My friend had an old HP Pavilion XL918 as a primary computer. He also had an HP notebook, but it broke. It has yet to be fixed. He was told that in order for the notebook to be fixed, he needed to buy a new motherboard. This could buy a brand new notebook! Anyway, he has been without a pc for some time. His primary pc has been other friends' machines.

Finally, he had had enough of that. He tried to turn on his old Pavilion (1 ghz :() on, and and it wouldnt boot. We thought it was the HDD, the Mobo, etc. We spent an hour talking to HP about the problem. They recommended sending it in. After awhile, we decided that a 1ghz piece of junk was not even worth salvaging. He decided he wanted a new PC. Immediately he went to dell.com to look for deals.

I decided to build him a budget machine!

Here are the specs.

Floppy: Leftover from HP
CD Drive/burner/dvd viewer : Leftover
Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811147036
Motherboard:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813127229
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820161615
CPU:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819104237

CRT: He's buying that in a brick and mortar place (no shipping).

Keyboard: Leftovers
Mouse: Leftovers
Speakers: He uses headphones
Harddrive: 40 GB IDE leftover

This system is for someone who's usage on the PC consists of playing internet games and downloading the occasional song off limewire. He also does some word processing. The system will probably dual boot Ubuntu Linux and Windows XP Professional.

Not bad for 220 bucks, huh? (not including crt)

It also has 64 bit capabilities. This is an awesome machine for this type of user.

Dell is fine, although average. I just proved that I can build a 300 dollar machine that FAR surpasses that Dell crap.

Looks like a pretty sweet system for the money. AMD is definitely the better processor, and for Christ's sake, avoid DELL at all costs!!

Michael Dell (CEO) is a close personal friend of George W. Chimp Jr. and a story just recently broke that DELL is installing keyloggers in all their new systems so they can track your every movement and report what they find to their friends at the BCE Reichland Security office.

Fuck that shit. No built in spyware on my PC, I don't care how cheap it is.

Also, Dell insists on using only INTEL processors, and most of their "deals" usually involve a forced AOL or MSN subscription, which nobody needs.

As an alternative to this system, I know where you can get a new complete system for under $300 (http://www.fifthedimension.net/Merchant5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=fifthedimension&Product_Code=BBasic&Category_Code=AMDCS) which includes MEPIS, the best Linux distribution available, in my humble opiniion.

I was actually considering that case... but he didn't like it that much. This system isn't as capable as the one I'm going to build anyway (the parts come thursday). This comp comes witha 2800+, 128mb ram (the POS before had this), and no modem. Also, this drive can read dvd drives.

About Spyware:

When I used to buy OEM computers, I wiped the HDD first thing anyway.
