I am so sick of Van Halen, Megadeth, Queensryche, Pantera, etc.... I have been literally playing the shit out of these bands. I'd like to find some new bands to discover. Would anyone recommend me some good shit? I love DLR and VH, and I really hate screaming vocals. A good singer is a must (Megadeth being an exception). I also would like fast guitars. Cheesiness fucking turns me off too. I would also like lyrics to be somewhat intricate and/or unexpected.

I'd love to hear what you guys love so I can refresh my music collection!

Savatage, ca. 1983 to 1993.

"Sirens" (1983)
"The Dungeons Are Calling" (1984)
"Hall of the Mountain King" (1987)
"Gutter Ballet" (1989)
"Edge of Thorns" (1993)

There's a little cheese throughout those, but Criss Oliva (guitar) was the perfect blend of Edward Van Halen and Randy Rhoads...he was a complete genius...Jon Oliva is a bit of a screamer, but he won't be heard at all on "Edge of Thorns" (Zak Stevens took over vocals then)...

Try downloading these songs first...these will give you an idea...

"Sirens"
"On the Run"
"The Dungeons Are Calling"
"The Whip"
"City Beneath the Surface"
"Hall of the Mountain King"
"Strange Wings"
"Gutter Ballet"
"When the Crowds Are Gone"
"She's in Love"
"Edge of Thorns"
"All That I Bleed"
"Sleep"

Then get back to me.

Ok I'll try em... when I say "scream" I mean anything Cannibal corpse or emo-screamo.

If you like Megadeth, get:

Diamond Head "The White Album"

The best of the NWOBHM.

Dave Mustaine rates that album as one of the most influential on him and Metallica.

It`s the most under-rated album of all time.

Cool beans!

Jon (the vocalist) was asked to join Sabbath in the mid 80s...Criss (his brother, guitar) came about a breath away from joining Megadeth...

They toured with Megadeth in '87...Jon got so pissed at Mustaine he body slammed him...

Pointless Savatage trivia... :)

I know how you feel. Same for me, but rather than trying to find more 80's styles metal, I've been listening to a lot of obscure Bob Seger, Thin Lizzy, & Skynard. Just a different approach, but still some great music that I overlooked in the 80's. A newer band that I like is 3 Doors Down. Try these songs if you haven't heard them yet - Life Of My Own, So I Need You, Better Life, Loser.

I'm glad you got the Death Angel. Do you like it? Act III is the only album that I really listened to, so I can't suggest the others.

Recently added to my collection:
Foo Fighters - any
Tool - Aenima, Lateralus
Exodus - Bonded by Blood
Flotsam & Jetsam - Doomsday For The Deceiver
Suicidal Tendencies - Posessed to Skate, Join The Army

Hope these help.

So no death metal vocals or whineyness, and fast guitars...try Children of Bodom on for size. They're a fast, loud, and heavy as fuck outfit from Finland. Suggested tracks would be "We're Not Gonna Fall", "Are You Dead Yet?", and "In Your Face". The vocals are kinda war-yellish, you can decipher them. Also try Shadows Fall, a good metal band that actually SINGS!

Okay..well I thought you wanted more recent music so I didn't give a lot of older stuff...but if you want Death Angel, Frolic Through The Park is fantastic! They do a kick ass version of KISS' "Cold Gin", I believe....

As far as Venom, Go with Black Metal, At War With Satan and the new one, Metal Black

Check out the self titled album by Nasty Savage

As far as just heavy but not over the top bands, there's a band called The Almighty that had a couple of good albums.

For just fantastic hard rock- try finding the debut album from a band called Kings of the Sun...JUST PHENOMINAL!!!!

That new Disturbed album "10,000 Fists" kicks serious ass! I didn't like Disturbed before I bought this album, and still don't like any of their prior stuff, but this album is good almost from start to finish, with a couple of skippable tracks in between. They also do a killer cover of Genesis's "Land Of Confusion".

merrykissmass2u, check out the "New Bands Thread" for up to date new music.

Sorry if anyone has put these bands down before, you said you were into heavy shit, here's some that spring to mind.

