My friend had an old HP Pavilion XL918 as a primary computer. He also had an HP notebook, but it broke. It has yet to be fixed. He was told that in order for the notebook to be fixed, he needed to buy a new motherboard. This could buy a brand new notebook! Anyway, he has been without a pc for some time. His primary pc has been other friends' machines.
Finally, he had had enough of that. He tried to turn on his old Pavilion (1 ghz :() on, and and it wouldnt boot. We thought it was the HDD, the Mobo, etc. We spent an hour talking to HP about the problem. They recommended sending it in. After awhile, we decided that a 1ghz piece of junk was not even worth salvaging. He decided he wanted a new PC. Immediately he went to dell.com to look for deals.
I decided to build him a budget machine!
Here are the specs.
Floppy: Leftover from HP
CD Drive/burner/dvd viewer : Leftover
Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811147036
Motherboard:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813127229
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820161615
CPU:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819104237
CRT: He's buying that in a brick and mortar place (no shipping).
Keyboard: Leftovers
Mouse: Leftovers
Speakers: He uses headphones
Harddrive: 40 GB IDE leftover
This system is for someone who's usage on the PC consists of playing internet games and downloading the occasional song off limewire. He also does some word processing. The system will probably dual boot Ubuntu Linux and Windows XP Professional.
Not bad for 220 bucks, huh? (not including crt)
