View Full Version : EVH MXR Pedals

I have the Phaser. I like it when I finger tap/hammer on and noodle like that. Sounds good. Cool stripes but hey looks like Ed's doesn't ever plan on touring again because you know if he was he wouldn't be busy authorizing official "striped" goods at high costs. ie. striped Zippo for $75...what a fucking rip off. Anyway, the Flanger pedal is out now. It's even more expensive than the Phaser and before I go out and spend $200 on it I figure I would see what the fine folks here have to say about that product. Anyone here check it out yet?

Also, seems like I remember the ad's and what not describing the Phaser as how you acheive the "Unchained" sound and now the Flanger is described that way....'sup with that? WTF, Gonna be a EVH tuner pedal come out next labeled "how Eddie tuned to the "Unchained" sound?!?!?!?!?!

I don't ever remember them touting the phaser as the pedal that gets you the Unchained sound. There's a lot of phase all over the old albums, but not on Unchained. The woosh sound on Unchained is definitely a flanger. I've got a vintage MXR M117 flanger and it nails that tone fairly easy. However, I guess this reissue has a button that you can hit for a preset of what was used on Unchained.

There's a little bit of phaser during the breakdown. "Hey man that suit is yooou..." etc.

I have the pedal and it was money well spent. I can get Ed's tone and I can achieve my own. If you move the knob, it's a very smooth transition of speed, and the button can either give you a harsh modern phase sound or a lush vintage sound. I love it.

I haven't got the EVH job, and I can't say I've been tempted to. I've got an old MXR Phase 90 and that works fine for me.

I ordered the flanger and phase 90 MONTHS AGO from the Van Halen Store. STILL NOTHING - they had no problem debiting my credit card though. I am becoming worried and so should any cunt that rips me off because I will seek retribution of the physical kind.

Sounds like flanger to me...especially when you back off on the volume knob on the guitar. In fact I'd bet good money that it is a flanger.

Can't be. The sound's too "chewy" for a flanger.

i've got non-EVH versions of both the flanger and phaser

the phaser is a lot more usable to my ear than the flanger, although it has more background noise

Hiya Panamark

I'm down in Black Rock.

Pitty about the Bluebaggers this year, I hear from a reliable source that the players despise Dennis and that is part of the problem.

To make this post relevant to this thread, I finally recieved an email from the VH shop informing me that my pedals are finally on their way.

Black Rock !

Know it well, I used to go swimming down that
way. Is the old cerberus wreck still down there ??
I lived at Mentone many moons ago..
(I know that was just around the corner from Black Rock)

So are you a Blues fan yourself ??

I had no idea the palyers were getting pissed
at Pagan. To me they seem on the verge of
stepping up. It was great to see em slaughter
the Dee's last week. Prior to that game, they
have been real close many times. I think they
have turned the corner..

Interesting, I guess we will know when Pagan gets
resigned or not :)

Bring back Parkin I say !!

Congrats on your shipment from the VH shop.
Just dont go ordering copies of "The Inside" magazine :D

Fuck! You were just around the corner. Yep, the Cerberus is still there, just.

I used to play for the Pies in the 80's/90's - the worst kick of all time and the last name of a well known serial killer. I actually have an interest in a few horses with Diesel Williams hence I get to hear Carlton info every now and again.

Parko was a bloody legend and the best bloke to boot. I reckon Sticks is the man to Coach?

The VH shop has allways been good to me in the past and they did email me to explain the holdup which was out of their control.

I get up to Sydney for work every now and again, should catch up for a beer sometime?

Always great to catch up with anyone that worships at the altar of Diamond Dave.

Dude !!

You made it to AFL level ! Good onya mate. Im trying to go
over all the surnames from Collingwood that were the same
as serial killers. That accounts for most of Collingwoods surnames :D
lol...

I used to play all through my teens, represented SA at state level
(when I lived there for a while..) But two bad knee dislocations
when I was 16/17, pretty much ended my footy.. It was going
to be my whole life... Ah well, that door closed and music was
the new door.. Still love my AFL passionately. My Dad used to
be in Charge of AVCO when they sponsored Carlton, So I used
to watch the games at Princes Park from the corporate box seats..
Saw all the great players.. Man those were the days..

