Pretty sure I've seen that in Arizona, but I never tried it. Makes sense that they would sell it in the land of the Saguaro cactus.

Even though I now find Taco Bell utterly disgusting, back when I was a kid and the chain wasn't such a monster they had these taco "burgers" (similar to a sloppy joe) called "Bellbeefers." Anyone else remember those?

Back prior to it becoming such a massive, corporate conglomerate, they used to look like this and actually had semi-decent fast "Mexican" food.

Man, they were such a treat after little league football practice.

Some other things that I know many of you can relate to as well.

Remember when "Slurpees" at 7-11 only came in say two flavors, they had to be ordered at the counter and the clerk had to fetch them for you?

How about when soda pop was in glass fucking bottles? Man, it beyond tasted better than plastic. Hence and probably a big reason why I don't drink soda anymore. lol. Keeping in stride with that, remember when you'd drink the bottles and return them to the store for $$$?

Fuck, this is a cool thread.

Shit, I'm wracking my fucking brain trying to remember stuff? Unfortunately, most of the stuff that's gone was locally.

Anyway, I remember when "Pizza Hut" was a sit down restaurant, you went with your fam and delivery wasn't even a thought.

I also remember when fast-food chicken sands were a new thing. I remember when you oredered one at Wendy's it came with all of the toppings that went on a hamburger. Anyone else remember that?

Another one I remember from childhood were these BBQ sands from ARBY's called "ARBYQ's" that my parents would bring home a sack full of and we'd gobble them down.

I also remember when chicken "nuggets" were the "new" thing and all of the fast food places had them. The one's from Kentucky Fried Chicken were the best, if memory serves me correctly? Speaking of that, fuck, remember when that place was called that and not "KFC?" It was also more of a "family oriented" faster food establishment as opposed what I see today. Much like the others I've mentioned prior.

Remember when they were like this?

I also remember the collectable plastic cups, some super heros, baseball players and the like...

And I agree 100% on the glass bottles......Remember when RC Cola had the bottle caps that you could peel back the plastic underneath to reveal a winning prize?Sometimes it was a free soda or 25 cents,Just enough to keep you coming back for more..lol

Yeah, that one pisses me off. I loved the Taco Doritos. It wasn't the Nacho Cheese that replaced them, though that did become the "standard" flavor. They finally dropped the "taco" flavor when they introduced the "Salsa Picante" and "Salsa Verde" flavors in the late 90's.

Gotta admit that the new Habanero flavor rocks though.

Pop rocks seem to make a comeback every 10 years or so. What probably happens is that each generation of kids starts eating them, then the urban legends resurface about exploding stomachs and all that, the parents panic, and the sales slump again.

Incidentally, Pop Rocks were invented by accident. What the company was actually trying to make was a mix for instant soda pop, which is why there's carbon dioxide within the candy itself. That plan failed, so in stead they marketed the stuff as candy. And the rest is legendary.

KFC was advertising some small chicken sandwiches a month or two ago. I don't know if it was a seasonal promotion or a permanent menu item, since I don't get to KFC very often.

As for the Peach soda, I don't think you can get any decent fruit flavored soda anymore, because of the high fructose corn syrup. When I was a kid, my mom bought all the Shasta fruit flavored pop. But the minute they went to the HFCS, that shit was undrinkable. Coke & Pepsi just manage to hide it better somehow.

the KFC Snackers are pretty good. the Chicken Littles were just square chicken patties on a square bun, with some mayo on it.

I dated this Mormon chick for a little while and she was very serious about living by the rules (which is the main reason we weren't together that long)

She used to drink Barq's root beer frequently. At first I figured she knew what she was doing, but one day, just after we had discussed the LDS church doctrine on caffeine, she was once again drinking the Barq's.

I said "You DO know that has caffeine in it, don't you?"

The shocked look on her face couldn't have been any worse if I had told her Donnie Osmond was a serial killer. She really thought she had committed some grievous sin against Heavenly Father. :D

On the other hand when I stopped for lunch in SLC on my 2002 road trip, I was surprised to find bottled water with caffeine in it!! Of course, I bought it. Perfect for a long day of driving through a barren wasteland. But I had to give the cashier at the store a little shit about it.

