I say megadeth. better riffs, better vocals... insane solos. Also, TSHF kills St Anger.

Rust in Peace vs MoP.... lol no contest there.

I like them both.... but i could destroy all my metallica cds and not even care.

this is war! make your vote with choice.

Consider:

Mustaine vs Hetfield
A Tout Le Monde vs Fade to Black etc....

I love both of these bands, and have done for about 15 years.

Megadeth easily wins musicianship - no doubt they have always technically been better than Metallica.

However, my vote goes to Metallica.

Firstly, whilst Megadeth are a solid live band, Metallica are in a different league.

Secondly, Metallica have done more to promote heavy metal worldwide.

It's difficult regarding quality of material, because both have written such classics. But for me MOP and Ride the Lightning will always stand up against anybody elses metal albums.

Mustaine and Hetfield are both the best rhythm players metal has ever produced, there are enough riffs there to keep everyones necks sore!

But for me the clincher is this - if Ulrich and Hetfield asked Mustaine to join Metallica tommorrow, he would do it without thinking: he knows who the beeter band is.

Some kind of Monster showed that he's spent 20 years been bitter about not being part of it.

Now I ain't criticsing Megadeth - I love that band, and they have helped get me through some tough time and given me some great memories. Can't wait for the new record.

But for me it will always be Birth School Metallica Death.

Megadeth. Listen to Good Mourning Black Friday & My Last Words, then find anything from Metallica that compares. Their best songs are from Ride The Lightning, and that's just because Mustaine wrote the most memorable riffs in those songs. Hetfield is a better lyricist, but you have to have the music to make it work.

The main reason he wouldn't do this is he couldn't fire them after 1 or 2 albums....like every other drummer or guitarist he's had.

I just don't see it. Now if Ellefson and Mustaine joined Hetfield & Ulrich, we might have something. I'd love to hear a full length studio album with those 4. But to be honest, I've never liked Ulrich, Newsted, and only somewhat like Kirk. And Megadeth was always the 2 Dave's. (until now).

But Megadeth has always been my 2nd favorite band. Favorite overall in heavy metal.

I agree with Peace Sells at #1. Black Friday & My Last Words are my 2 favorite songs from them. I might put So Far, So Good, So What at 2nd. I really like that album.

When comparing to Metallica, I always told my buddies to use best album vs best album. Master of Puppets vs Peace Sells. Rather than 3rd album vs 3rd album etc...

Garth Brooks did loads to promote cuntry to an even bigger audience worldwide. I don't like Garth Brooks.
Fat Boy Slim did the same for 'Dance music' He's a sack of crap, AND he was in the house martins. 'shudder'

Shell have promoted the use of petroleum,
Hagar the use of shit hair, tequila, fatness
Eddie the eagle, the non-use of the human brain...

Megadeth 'coz the parties are better, the fans are better but most importantly when talking about bands..

THE MUSIC IS BETTER

Well, I've seen Megadeth 4 times, and Metallica 3.

Now Megadeth is a great live band, truly brilliant.

But Metallica, whilst there out put these days is questionable, are a better live band.

Maybe is Mustaine had kept a solid line up, who knows....

On a separate note, has anybody heard anything about the new Megadeth record?

I know they have been recording it in England, but the news on their website doesn't really give any indication of where its going or what it's gonna sound like.

I've got high expectations now that Mustaine has decided to keep the band going and not begin a solo career.

TSHF certainly had some strong moments - but overall I'd like to here less soloing and more riffage, IMO there was too much widdling on that record.

But it was killer nonetheless - Kick the Chair is just out of this world....

Megadeth... hands down. Don't get me wrong, I like Metallica, but not as much as Megadeth. Just like someone else said, Megadeth is my 2nd favorite band period, and my favorite Heavy Metal band. Rust in Peace is top to bottom amazing. So is Master, but look at the two bands now... St. Anger versus The System has Failed. TSHF easily kicks St. Anger's ass. Somone said there was too much soloing, I didn't think so, but atleast they had more than one unlike St. Anger.

