist's Mike Ness. Their latest release Sex, Love, and Rock & Roll is bound to be a classic.)

http://www.blackrebelmotorcycleclub.com/
(These guys kick ass, they have been compared to the Jesus & Mary Chain but have much more depth.. Check out all three releases. The latest one is a folky rock (Which I like) but the first two are heavier)

BRMC are a good band, remind me of the Jesus and Mary Chain...

I picked up Social Distortion, Sex.... on your recommendation and it is a killer record, I RECOMMNED EVERY GIVE IT A LISTEN

(I meant to PM about that to say thanks, but I'll say it here: thanks)

Binnie,

That is cool you like BRMC.. I have seen them twice in concert and they fucking rocked.. Also, I am glad you like the Social Distortion.. You should also pick up "Somewhere between Heaven & Hell".. Mike Ness can do no wrong in my book.. They are touring right now btw..

Since you are checking out the Twilight Singers, also check out the Afgan Whigs.. Start with "1965"... Dulli kicks ass..

Is it Beer thirty yet? What time is it in Scotland???

Here is pick of Mike Ness outta respect...

Being a teen, I'm forever watching MTV and VH1 and all these new bands. Here's a few of my favorites:

1. Children Of Bodom (power metal+death metal vox)
2. Bullet For My Valentine (Thrash metal+plus hardcore vox)
3. Lacuna Coil (Evanescence with better guitars)
4. Arch Enemy (Upbeat death metal)
5. AFI (Darker pop-punk)

()=Sounds like

Just a note: I watch a lot of Headbanger's Ball

I'm seeing Ol' Cov in Liverpool, he said he's gonna dig some older songs out as well-I believe he mentioned "Mistreated", which will be good. I hope he digs out my personal favourite 'Snake song, "Ain't Gonna Cry No More". Its just one of those songs that you go "Yes" when you finish writing it.

Special mention must go to

Porcupine Tree
Spock's Beard

They're not really "new", but they are both awesome and should be listened to by everyone.

Porcupine Tree sound like a few members of Pink Floyd joined Rush, and Spock's Beard once featured the genius that IS Neal Morse.

Check out these albums

Porcupine Tree-"Deadwing"/"In Absentia"

Spock's Beard-"Snow"/"The Kindness of Strangers"

I really like the swedish IN FLAMES, dannish MNEMIC, finnish CHILDREN OF BODOM but can remember any of norway to compelte the list...

Oh and I almost forgot to mention Bullet For My Valentine...

Have you noticed that many of the new US bands are imtating the scadinavian ones ? like Trivium, As I lay Dying (also good ones) and many other... The so called melodic metal was very popular 10 years ago and the new generations sounds very similar to them...

I think Trivium are different to the other two bands there.

Whilst there is a similarity in vocal delivery, screaming followed by "melodic" chorus, I think Trivium have a more classic thrash feel to them.

Not a new band, but a new album

Buckcherry "15"

No radical change in dirrection here, still dirty shit-kicking rock n roll, blues based sunset-strip fun.

Great summer record.

turn up and play loud!

Might as well put The Answer here as well.

New band who worship Zeps Sabbath and Humble Pie!

Well worth a listen....

Mr. Vengeance

I hear good things about a band called Van Halen. They apparently have a great guitarist and what some are calling one of the best frontmen of all time!

I hear the guitar player drinks a bit, but I'm sure he'll keep it in check. We wouldn't want a band with this much going for it to fuck things up.

binnie
07-28-2006, 06:44 AM
Rye Coalition "Curses"

This album got me very excited! A heddy doses of The Stooges and AC/DC, with enough enrgy to run a powerplant!

Sure, you've heard it all before, but what separates this band from the pack is the fact that they don't just play at breakneck speed for 12 songs, so all the tracks sound the same: there has been some thought involved, some variation and melody.

Produced by Dave Grohl, this is a record that is well worth checking out if you like Rock N Roll loud!

binnie
07-28-2006, 06:46 AM
Hardcore Superstar "Hardcore Superstar"

This band has failed to deliver on previous releases, but this is an absoute gem of a record.

Sex, drugs, rock n roll played like a bar brawl supervised by Motley Crue and Guns n Roses, with the spirit of Johnny Thunders casting an observing eye.

This is my soundtrack to the summer, alongside the new Buckcherry record!