"The church actually allows you guys to sell this stuff??"

He just laughed. Probably afraid to say anything one way or another on the subject.

Oddly enough, I've never seen that caffeine water anywhere else BUT Salt Lake City. Oh the Ironicy.......

FORD,

I always wondered how you knew so much about the church. lol

The one thing (well among the many) that still floors me regarding the "words of wisdom" is how it's intentions are to be "healthy" and so on. Yet, so many Mormons are so obese it's sickening. They say "No alcohol" and on and on while they stuff their collective faces with endless cakes, cookies and jello salads. They do the same thing with their children as well.

Also "caffinated" water? Is it Mountain Meadow Springs Water? :o :p

If you go to Abdullah's (The Butcher) house of ribs and chinese food for the wednesday lunch buffet, there'll be a pan of 'em swimming in BBQ sauce. Oh, I know and have had "experiences" with Mormon chicks all too well. ;) In highschool they happened to be some of the biggest horndogs ever. Their way of thinking is that they could party, fuck, etc prior to getting married in the temple and they'd be forgiven and have a one way ticket to the celestial kingdom.

I think there was one of those in Tyler, TX, close to where I live. It's now a shopping center called the Red Barn Square. I never realised that was a restaurant chain.

I could've sworn the one time I took a sip of "Surge" that it was just "Mellow Yellow" with a different name?

A few other places I loved and thought of that have disappeared over the years...

Winchell's Donuts

Round Table Pizza

Shakeys Pizza

Roy Rogers Hamburgers

Godfathers Pizza

Sister's Fried Chicken (Wendy's spinoff of Kentucky Fried Chicken) They had these killer deep fried catfish sandwiches

We still have a couple Winchells locally (probably because there are no Dunkin Donuts or Krispy Kreme around, so they only have to compete with grocery stores and a couple local bakeries)

Shakey's has been long gone from here since the 80's,but there's still a pizza place in one of the locations. Some of the Shakey's architecture is still present. You would easily recognize the place as an ex-Shakey's - but the pizza there now is better.

Godfather's just disappeared from this area without warning. Same with Blimpies Sandwiches and The Sub Shop. Aside from one local competitor, Subway pretty much owns this town as far as the sandwich business goes.

A&W drive ins were huge around here in the 60's and 70's but they're also long gone. I think they may have a few on the Oregon Coast. Dairy Queen is unfortunately heading down the same path to extinction.

I LOVED Godfather's and outside of a cupla local places (which are also now extinct) it was my favorite growing up.

Blimpie's thrives here and there are several locations.

Ok, A&W exists here and has several locations. Unfortunately it's a part of Pepesico's "Combo" restaurants. They suck. We have all sorts of "KFC" combo joints. There are KFC/A&W's, KFC/Taco Smell and KFC/Pizza Hit "Express" things everywhere.

I'll agree with Dairy Queen cos they're a rarity. I know of a couple locally but they're in Bumfuck Egypt parts of town. There was one close by our house growin' up and I loved it. Many of these things/places are definitely regional though. For instance, I know DG has a Dairy Queen near her, back east cos we've talked about it comparring our fondness for ice cream treats.

not here. we just got a "protoype" DQ/Orange Julius store. i guess there's only two other ones like it in the country.

i remember A&W's in Toledo, but there werent any when we moved back to Cleveland. i think there may have been one in Akron.

there was a Red Barn in my hometown, but it's gone now. there is still one a town over, they blew out the side of the building and it's now a music store.

as for candy, remember these?

Twona,

I was going to say, for NOT having any Dairy Queen's here, they must be thriving somewhere cos they sure do a lot of national advertizing when I watch tv. I'm always seein' these treats that both look and sound "scrumdillyishus." lol. However, I seriously think there are like three locations here?

Other's I thought of include "Big Boy" restaurants (Here it was called JB's Big Boy and another I remember as a child called "Sambos." I think the latter was a "Denny's" type of place? I don't remember ever eating there, I just remember there were a lot of them.

Sambo's used to be pretty much universal. But once word got around that the chain used to be called "Little Black Sambos", they got tagged as racists, and the chain soon went out of business. Many of the former locations still operate under other names. The one here still has shitty food and horrible coffee like they always have.