The Some kind of Monster video is messed up. Dave said they only put the parts of him in it that made him look like a pussy and that he would rejoin Metallica at the drop of a hat. So, I agree that video doesn't make him look to cool, but if I was Lars, that's the way I'd want it.

As for what Metallica has done for Heavy Metal.... I'm sorry, but when my sister (country, pop, 80's hair ballad fan) asks to borrow the Black Album, it's not cool. In fact, I really dislike And Justice for All. Lars sounds like he's beating oil drums. They might have propelled Metal into the pop realm, but they are doing anything to revive it right now.

I could on, but I'm not really that interested in dissecting this once again. Just for my money's worth, I'd see Megadeth show before a Metallica show.

Back when I wasn't a metalhead, I remember making fun of metal with another non-metalhead. Anyway, he was making fun of metal bands' names.... He said "Bands are named dumbass names.... like MEGADETH!". I didn't even know megadeth was real! I NEVER saw myself digging their shit. Now I love metal! Dave Mustaine and David Lee Roth came to me in my sleep. If it was possible for david lee roth and mustaine to have a kid in a non-gay manner, I wish I was it.

Megadeth Heading Back To The Old School With United Abominations

07.17.2006 6:00 AM EDT

After a tough few years, 'I wanted to go back to the way the stuff was done in the beginning,' says frontman Dave Mustaine.

When Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine named his band's 2004 album The System Has Failed, he seemed to be commenting on the state of U.S. politics. But in retrospect, the title was dead-on for an entirely different reason: The system Mustaine depended on for his livelihood was falling apart.

There were problems with the band's lineup, an ugly lawsuit had developed with ex-bassist David Ellefson, and the label that released the album suffered a staff shakeup that resulted in what Mustaine called "a complete lack of support for the project." In February 2005, Mustaine announced plans to disband Megadeth and go solo. As the year progressed, however, he re-evaluated his decision, and on October 9 at a concert in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he declared that Megadeth would continue.

"My decision was a combination of a few things," Mustaine said as he prepared to enter the studio to record vocals for the band's upcoming album, United Abominations, which is scheduled for a Halloween release. "I was finally associating with guys that really love to play — [ex-Eidolon guitarist Glen Drover and drummer Shawn Drover] — and that make me feel really good to play. They respect me and are fans of the music that we play and of the music in our genre. Also, ticket sales were up and record sales were up — it was happening again."

Inspired by his decision, Mustaine wrote a batch of new songs, signed a new deal with Roadrunner Records and hired bassist James LoMenzo (ex-Black Label Society and, um, White Lion) to replace James Macdonough. Then the band flew to England to record drums for the album.

"We rented [Led Zeppelin drummer] John Bonham's drum kit and recorded at a studio in [Pink Floyd guitarist] David Gilmour's house, which was great." Mustaine said.

"The kit is the only one that's available in the world to rent," Drover added. "Dave surprised me with that, which was pretty incredible because I didn't even know it was possible to get Bonham's kit to rent for anybody. So I incorporated the bass drum and his floor tom and a snare on the kit that I use in the studio, and that was really inspiring. We played in the middle of nowhere and it was just a really cool vibe."

After the drums were finished, Megadeth returned to California to record the guitars and bass. Even before the vocals were added, it was clear that United Abominations was going to please fans of Megadeth's vintage material. "If I was to say what time this record would have came out, I would have said some time before [1990's] Rust in Peace or sometime after [1992's] Countdown to Extinction, Mustaine said. "The critics called The System a return to form (see "Dave Mustaine, Megadeth Return To Life With New System"), but this is even more so. The record company that I'm with now gets it and I'm with management who gets it. So I don't have to write songs because the wives of certain bandmembers are griping or their mortgage is not getting paid or management is telling me that I've got to get a record done to do the tour and I've got to do the tour because if not, I'm not going to be able to pay my bills."