Reinventing the wheel it maybe, but it makes me wanna fight and fuck!

Frameshift "Absence of Empathy"

Anyone like prog?

this is one of the guys from Dream Theatre with Sebatian Bach on vocals.

Whilst I think some of the songs could have done with editing a little, this is one of the best records I have heard this year.

Very odd, but cool once you get into it!

New Band called "Dirty Rig" with ex-Warrior Soul singer Kory Clarke.

Necrophagist scares the living hell out of me to be honest. That, and they're kinda cheesy. Anyways, this one's been out for about a month but, what the hell.

AFI's got an album called Decemberunderground. It's pretty good, it's darker than their earlier stuff. Check the single "Miss Murder"

Also, revising an earlier post, I change my mind about Atreyu. They've got some catchy tunes, some are a bit whiney, but they're good. They're big-time influenced by hair metal, which is kinda cool

Mako do you really think Dec under is darker than Sing the Sorrow?
I Feel Dec underground is over polished eventhough I expected that to be the case as they take on the next level. AFI smokes live so check them if you can.

Wolfmother has been the most fun party music this summer.

and though its had a year cycle its still a new band to most A7X rocks like a modern Maiden and they have a rift against Dillinger Escape Plan like Motley vs. GnR in the day. Both Sevenfold and Dillenger will have futures.

The 2 new acts I dont get are Maishayu (dancing hasidic jew) and Gnarles Barkley these both have huge buzz but not my cup.

Hmmmm, treat with caution my friend.

The new record is produced by Bob Rock, and is their best IMO.

However, they are jumped-up pop band at best. They are huge here, and have gone from a rap rock band to and emo light.

I would say be wary of the earlier records bu give this one a try.

Just checked out the only album by a new band

"From Mars to Sirus" by Gojira.

Now I am a cynical bastard when it comes to modern metal, but this is unlike anything I hve ever heard.

They've taken the best bits from Meshuggah and Mastodon and welded it together with some craxy arrangements.

One of the heaviest records I have ever heard, but it also has moments of being quite progressive. This is ultra-heavy metal.

But there are lots of layers and shades to it too, as well as some really thoughtful lyrics.

The production leaves a lot of space between the drums and guitars, so it sounds live and allows the songs room to breathe and pulsate.

Vocally, it aint singing, but I wouldn't say it was typical cookie-monster either. The nearest I can compare the singer to is Devin Townsend from Strapping Young Lad: he sort of grunts and growls, but you can still understand him, and at times he drops into melodic stuff too.

I recommend downloading this NOW if you are open minded musically and like the ultra-heavy: this band wipes the floor with the majority of modern American metal bands.

Fuck me.

Great rock n roll album, reminds me of late 60's garage rawk with a bit of the Sabbs and DC throne in.

Not a new band, but check out Slayer's new record "Christ Illusion".

Fuck me, it's full on slayer, with Lombardo back on drums. Now Bostaph is probably a better drum than Lombardo (technically I mean), but for me he was always a little too busy for Slayer, he over did the drum fills.

With Lombardo back, things have been stripped down and simplieifed, adding even more weight to the riifage. Lombardo also sounds like thunder on this one!

Seems that Kerry King did the vast majority on the writing on this one, so it's Slayer at ultra-speed. I have to say that sometimes it does feel like "Slayer by numbers" but those moments are few and far between. And yes, Kerry continues to play exactly the same guitar solo that he's played for 20+ years!!

Overall though a furious record, ful of insance time changes, sheer staggering aggression, breakneck speed and some awesome, awesome riffs.

not too sure if I prefer it to "God Hates Us All" yet though.

Deicide have been going for years (about 15 I think).

But you are right, they are shit.

The "singer" Glen Benton, has an inverted cross burned into his head, and claimed for years that he thought that he would die on his 33 (I think) birthday.

Well, it came and went, and the Cunt's still making shit like this....

Britpop has certainly run its course creatively, as far as I am concerned.

IMO Blur were the best of the bunch, in the sense of actually been inventive and not just a 60's tribute band, but I was never a huge fan.

Pulp were also harmless fun

Oasis, Supergrass, Bluetones, Dodgy, Suede can all fuck off as far as I am concerned - that's not Rock n Roll.