Tool

Crowbar

Exhorder (massive influence on Pantera, check out "The Law" and "Slaughter in the Vatican"

Testament

Exodus

Machine Head ("Burn My Eyes" is one of the best debut metal albums ever)

Sepultua (Chaos AD and Roots in particular)

Anthrax

Iced Earth (Ultra heavy power metal)

Meshuggah (technically minded jazz metal - you will have heard nothing like this, nothing is more brutal. Although beware of cookie monster vocals)

Hatebreed (hardcore punk meets metal)

The Haunted (classic thrash for the 21 st Century)

Strapping Young Lad (very fast and mental, Hetfield esque vocals, try the album "City" in particualr)

Mastodon (in my opinion, the most exciting metal band in years, if you can get past the cookie monster vocals)

Black Label Society (heavy metal, beer drinking music)

System of a Down

I will post any more if I think of any.....

Alright, you're forgiven.

Now, if you need recommendations on Helloween, pick anything EXCEPT these three:

Pink Bubbles Go Ape
Chameleon
High Live

While they ARE doubtlessly grate material, they're not recommendable for first time Helloween listeners.

The first two are very experimental and aren't really Helloween. Although they are very good, I'd only recommend them if you're really into the band and don't mind a little deviation.

As for High Live, Andi Deris wasn't yet a good substitute for Michael Kiske on stage. He couldn't sing the old material properly, and as a result slaughtered a bunch of classics. Like the first two, only recommendable if you're into the band.

I hear Deris improved live to an amazing extent later on, though... even being able to sing Keeper of the Seven Keys. Wish they'd come to Portugal.

Cheers! :bottle:

I hear Deris improved live to an amazing extent later on, though... even being able to sing Keeper of the Seven Keys. Wish they'd come to Portugal.

Cheers! :bottle:

Is Michael Kiske that mofo from Avantasia? Great voice !

The very same, my friend... the best voice out there. No one can even come close to this guy. Technique, soul, strength... the whole fuckin' package.

Andi Deris ain't too shabby either... especially nowadays.

If you liked Avantasia pick up both Keeper of the Seven Keys first. They're considered by many, and I do mean MANY, to be the best Metal albums ever created. Then work your way up from there.

Cheers! :bottle:

I liked Avantasia, but I hated the concepts... is this album very weird like Seven Keys? Do they have any kick ass non concept albums? Btw, it seems to me that they have 3 parts to the seven keys.

Oh yeah, they just released the third... Actually, some fans count Gamma Ray's Time to Break Free and Helloween's The Time of the Oath as Keepers III & IV, respectively. So this should be Keepers V.

But enough trivia.

They're not concept albums. The only "concept" in these masterpieces is the kickass music. And the only "weirdness" is the sillyness of some lyrics throughout the first two Keepers... you have to understand they ARE german, and therefore English is hardly their main language... the writing has improved grately afterwards, though.

Serioulsy, give 'em a listen. Anything but those three. One has to have problems in the head - i.e. being a manic depressive suicidal maniac - not to enjoy the upbeat and lightheartedness throughout every Helloween album that easily sets them apart from every other Metal band in the planet.

Well, every other band but Gamma Ray, but that would be pretty obvious...

Cheers! :bottle:

Best new band I've heard this decade.....

Electric Eel Shock.

Yes they're a Japanese band. No they don't sound a damn thing like Loudness.

Thank Buddha for that!

Imagine the gene spliced clone of Jimi Hendrix and Tony Iommi (born to a Japanese mother) on guitar.

Dee Dee Ramone's Asian twin on bass.

And a drummer so crazy he'll dress up like the old school Chili Peppers on stage (i.e one sock, not on his feet) - at an OUTDOOR gig in October. (and believe me it was fucking cold that day. Some of the black & white footage in this video looks very familiar, in fact)

English is not their native language, so don't expect profound lyrics, but other than that, they simply FUCKING ROCK!!

I agree, Dragonforce is just too "show-offy" for me. The guitar players Herman Li and Sam Totman spend way too much time doing usually useless guitar tricks, while singing about some geeky theme

Hanoi Rocks.

They'll grow on you. A lot of people like "Two Steps From The Move"; it's their most metallic sounding album from the '80s, but it's far from their best. Self Destruction Blues, Oriental Beat, Back To Mystery City, and their debut album are all amazing albums.

Not really fast guitars or anything, but just awesome music. A bit of a punk edge. Odd vocals and lyrics. Just brilliant, though.