Such skewed reasoning, insisted Mustaine, was largely responsible for Megadeth's transformation from a stellar thrash outfit to a more commercial entity. It all started after the landmark album Rust in Peace, when Megadeth recorded the slightly more commercial Countdown to Extinction, which reached #2 on the Billboard albums chart.

"After that, the pressure came from all sorts of different angles and I was learning as I was going along," Mustaine said. "Also, we had pretty much a revolving lineup within the band and with representation from management and with numerous administrations at the record companies. While we were signed to Capitol, there were six different presidents there. So, we've never really had any long-term equilibrium."

United Abominations will mark the 'Deth recording debut of the Drover brothers. The album will contain 11 songs, including the title track, "Washington's Next" and "Gears of War"; an additional track will be included with the Japanese release. "It's a really diverse record," Shawn said. "There's some faster stuff that should appeal to the band's thrash fans and it's got a little more mainstream stuff as well. It's definitely not one-dimensional."

The record is being co-produced by Mustaine and Jeff Balding, who has worked on three other Megadeth discs. But while Balding has an arsenal of contemporary gizmos at his disposal, the album is being created with the kinds of equipment and techniques the band used in the late '80s — before the advent of ProTools and digital editing.

"I wanted to go back to the way the stuff was done in the beginning," said Mustaine. "I think Megadeth boils down to its bare minimum. When you break it down, Megadeth is guitar, bass, drums and guitar solos. And when it starts going in directions where there's a little bit too much stuff going on that can't be done onstage, it loses heaviness because that stuff probably shouldn't be there anyway."

As he heads into the final weeks of production, Mustaine is happy with his new songs, ecstatic about his current bandmates and looking forward to announcing the lineup for the second Gigantour, the technical-metal festival he launched and headlined last year. Once again, the system is fully operational.

Also, the new vic rattlehead is AWESOME!

Megadeth's early albums up to 'Rust in Peace' were excellent....

both bands went downhill after they peaked, in my opinion....but Megadeth's albums after RiP were never as bad as Metallica's 90's albums....

in terms of vocalist and band members, I prefer Hetfield's voice to Mustaine's voice.....as sounding like a squirrel should be kept to a mininmum....

Marty Friedman is a MUCH better guitarist than Kirk Hammett....but Hammett was good on Metallica's early albums....Friedman is just much better technically and musically (and he doesn't overuse the wah wah pedal).....

Metallica once had a better bassist (I think), Cliff Burton....they might still do, I don't know much about Robert Trujillo.....I don't know who Megadeth's bassist is....

and I'm sure Megadeth's drummer is better than Lars Ulrich....

I think Megadeth wins on the basis that their albums in the 90's were much better than Metallica's albums in the 90's....but Metallica has a better vocalist.....

about vocalists: they both pretty much suck. If mustaine would have hired a vocalist, Megadeth would have been metallica in terms of popularity. Keep in mind, a lot of their fans are people who think they're hardcore by listening to metallica... it's a fad to like them. megadeth never gets mentioned in that bullshit, so they also have a quality fan base.

I'm actually glad he got the boot from Metallica. Look at all the great music we got. Who knows what they would have sounded like together over the years. Metallica had more commercial success, but Megadeth stayed true to their roots and never sold out.

How could Megadeth follow Metallica, or Metallica set the trend, when Mustaine was an originator of Metallica? He started the movement as much as Hetfield, Burton & Ulrich. Master of Puppets is one of my all-time favorite albums. Excellent from start to finish, every note. But Megadeth to me has been more consistent in putting out kick ass albums throughout their career, rather than 1 great album.

Ok, this got hushed up, so most off what I heard was rumour and specualtion, but here goes.

Mustaine owned 80% of the Megadeth name and Ellefson 20%, an agreement that went back years and years.

Some sort of argument occured over money - Ellefson claimed that he had been ripped off on later records, and once he left the band still wanted 20% of anything with the name on (fair enough it seems to me, if he owned half the name and was there to build the band up).

Ellefson launched a massive suit for millions of dollars - I have no idea what the verdict was, or if tis even finished yet.