It's seem like all the current wave of New York bands and their clones want to sound like the Strokes (which is a bad thing, IMO) and worship at the feat of The Stooges (which is great, except that none of them has Iggy's balls or danger).

Better than generic pop, but still making a living doing things that bands from the previous tow generations did a lot better.

As for Pete Doherty and The Libertines - utter shite. Talked the rock n roll talk, but couldn't walk the walk. More hype than a J Lo perfume....

Pete Doherty is an asshole who does things for attention.

My dad made the point that he's almost like a Jim Morrison of the 21st Century, although Jim didn't do stuff for attention, it was just him. Also, Jim had the talent/songs to back it all up. Which, of course, Doherty doesn't.

They are "influenced" by a strange bunch of bands...

Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Tool, Opeth, Marillion, Muse, Sigur Ros, Dream Theater, Anja Garbarek, Nine Inch Nails, Chroma Key, ABBA, King Crimson, The Beatles, Katatonia, Frank Zappa, Rush, Anathema, Oceansize

Now their last album "Leviathon" was a CLASSIC I am not overstating, I have been listening to heavy music for years and am the biggest cynic with regards to new music, but that blew me away like the first time I heard "Reign in Blood". Seriously.

This one is even better - exceptional, I have rarely been so impressed with a record.

Trivium are GOOD and have plenty of potential, but are not a GREAT band yet.

They are essentially re-hashing 80's thrash, but they play with real balls and anger.

They have been over-hyped, but they may make a great record one day

Another band that I find kind of good: Stone Sour. Their new album's called "Come What(ever) May", it's very heavy, yet melodic and catchy. It was formed by two members of Slipknot, but don't worry, no stupid masks here, this is MUCH better than Slipknot. Check out the tracks 30/30-150 and Through Glass

I'm with you on that Mako - my girlfriend bought both their records over the weekend and we have bee listneing to them non-stop. Pretty decent stuff, some really strong songs.

When I can forget about all the masks and shit, I actually quite like Slipknot. I thought "Iowa" was a pretty good record (not too keen on the last one though).

I just find it hard to take any horror kitsch seriously, and it's a shame that they use it.

(Although it's a compete double standard on my part because I love Kiss)

I've just got suggestions out F-hole here. Yet another one: Shadows Fall. They're a metalcore band from Boston, and have a great sound. Heavy, good guitar solos, and vocals that send chills up your spine. They released an album called "Fallout From The War" in June. Check out the songs "December", "In Effigy", and for an older one, "Inspiration On Demand"

binnie
09-11-2006, 03:40 AM
Mako, we have very similar tastes!

I dig Shadows Fall, a bit samey in places, but a band that can rip your head off when you want the full on agro metal.

I'm not too keen on bands that do the heavy verse/ melodic chorus usually (I think it's a cop out, and the chorus's are never actually that melodic) but this is a band I will make an exception for.

If you like them, check out Poison the Well.

The Panic Channel - (One)

Now, anyone who's seen Rockstar: Supernova knows that Dave Navarro is a bit of a cock - if I have to hear him say that a lacklustre butchering of a classic song was "killer" or "Dope" one more time, I'll scream.

However, this album is spectacular. It is essentially Janes Addiction with a new singer (Perry Faral M.I.A). There are hints of the ehtereal madness that was JA throughout this album, but overall it's more of an out and out heavy rock affair, packed with great songs, beautiful melodies, jaw dropping solos and headbanging riffs. Navarro and drummer Steven Perkins lay down brilliant performances and make the band sounds alive.

The Singer is nothing like Farrell - far more straight up rock, but still able to find beautiful meloldies and some interesting lyrics.

I was cynical about this, thought it'd be shit actually, but it is staggeringly good: no-one over plays, and the band fuse metal, rock, blues, prog and make a colourful and emotional cocktail of great music.

Best new band I've heard this decade is a Japanese trio called Electric Eel Shock. These crazy Asian bastards played at the State Capitol in October 2004 as part of a "Rock Against Bush" free festival and despite the cold and windy day, the drummer took the stage dressed in nothing but a sock. And I mean old school Chili Peppers style, not on his feet.

Add to that the Japanese Dee Dee Ramone on bass and a guitarist who seems to be some sort of Hendrix-Iommi hybrid and it's an interesting mix.

Their one flaw is that English isn't their native language, so don't expect lyrical brilliance from them. But then, that never stopped the Ramones.