Awesome band, totally unique, although some people find them hard to get into becuase the production is quiet odd.

Check out the record the released this year, it's pretty fuckin cool.

With Hanoi, you have to listne to the lyrics to get the full effect, Monroe wrote some fucked up shit!

Death Angel are excellent.
Ever heard Nevermore? Pick up "Dead Heart in a Dead World." Speed metal with excellent musicians and a singer who does not growl!
Kyuss' "Blues for the Red Sun" is good, too. Very different than Queens of the Stone Age. Stoner rock with an old Sabbath tone. Speaking of stoner rock, "America's Volume Dealer" by COC is awesome.
Helloween's "The Dark Ride" isn't cheesy like some of their other stuff.

Have you tried The Mars Volta?

They are like punk meets prog - I know that sounds awful, but they are an awesome band, like nothing you will have ever heard, the songs brim with life.

Few more suggestions (some are older than others):

1. Nuclear Assault (read about them in the Encyclopedia of heavy metal. Started by the original (not Frankie)bassist in Anthrax)

2. King Diamond (Good metal. King's got one hell of an octave range. Also try his other band, Mercyful Fate)

3. Eric Johnson (Instrumental guitarist. Check out his Ah Via Musicom album)

4. Lynch Mob (Mr. Scary's band post-Dokken. Try the Wicked Sensation album)

AC/DC? Dude, you need to listen to them a bit more.

These guys have actually been credited with influencing the start of the thrash movement-and rightfully so. They are quite heavy, unlike AC/DC. Udo Dirkschneider sounds nothing like Bon Scott or Brian Johnson. He has a sound all his own. Nobody has come close to duplicating it.

"With their brutal, simple riffs and aggressive, fast tempos, Accept was one of the top metal bands of the early '80s, and a major influence on the development of thrash. Led by the unique vocal stylings of screeching banshee Udo Dirkschneider, the band forged an instantly recognizable sound and was notorious as one of the decade's fiercest live acts. Despite recording two of the best heavy metal albums of the decade in Restless and Wild and Balls to the Wall, Accept remained too heavy and extreme for American audiences to embrace — even when they tried to tone down their act with more melodic songs."-allmusic.com

I've only listened to Balls to the Wall so far... and it sounds like it could be another ACDC record. I'm not fucking insane if I think that the vocals sound very similar to Johnson/Scott. I will have to check out more Accept to make a better judgement.

Don't forget the I'm The Man EP (You'll get a good laugh out of it) and Attack Of The Killer B's (If you want to hear Anthrax and Public Enemy mix it up). Also, hit up the new Iron Maiden single "The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg"

For a weider sort of thrash check out Voivod,

Nothingface or RRRRRoaarrr would be good places to start.

I can't really describe their sound, you will either love em or hate em. Sort of inventive thrash, I only thought of them cause you dig Faith No More, and whilst Voivod don't sound much like them, they are equally quirky....

I don't like FNM that much... sometimes they're too weird!

I always thought that about "Angel Dust", never could get into that record, but a lot of people swear by it....

Speaking of FNM, here's one of the best ever Sabbath covers, at least the studio version.

I do like that record as well. Angel Dust is just them being shitty for the sake of being creative.

Ever tried Edguy?
they are something like classic Helloween but a little better. I even compare them to Iron

If like to try your spanish skills
try Tierra Santa or WarCry they both are very good

anyone like the band Helmet?

Crunchy riffology at it's best.

Try:

Meantime

Betty

Strpa it on.

That's very weird you mentioned that. I was in a friend's car the other day, and I asked him what cd was in, and he said Helmet.

Strange!

I thought Edguy was cool. I don't really want any foreign language stuff, unless it's Russian.

I love prog, and prog metal. I am getting in to Dream Theater, Mekong Delta, and others more. Can you guys recommend any prog metal for me?

Searing beams of light and thunder
Over blackened plains
She will find her way:D

Kick ass song. I heard Tate comment on their Queen for the video; she was around seven feet tall.

Tiki-Tom
08-05-2006, 04:21 AM
wow, seven feet tall.
Now that's a lotta woman!

That song is what got me into them.
A very powerful song.

Seven feet tall is a lot of anyone!

I got into them after I listened to the Operation:Mindcrime record.