Meanwhile Mustaine slammed him, said that Ellefson couldn't keep time, wasn't that integral to the band and even hinted that another bassist may have recorded some of the tracks on the records.

I don't seem them kissing and making up....

Kill Em' All & Ride The Lightning have Mustaine all over them. Weird that those are arguably Metallica's best 2 albums.

But I must re-state that I love both bands for different moods. Metallica is much fatter (Leper Messiah) while Megadeth is more intricate guitar work (Black Friday).

WAKE THE FUCK UP

A fucking MEN. Some of you guys are fuckin' idiots...Mustaine had credits on the 2 FIRST albums. He had NOTHING to do with it thereafter.

He only had 4 credits on Kill 'Em All out of 10 FUCKING tracks.

And on Ride The Lightning? 2 out of 8. And one of those is an instrumental piece mostly written by Cliff.

Too many of you are only looking at their post And Justice For All work, which nobody likes. Most of Megadeth's catalog isn't anything that special up against the likes of KEA and MOP.

Ok, Megadeth never had the fan base Metallica did, didn't spearhead the thrash movement, were always "second" to Metallica... yes, these are facts, I wasn't there but I know it. But no matter how much Metallica achieved, to me Megadeth will always be better. Dave knew what he was doing, even whaen he was completely fucked out of his brains. Metallica lost it after Cliff died. ...And Justice for all marked the beginning of the end, even as album sales were up.

Now for a bit of cuntroversy:

Metallica was Mustaine & Burton, bitches!

I pretty much don't like most thrash metal, but I'll have to go with Megadeth. Not for the songwriting, but for my opinions. Metallica is so overrated, being percieved as the "best band ever" by people in my age group. Also, Metallica recieves too much credit for being the best thrash ever. Remember, Metallica went down hill after 90 for most of you. For me, however, I've never liked them

MERRYKISSMASS2U
07-25-2006, 12:18 PM
I agree. Metallica is not the best band ever. It's cool for people to like them because all the numetal fans who like them make their friends think they're hardasses or something. 90% of those poseurs probably have not even heard of Dave Mustaine. Fuck you Matt White.... even on Megadeth's VH1BTM Ulrich talks of how flawless Rust in Peace was. Imagine how cool that would be though if one day Mustaine rejoined the band?!?!?!??! AWESOME! Mustaine singing Metallica? Hetfield roaring Hangar 18?!? That would be thrash heaven.

Mako_kimura, I respect your opinions greatly. Thrash is probably my favorite genre of metal. I'm not even saying that Megallica are the top two thrash acts. There are tons of kick ass thrashers (Annihilator, Testament, Over Kill, Slayer) and hundreds of insanely good albums (Rust in Peace, Ride the Lightning, Seasons in the Abyss, Oops I did it again, etc.....).

What I am trying to say in this thread is that Metallica is talented, and so is megadeth. However, overall, I think that Megadeth butchers Metallica. They are more overrated than fucking Nirvana.

I personally feel that Rust in Peace destroys any Metallica offering, and I think that Battery can't touch Hangar 18. If you don't feel that way, I'd love for you to express your opinions in an intelligent way and not fucking contradict yourself by saying that you respect others, yet you don't give Megadeth fans' opinions the light of day.

P.S. I'm still waiting for Matt to create some fucking aliases to vote for Metallica in this poll. I guess people would rather be a fucking protege of five magics than fight against napster.

Comparing Megadeth and Metallica is like comparing Led and The Who. Both are very different bands, One can truly not decide which one is better. I love Metallica '83-'91, They were the greatest Metal Band on the Planet during that time. Megadeth is good as well, Mustaine is very intelligent in his lryics, Mainly focusing on Social Issues, Very Much like The who in that respect. Metallica writes different, writing about War and the Death Penalty, Very good song writing on that side as well. Very good Musicianship in both bands, Both are defintly not as good, And they're will never be another band like them.

Wow it's 1987 again!

How do you decide if ome band is better than the other?

Surely it's subjective, right?