Children of Bodom released a two disc live album called Chaos Ridden Years Stockholm Knockout Live. Bodom is one killer live band, and this proves this. They've got a DVD of this coming December 5th, so I'd suggest picking it up. Some cool highlights are the "Clash Of The Booze Brothers" keyboard/guitar duel, Jaaska's drum solo, Roope's guitar solo, and the beginning of "Downfall" where Alexi and Roope play riffs from Motley Crue and Judas Priest

I found this one when I was getting into Bodom, they're pretty good. The band's called Sinergy. Alexi Laiho, Bodom's guitarist/singer, played lead guitar with these guys in the early and mid 90's. His ex wife, Kim Goss, sings for em. They've got a good metal sound with very ambient vocals. Try out the album Suicide By My Side, it's a Sinergy classic

I'll add Sinergy to my list of bands to track down. Cheers.

Oh hell yeah. Shadows Fall just released the first single from their upcoming album "Threads Of Life". The single's called "Redemption", and personally, I think it sounds killer. very old school blended with new school. Check it out on myspace.com/shadowsfall

Pain of Salvation - been around for 10 years or so. One of the best bands around, IMO. - They play prog metal or something like it. Check out their albums in chronological order.

I checked that out, and it's really good.

Shadows Fall have nver reached their potential on record, IMO, but this song gives me hope that the new one will be a killer!

As a matter of fact, Atreyu released a version of their album "The Curse" with NO VOCALS! It's better than the version with the vocals. But anyway, speaking of Atreyu, since they got a deal with Hollywood Records, their old label Victory just released a "Best Of" disc. It features all their songs on their four albums "Fractures In The Facade", "Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses", "The Curse", and "A Deathgrip On Yesterday"

Brand New Sin.

Simple, balls out southern fried metal.

Like C.O.C/ Down but songs are nowhere near as well written.

Heavy, fun and powerful.

Cheers Mako, it's on my list.

Check out Mendeed - The Dead Live By Love.

It's a good solid record from a British band. The sound borrows heavily form the New Wave Of american Heavy metal bands - ie, there are a lot of breakdowns and the singer alternates from snarl to singing - but I'd say the sound is a lot simpler with less tracks of production, and as a result more powerful.

It annoys me when Brit bands try to sound like Amercians, even singing in American accents, but this album is a definate winner nonethless. The songs are all well written, there's no padding or wasted space in them, and when it works it really works: awesome solos which aren't self-indulgent but compliemnt the songs; and the guitar players never forget about melody, they don't just thrash out the whole time, but inject another level into the songs with beautiful melodic playing which is often very subtle.

Which is why it is all the more baffling that they cock-up the "maiden-esque" hamrony parts: note to all modern-metal bands, when you play these parts at 160, 180, 200 bpm they end up sounding very jolly and very weak, which undermines the power in the rest of the music as well as the emotional content of the lyrics.

Criticisms aside, this is well worth a listen and the band clearly has potential for much bigger and better things.

One of my favorite bands (that is new-er) is ZO2, out of Brooklyn, NY.

A hard rock band that has a melodic sound with a bluesier/funkier bent. They are , as often described, the perfect melding of the 70's rock sound with modern arrangements. Their debut, Tuesdays & Thursdays is fantastic and only slightly behind is the follow-up Ain't It Beautiful.

Not only a great band to spin on your CD player, but one hell of a fun band to see live.

Grate Binnie! Always glad to hear someone's happy with these guys. They're dedicated as hell and should be a lot more well known, but we won't get into what sucks about the music biz right now.

There's lots more music on the MS page and some on their site. Here's another video, though just concert footage from when they toured in '04 with KISS and Poison.

Also, for anyone who gets the IFC (Independent Film Channel), ZO2 will have a show premiering sometime later this year regarding the travails of a band trying to make their rock dreams come true while juggling day jobs as well. http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117957058.html?categoryid=1236&cs=1&query=ZO2

Thanks again for the kind words Binnie!

Ok, I decided to not even bother to give this one a thread of it's own, but here it is. Avenged Sevenfold, who I'm no longer too crazy about since their fanbase got flooded with Hot Topic shopping scenester fucks, has released a cover of Pantera's "Walk". It's actually almost dead-on, save for differences in vocals. Check it out, if you care