There's several Winchell's in and around Denver, but we live in a bagel world now... and they're not doing the business they used to. It's a hangout for the 60+ crowd.

Shakey's... used to have 1 or 2 near here about 20 years ago... but no longer. Shit you not, but there's several in the Phillipines of all places. No, I'm not pulling your leg.

Godfathers... the last one I saw was in the northwest... Wasilla Alaska had one in the mid-90's... long after they disappeared here. But it's gone now. Fucking Godfather's... they knew how to make a decent pie.

I figured it must've had to do with the racial overtones. Regardless, I never remember eating at one? I just remember having them all over.

Hey, do you have "Taco Time's" up there? I know they're regional to Utah, Wyoming, Oregon and Washington. Spendy for "fast food" but a million times better than Taco Smell, which is a place I REFUSE to eat. :uck:

I hear you cos I'm such a health conscious freak. With the exception of a cupla local taverns here that make absolutely EPIC burgers, I don't touch hamburgers unless I make them myself. I'll have to make an exception though if an In 'N Out establishment ever makes it here. Dayuuum thos greaseball burgers were good. :)

our last few Big Boy joints closed up a few years ago. i guess way back when they were Manner's Big Boy, then toward the end they were Bob's Big Boy. they had the Big Boy comics...my grandmother always used to save them for me.

Yeah, I loved Godfathers Taco Pizza. I used to get pissed off if I went there for the pizza buffet lunch and they never put any Taco Pizza out. I don't know why that chain went tits up. Never heard a word about it.

And yes we do have Taco Time up here. There's 2 in the local area, but neither one is all that close to me, so I don't get there very often. But then Taco Hell isn't that close either. Thank God there's a Taco Del Mar down the street. Kickass burritos there.

I mentioned it prior when I made referrence to "Pizza Hut" actually being a fucking PIZZA HUT back in the day. It's just the times and it's too bad younger generations only know of Pizza from borrowing the credit card and making a phone call. Delivery has put a TON of stellar joints out of business. Again, when I was a kid "Pizza" was a HUGE deal and event, if you will? Tons of choices but you had to go out an PICK IT UP or EAT IN THE ESTABLISHMENT.

The one thing I'll do nowadays is pay the almost fifty bucks or so to have a decent pizza for the family by ordering from locally runned establishments. Sure, it's spendier but have you actually tasted say Domino's or Pizza Hut over the last few years? It's disgusting. I'm serious but even buying and cooking a frozen pizza is better tasting. Not to mention, those shitty and generic (What McDonald's is to hamburgers) "versions" of "pizzas" also cost an arm and a fucking leg!!! What also frightens me is the fact that the commercials always dance around the cheese topic. Now and considering that cheese is the main ingredient on a fucking pizza, I'm a bit weary when I highly doubt that the delivery places even fucking put ANY on the pies? I'm sorry but I refuse to spend thirty bucks for my tribe to eat thickened Elmer's Glue.

i never liked Domino's or Papa John's. we also have Marco's and Zeppe's (local chain), and they're no good, either.

the Pizza Hut by us isn't too bad.

a couple of the local joints combat the delivery guys by doing two- or three-fers, like Little Ceasar's used to do back in the day.

our favorite place has half and full sheet pizzas available with no notice required...if you happen to end up with a house full of people on a Saturday night they're the place to call.

Dairy Queen is still a huge franchise in Canada. They've really expanded the food side of the menu the last 10 years or so. They've got this thing called a FlameThrower burger now- Pepperjack cheese, smoked bacon, and a hot chipolte sauce. Then they came out with a Chili Cheese Burger. 1/2 pound of beef with cheese, chili and bacon...Makes my heart hurt just thinking about them!

A&W is also experiencing a rebirth in my homeland. The drive-ins are a thing of the past, but just about every mall has an A&W and eat-in restaurants are popping up everywhere.

Another chain that I remember first being in the U.S., because we'd see them when our family went to Vermont, N.H. and Maine, was Dixie Lee Fried Chicken. Those seem to have disappeared in the States, but they are big in small towns in Canada. The strategy seems to be that they open one in any small town that doesn't have a Kentucky Fried Chicken.