I mean if we go on success, Metallica win hands down:

95 million records to Megadeth's 20ish million

Far bigger tours etc etc...

And thats not the sort of succes that's come from huge media campaigns and airplay like some shitty boyband now is it? It came from relentless touring up to about 1995 and building up a huge fanbase.

But still, selling more records and concert tickets doesn't make them "better" does it? Just means more people dig em.

Metallica have probably been more influencial, but again how would you test it?

To me the debate of who is "better" is purely artificial and untestable.

I'll always prefer Metallica, I'll always think they were more important, but I can't prove that they are "better", only state my opinion.

To me, the fact that this 20 years old debate still arouses such pasion is a testament to how truly great both bands are.

That doesn't make Metallica better. Mariah Carey sold more records than Metallica did in the United States. By Matt White's logic, Mariah is better than Metallica who is better than Megadeth. I think album sales are irrelavent. I disagree on the riff thing though. Who fucking cares! I'm glad Dave got kicked out because we can enjoy two awesome bands.

Dude, the fight is over. No one is more upset about this shit than you are. Everyone else agrees that both bands are better, and a 15:11 ratio prefers Megadeth. It's really not a big deal. Just listen to Master of Puppets and I'll listen to Rust in Peace.

I do agree with you there.... "Rust In Peace"* - 781,000 album sales sucks. However, that is a pretty good number for being a thrash metal act in a genre where Metallica was getting all of the gold.

the mechanix done by metallica at royally breakneck speed and hetfield on vocals just proves that when kirk joined when dave was "fired" during the "kill 'em all" sessions and it morhed into the 4 horsemen that they were better having dave in the band.

i say listen to the best songs metallica ever put out were written or co-written by and with dave mustain.

I see someone (let's guess who) made all these fucking aliases to sway the post count at the top. Don't you realize that the dudes in Metallica may have cheated Mustaine out of a few songs here or there? I'm not saying that Metallica isn't capable of creating good tunes sans Mustaine, but I'm pretty sure that he had a hand in some uncredited works.

I have always thought that. It wouldn't be uncharacteristic of Metallica to do that to him. Thare are a few songs on MoP that I'm sure he had a hand in. If he didn't outright write them, his influence is definitely there.

It depends on what era you are talking about. If you're talking classic Metallica, KEA to AJFA, I much prefer that to Megadeth, anyday. But then, that is some of the best metal ever produced. If you're talking later years Metallica (a.k.a. alternica, selloutica, sucktallica), then it's Megadeth, hands down. I like what both bands have to offer, for the most part, other than Metallica's post Black output. My favorite era of Megadeth is the Countdown era. That's my favorite album of theirs, and I like the movie tracks they did during the same era that somehow didn't make it onto a record other than the Hidden Treasures cd, Angry Again and 99 Ways To Die. They were at their peak in the early 90's, then they went the way of Metallica and went to a softer sound, but still put out good, quality music, unlike Metallica. I bought Cryptic Writings when it came out, and really enjoyed alot of the stuff on that album. I will say this about Megadeth...they are the only ones of the two bands to successfully go back to their old sound after doing several softer albums in a row. Metallica tried, but failed miserably, to go back to making hard music with the turd St. Anger. I wish Metallica could go back to making music like on their first four albums, but I just don't see it happening.

They have lost the speed metal vibe they had back in the day. For whatever reason it's just not there anymore. Thats just something ya can't fake your way through. Some lose that feeling as they get older and some don't. It's just that simple.

Just be happy that they gave us a few killer albums back in the day.

Why can Mustaine not seem to be able to keep together a steady lineup these days? It's a different lineup every album it seems. Is he that difficult to work with? That said, I did like alot of "The World Needs A Hero", especially 1000 Times Goodbye, Dread And The Fugitive Mind, Motopsycho, Return To Hangar, and the second half of When, although it sounded like a knockoff of Metallica's cover of Am I Evil?, still cool. "The System Has Failed", I just got that and I've listened to it one time, and wasn't too overly impressed the first listen. They have their old sound back, but nothing really grabbed my attention the first listen. I prefer the lineup that had Marty Friedman, Dave Ellefson, and Nick Mensa...that was their best lineup, IMO. I have no idea if this new lineup is going to be worth a shit...don't know anything about any of those musicians.