Diesel is one of my all time heroes !! He could handball better
than anyone, ever... LEGEND !

Well knowing your background I trust your sources about
Pagan a lot more now :D

Yes we will have to catch up sometime.

Hmmm..... Serial Killers.... Collingwood...
Gonna think about this for a while..

Cheers mate..

The real clue is the part about being the worst kick of all time.

You must of been a hell of a player to play at state level for SA especially in that age group, I remember Teal Cup etc how strong SA allways are.

What are you up to musically?

You can hear what I am working on at http://www.myspace.com/jamesdamon

Fuck that, I was a hack anyway,
too long ago to give a fuck about.

I went to the game, first game I have been to all year, too fucking boring, what happened to kicking to a contest?

Hey Mate, if you were even selected to play at that level, you aint no hack ! :)

I checked out your website, assuming thats your name, I couldnt
see anything obvious at the Collingwood website with your name
attached... ?? They dont have very good records of previous playing
lists.. I was wracking my brain for shithouse kicks at Collingwood,
and none of the obvious ones I can remember were you.
(Maybe you were not as bad as you reckon ! lol)

Yeah the game is definately evolving. I like some of the new
variations, hate others.

I like the kicking in straight away from a point, thats cool...

Hate Flooding. How many times per game would you see a
bloke literally stopping on the wing with nobody to kick to,
because his team mates havent got back into their forward
posistions yet, due to flooding...

That sucks.

And your point, kicking to a contest, that seems to depend
on the game. When the forwards are on fire, you still see
a lot of kicks to the tip of the goal square...

But yeah, if the team is not on fire they definately seek
out the uncontested lead... (or an unmarked player)

I fucking hate the "keepings off" at the end of each game
too.. (When the players know there is only 2 minutes to go)
Especially if there is less than a kick difference between the
two sides.. That fucking pisses me right off..

I listened to your song and also read your influences.
I would add U2 to that list. Theres some definate U2
influenced guitar in that tune.. Great production ! Did
you record it ?? If yes, what DAW are you using ??

Cheers,

-Mark

I had the EVH Phaser ... HAD ... used an adapter that had to many watts and fried the insides ...

Started smokin' and smelt up the joint like sauder ...

The only thing about that pedal that was good was the lower background noise and the cool blue LED light ...

There may be both flanger and phase on that breakdown ... gives me a reason to break out the remasters ...

I want the phaser....I like the added headroom. Not so sure about the Flanger, tried it at NAMM--- wasn't anymore impressed with it than the regular grey reissue one. And there's a mod of the grey one in the Line 6 MM4, so don't think I'll be buying the Flanger any time soon...

Damn is the blue light on the EVH Phase 90 bright! The power went out when we were practicing and I used it as a flashligh! LOL. Just plug a patch cord into the input and turn her on and you can use it as an emergency flashlight. I don't know if Eddie had that in mind but it's a great second feature.

...I can get the model of the old MXR Flanger in my Line6 MM-4 to sound close enough to "Unchained"...
Still would like to try the wah, though I wasn't so into the sound of it at the LA Staples Center show...
I still love my Vox wah...:D
I just like trying out ones with different voicings...

Going back a bit to conversation about the breakdown after the solo... It sounds like a phaser to me. The sweep and depth are different from when Ed is digging in on the open low D during the chorus.

Me too, but the "script" setting on the EVH one sounds closer, IMO...

that, and the power connector jack on it (the old one) was/is shorting out - was a choice of it being the only thing on my board run via
a battery - still works fine on batts- or repair/replace it (& I'm not into micro-soldering, so to repair it would have been almost as much as the new one)....

and with some experience using 'em now...I think the way to get the actual "closest" sound with either MXR EVH pedal...is to run it thru the effect loop...out front seems to color the overall sound too much...kinda overpowering...which is what I thought of ED's tone on the 2007-08 tour...too much effects in the mix....