He should have tried harder to work things out with Ellefson though, for me Megadeth is Ellefson and Mustaine.

I really couldn't care less who is playing drums and lead (although I'd love to see Menza and Friedman back, I ain't gonna lose sleep over it.)

I just get the impression that Mustaine is very hard to work with - and rightly so, he knows what he wants.

But I don't imagine that Megadeth has ever been anything like a democracy - I mean, of all those guitar players, not many have received song writing credits. Maybe if he let people in then they'd have better working relationships.

That's all conjecture tho.....

I know this has already been stated before on this thread, but I do find it absolutely enthralling that after so many decades these two bands can still be the subject of such passionate discordances.

And, like I said before, Metallica certainly was the biggest act back in the day, but they lost it after Cliff died. ...And Justice For All has only a few good tracks on it, and certainly doesn't stand up to any album from the trilogy that Cliff contributed to. The black album? Even weaker, and after that... Complete and utter shite.

Now, Megadeth DID have some weak albums, namely Cryptic Writings and Risk, but The System Has Failed, albeit being weaker than classics such as Peace Sells and Rust in Peace is still a good Metal album.

So, over the years, Megadeth wins by consistency. Metallica went too astray to even be taken serious nowadays.

And as for concerts? Well, I've seen both bands recently, and I have to tell you the Megadeth was booed by critics because, and ONLY BECAUSE of the virtuosism and intrumental masturbation going on on that stage. The critics conveniently looked the other way in every other aspects of the concert and massacred Dave & co. because of the excellent musicianship displayed on stage. Go figure.

Metallica? They were cheered, of course. Because a Metallica concert nowadays is a concert you can go too with your parents AND granparents. Maybe you can take the wife and kids too, 'cause they surely won't be playing only of their Thrash Metal classics, the older stuff being from the Black Album. Only family friendly "Metal" anthems. Pack your family up in your mini van and go have a picnic while watching James & co. doing their antics on stage. Hell, if you're lucky, maybe VAN HAGAR will be the opening act.

Disgusting...

Cheers! :bottle:

That's right. I forgot about that. I think he is back doing that type of stuff now. If you have the talent, you can apply it to all sorts of music.

Right now my favorite newer Megadeth songs are:
1,000 Times Goodbye
Prince Of Darkness (especially the beginning)
Die Dead Enough
Disconnect

I wasn't that impressed with Slayer's Christ Illusion. I doubt that you have Usenet access, but I posted it to alt.binaries.sounds.lossless and alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.heavy-metal.

However, I am one of the few people who actually likes St. Anger, purely and simply for the sheer aggression of the damn thing and the fact that emotionaly I find that it makes me very uncomfortable.

It's far from being a classic Metallica record, and it's defiantely not for everyone - almost an interesting experiment really,

But when you watch the film, you realsie why the damn thing sounds like a chaotic cluster-fuck!

Just the title "Wake up dead" makes me think a lot
If you wake up you are not dead.......and if you are dead you can't wake up.....so.....Mustaine would had been full of Heroin when writing that title
Very excellent riff all the song long and too little singing.....I simply like it!

Saw megadeth last night on the Gigantour with Arch enemy and soulfly. Megadeth were fantastic. They played peace sells and the guys from soulfly and arch enemy came out to do the last half of the song. Strangely they played the 4 horsemen. And, no it wasnt mecanix it was the 4 horsemen. We got a preview of the new album too they played a new one called 'Washington is next', it sounded great.

Metallica (good metallica) v Megadeth is a real toss up. Back in the day it was a close call, both had great songs. Its not even a contest now. Metallica are a standing musical joke; doing MTV icon shows where 'snoop dog' does sad but true (SNORE). It seems as though Dave has come out on top !
